Ten Hallmarks of a High Trust Organization
We tend to think of trust in one dimension, but there are several different ways trust plays out in organizations. My favorite definition of trust is that when I trust someone, it means I believe he or she will always do what is thought to be in my best interest (even if I do not particularly appreciate it at the time). We can contrast some dimensions of trust by considering what it is like to work in an organization with high trust versus one with low trust on several dimensions

A Timely Time Management System for Creative People
The Buffet system is practical and flexible, yet simple. It not only keeps me focused on what I have to do, I easily manage multiple projects and goals and have the action steps to get me there. A secondary benefit is that it gives me is a sense of satisfaction that comes from feeling like I am in control of my time (excellent for keeping moping at bay). A third and for me, the most important advantage is that it keeps me productive while maintaining enough flexibility to be creative. A fourth benefit is that it helps keep me in balance, a dicey proposition at the best of times. Fifthly, I can easily pick out my priorities when I have them laid out in front of me.

Are you at the top of your Agenda?
Our days are just not long enough and when many of us are working upwards of sixty hours a week, good time management skills can make the difference between feeling successful or feeling like a failure, between feeling satisfaction or disappointment. Despite having access to a vast range of time management assistance some of us remain unable to use our time well.

Successful People Never Stop Learning

When you build on your strengths you can make incremental improvements. However, if you have a glaring gap in your skills, address it now. Don't wait to take necessary quantum leaps.

Five Techniques to Strengthen Your Mental Toughness
Have you ever wondered what it takes to become an Olympic Athlete, compete in the Ironman contest, or win a Grand Slam tennis match when you’re nearly at the brink of defeat? If you ask coaches and athletes, they will almost unanimously mention that mental toughness gave them the edge. Mental toughness is the ability to maintain focus and determination to stay on a course of action regardless of the difficulties.

Keeping the Glass Full
As you know, I have been out of contact for several months. Events happen in our lives over which we have no control and we do our best to respond. Such was the case for me, and as I re-establish my connection I want to share with you what I have learned.

Master Your Game: Establishing Your Tactical Game
After establishing your target, it is imperative that you establish a strategy. Here are four factors that have assisted me in executing my strategy: • Taking action • Being focused when in action • Learning from the action and adjusting for the next one • Being persistent.

Master Your Game: Introduction
Welcome to the first edition of Master Your Game, a monthly newsletter distributed by Catalyst Business Coaching. The objective of Master Your Game is to assist you in being the best you can be in whatever game you choose to play. When you master your game you will feel a greater sense of joy and success.

Master Your Game: Leveraging "Who" and "How"
As a leader, you will turbo charge your organization when you shift from a narrow focus on processes and results (what you are doing and the results you need to achieve) to transforming the players in your team (who you need to execute these processes). Leaders with great communication skills have the power to shift people's self-perception and improve their potential. When you understand who your people are and are able to assist them to be brilliant in how they undertake the business processes, success will follow.

Master Your Game: Meeting Effectiveness
Excellent meetings are productive, engaging, and synergistic; participants emerge from these sessions filled with great enthusiasm, energy, and a greater clarity of purpose. Effective meetings facilitate collective decisions that people will actively support by following through and taking action. Unfortunately, not all meetings are effective. Meetings can be energy-draining, time-wasting and costly.

Master Your Game: Meeting Process Design
After establishing and communicating the agenda to participants (see previous issues), the second step to conducting an effective meeting is designing the meeting process.* Designing the process means considering the meeting objectives, the scope of the topic, the discussion stage for each topic and the available time. Specifically, this article discusses strategies for managing the group size, thinking activities and discussion time.

Master Your Game: Reaching Greater Success
I hope you had as great a summer as I did. I have been busy finalizing five years of research for this next series of articles. But no need to feel sorry for me, this research was done during leisurely strolls on the golf course. The next four articles are focused on reaching greater success in our lives. I would like to share a personal experience and use my golf game as an analogy for the principles. We will explore: • Establishing your target - what do you really want to achieve? • Your technical game - what do you need to do to get to the target? • Your mental game - how important is who you are on the results you generate? • A consistent swing - what habits will assist you to achieve success?

Master Your Game: Taking Aim Pays Off
What if you hired a personal golf coach and started going to the driving range regularly to hone your swing? Your goal will be to consistently hit the green in regulation to lower your handicap. With sufficient practice, and by taking consistent action toward this goal, I bet you will accelerate your learning in perfecting your game. It works in golf, you say, but will hiring a coach help me in other aspects of my game?

