Today is the first day of school in Michigan and I am the new mom to a Middle Schooler!. Time has flown so quickly. His elementary school is nothing more than a fond memory and he is ready to move on. I am so proud of him today!

While I would be the first to agree that we have some unique challenges facing us, this generation of young people is very impressive. When I visit with them, I try to focus on the critical issues they are facing, including drugs, alcohol, destructive relationships, and negative peer pressure. These young people have been pounded with the message "Just Say No." That message was brought to the forefront by former First Lady Nancy Reagan.

In "Don't Bring It to Work" the underlying idea is that when stress hits the hot button we all revert to behavior patterns we learned as kids in our original organization, the family for protection and survival. That is what seems to be showing up around our country in this time of sadness and confusion. The knee-jerk reactions are so similar to ones that we can all remember when disagreements broke out in elementary and middle school playgrounds. We were given detentions, told to behave, but rarely sat down to really look at what started the upset in the first place.
