There's a Better Way? Who Cares!
I've recently been asked by my coach and several coaching clients the question: "What could someone have said to you when you were working 80+ hour weeks, and enjoying every minute of them, to convince you that there was a way to live a more balanced life?" To answer this question, I've had to take a stroll down memory lane. I don't hide my past. It's part of me, and I gladly share it with anyone who might relate to the path I traveled to become the family-always-comes-first, home-office solopreneur that I am today.

PDF Your Board Package
Thankfully I no longer get fedexed binders of board packages from my portfolio companies in advance of a board meeting. Through the modern miracle of email, the board packages show up in my inbox – hopefully a few days (rather than a few hours – or even minutes) before the board meeting. The board packages tend to show up in three different formats – one that is easy to deal with, one that is ok, and one that sucks.

Board Meeting Rules
Following are some board meeting rules that were recently presented to me and my fellow board members by a CEO at one of his first board meetings at a newly funded early stage company. I thought they were brilliant. Feel free to pass them out at your next board meeting.

A Strategic Look At Dos and Donts of Board Meeting Minutes From Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach
Do you serve on a board of directors and experience significant inaccuracies and inconsistencies in board minutes? Do you know that board minutes are really a very important resource to governing boards? Minutes of board meetings provide evidence that a board has exercised care in decision-making. The minutes also substantiate that a board is operating in accordance with its Bylaws and other documents and rules. Although there is recognition that board minutes are important, many organizations continue to have inadequate records of board meetings. Your strategic thinking business coach offers a list of the DO’s and DON’Ts of board meeting minutes.

Why Hosted Exchange Makes Sense for Small Businesses
A Microsoft Exchange solution is rapidly becoming a must-have for any business, allowing easy communication and collaboration. But smaller businesses hit a roadblock when they see the costs of having an in-house exchange server. If you own a small business that could benefit from increased efficiency and workforce productivity, Hosted Exchange may be the perfect solution.

Should You Force Your Investors To Use Your Product?
I had the following exchange with the CEO of one of my investments the other day. Q (Brad): It’s strange to me that only a few of the investors / board members are using Product X. Any insights?

Job Exchange Programs- A Different Spin On Employee Development
A job exchange program works much like a foreign student exchange program. An employee basically switches to another group, department, city, or any other division in the company. There, the employee is "hosted" by the receiving office and gains exposure to the culture, employees, and clients of that office. It can be a situation where two employees truly "exchange" positions for a set period of time.

Chicago "Street Food"
We road tripped to Chicago to forage for top notch Deep Dish Pizza, Italian beefs and Chicago hot dogs. We found some fabulous food and some very helpful new friends. Read on to find a couple of places to stay away from.

Is Your Law Firm Anything Like Your Sales Consulting Firm?
Did you ever stop to think about how much or how little you rely on your advisers? Not your board, not your board of advisers, but your business advisers. These are the individuals from outside of your company that you trust to direct, recommend, advise, consult and help with decisions, strategies, options and solutions to put your business in the best possible position to succeed. Take a look at the portfolio of advisers to the left.

Can sales and medicine mix?
As you know, I am an advocate for the philosophy that ‘everybody lives by selling something’ and that people buy from people they trust. At its best, selling is about the principle of exchange:- the exchange of value where both parties benefit from open and transparent communication and know what they are engaging in. So can ‘selling’ be seen as a legitimate role in the various practices of medicine? I.e. GP’s, dentists, optometrists, physiotherapists, surgeons, etc. If we take it that good selling is where people are fully informed of the facts surrounding their situation, are given legitimate options to choose from, and are in a position to make their own decisions without fear of deception, bullying or intimidation then, yes, selling can form a part of the practice of medicine.

Nonprofit Board Member Manuals - What Should You Include?
When you have a board of directors, it is always a good idea to have a Board Member Manual. A Manual is a great tool for board members to use when they need quick and easy access to critical information about the organization. It compiles important documents into one binder, so they don't waste time and energy looking for what they need in several files or locations. Does your organization have a manual for its board members?