Master Your Game: High Performance Teams
Many organizations talk about teams and teamwork but few really know how nor take the time to build teams. This article is the first in a series about teamwork. It explains the difference between a group and a team and outlines how dynamic teams lead to future success and growth.

Play Catch with Communication
An associate and I facilitated a dialogue session for the Delta Chamber of Commerce on the attraction and retention of employees in the workplace. The dialogue session uncovered five areas that influence employees in the workplace. They are: • Communication • Attitude • Flexibility • Opportunity to Learn • Fun This series of five articles will focus on each of the five areas from the dialogue session. Let’s begin with communication. Communication, in particular interpersonal communication, is the foundation for creating excellent organizations and great places to work.

FUN in the workplace...
Is FUN as waste of time or is it a necessity to increase productivity? If you and your employees are not having fun it is costing you money in all sorts of ways that you would likely prefer not to think about. Having fun is a necessity. Fun creates a good feeling inside of us a sense of euphoria. When we smile and laugh our brains produce a chemical serotonin that gives us this feeling of well being. Exuding this kind of energy is highly attractive for others; they may want to start hanging out with you.

Heed the Dalai Lama -- and Fortune Magazine
The Dalai Lama says: “One can be deceived by three types of laziness: the laziness of indolence, which is the wish to procrastinate; the laziness of inferiority, which is doubting your capabilities; and the laziness that is attached to negative actions, or putting great effort into non-virtue.” I really like this quote because it drives home an important point about personal responsibility and becoming an outstanding performer. The Dalai Lama doesn’t let us off the hook by saying, “I didn’t think I could do it.” Instead, he says that doubting our abilities is a form of laziness. That’s some tough love!

A Lesson From a Ski Hill
How often do we look around, get distracted and lose our focus? What does that cost us in business and in our personal lives?

Successful People Focus on Their Goals
Successful people commit to taking personal responsibility for their lives and careers. They set high goals and do whatever it takes to achieve them. Focus on your goals every day. Stop for a minute several times a day and ask yourself if what you are doing is bringing you closer to achieving at least one of your goals. If it isn't, stop what you're doing and start doing something related to achieving your goals.

Why You Must Master Self-Discpline
How many times have you felt the urge to take a small break and watch TV while you are in the middle of writing an article? Or perhaps you’re in the middle of making your prospect calls, and suddenly you decide you want to chat with your friend about weekend plans without completing your other calls? I know it’s important to take breaks once in a while, and you should to recharge your batteries, but have you ever experienced taking a break, and suddenly that break turns into a few hours and you suddenly don’t want to do that task anymore? Most of us have been guilty at one point or another, but it’s important to complete income-producing tasks to put you closer to your goals. Out of all the skills, mastering self-discipline and focus is key to success.

With this ability of vertical and horizontal jumping, the impala survives and thrives in the carnivore-infested savannas of Africa.

The Enduring Presence of Third Stringers
They are not on front pages. You may never read about them or hear their names in their playing days. But you will know their attachment to the sport they love long after those who had names on the front pages are long forgotten. Are You Tired of Making Other Peoples' Dreams Come True Instead of Your Own?
Life is not a game of chance, but a game of choice. Winners determine their futures in advance. They project what they want to occur in the future, and hold themselves accountable for that. My mentors often tell me that successful people and winners create their futures, rather than live reactive lives and acting like victims of circumstances. Most people, on the other hand, spend little time creating their dreams, and use most of their waking hours making other people’s dreams a reality.

Five things you should do right now to keep your small business growing
This has been one tough year for business. The economic storms have hit virtually every industry and every market and taken a heavy toll. But still, there are plenty of businesses who are doing well, and some are going strong. What is it that makes those businesses so successful in trying times like these? Certainly there are many factors, but here are five common factors that you are likely to find in every one of those standout businesses. Learn these five and your chances for success will go up.

The Pursuit of Flow
Being "in the flow" is that enthralled state, when your level of skill matches the level of the challenge. You become so engrossed in what you do that you forget to eat. You escape time. We’ve all been there. It’s what athletes call “being in the zone”, what musicians refer to as “being in the groove”. The concept of flow is the brainchild of psychologist Mihali Csikszentmihalyi. This article provides 10 practical tips for achieving this coveted state.

Commitment, Your Word is Your Bond
There are very few things a person has control over. We attempt to live our lives righteously, use our time wisely, improve our health and hold our tongue, but circumstances often change our intentions. We plan to accomplish tasks, which are good, and honorable yet they are often hindered.

How do You Stay Focused When Things Get Tough?
There are so many distractions out there that it takes intellectual effort to stay focused. Focus in on goals and rewards not the difficulties. Focus on results and you will succeed. Don't live in the past. Learn from it and let it go. The ability to forget is a talent of greatness. You cannot afford to look behind. Don't let little things bother you. Embrace and accept the fact that focus takes work. Leadership is a precious commodity. 3%'ers make the difference.

What Successful People Avoid in Their Communication
There are key, unbelievably overused sentences you must make efforts to consciously avoid in your communication, especially in these uncertain economic times. Check those who use these sentences frequently and chances are they are not on your list of the people you consider successful in any endeavor of life. I call them de-motivators and dream busters or responsibility deflectors. The moment you utter any of them, you surrender your desire for immediate action and “borrow” time to wallow in self pity-which is a dangerous move that will never bring either tangible or intangible results.

From Here, Now Where? What’s Not Working and What Will
You know how things are in your business, professional or personal endeavors. You have first hand knowledge of how our economy, that for the most part is still ailing, has affected everything you expect from whatever you do. Your passion, creativity and hope are on hold until “things change.” The reality is, until you ask yourself, “What’s not working for you, what will?” and then implement what will work, nothing will change. Your business, professional or personal pursuits will remain on hold and risk being forced to obsolescence until “things change.”

Whose Feather Are You Flying With?
As a leader, there is one fact you can't deny: you are in your position partly because other people helped you, with their talents, skills or resources, to achieve your vision. Emmett Smith, the Dallas Cowboys' running back who broke records and will one day join the elite NFL Hall of Fame Club, took the time when he retired to recognize 187 people who provided him with the "feathers" to be a star in football.

Un-used Potential
Millions of talents and gifts come and go from this world packaged within people who never used them. Yet, when you discover and use a hidden talent and/or gift, you significantly enrich your life and the lives of others.

Top 7 Leadership Lessons Learned From Gardening
Gardening has tips that can be applied in Gardening has tips that can be applied in leadership strategies, parenting and spiritual issues. My mother gave me a small plot to garden when I was ten-long before she bought me my first underwear and shoes. It was mine to cultivate, plant and care for my crops before harvesting them. Sugarcane was my crop of choice. I could harvest one at a time without asking for my parent's permission. At that tender age, I discovered a source of tranquility and moments for creative thinking that are rarely experienced in our fast paced world. Up to 1985, I gardened whenever schools were closed. What many consider manual labor was an interconnection of mental, physical, and spiritual aspects that always left a sense of significance words cannot describe.

My Father's Leadership
Today's decline of the social structures in America that hold families, corporations and other institutes together is largely attributed to ineffective leaders. As I reflect on the importance of quality leadership, I think of my father, Johnson Kituku Musoo. My father is a living testimony that what you don't have should not stop you from achieving what you want. His mother died before he turned ten, leaving him with a younger brother and sister to care for. I learned about his struggles from other people. I never heard him complain--although I once saw him cry, wishing that his mother was still alive.

Inspiring People for Maximum Productivity
It is amazing to learn and witness an ordinary teacher inspire average students for outstanding performance. There are numerous outstanding coaches who were never star players in their day. And there are the average employees who became leaders and turned organizations around-on the positive side. What one sees among these leaders, regardless of their background, is individuals with a vision, burning desire to turn that vision into reality, ability to communicate that vision to others in a way that inspires positive attitude, determination and action from the listeners.

Balancing Work and Life
A major explanation for stress has been uncertainty in the workplace as a result of increased competition, changing local and international trade regulations, merging of corporations and technological advances. These changes have been experienced nationally and locally, Idaho included. For example, Micron's production and profits are directly affected by business practices and turmoil in East Asia. Zilog, Hewlett-Packard, Ore-Ida Inc. and other corporations constantly make major business adjustments to be profitable in an emerging and unpredictable environment.

Beyond the Lion's Claws and Teeth of Your Future
Vision overshadows inadequacies related to skills, resources and abilities. It has been said, and proven to be true, that what your mind can conceive, and you believe in your heart, you can achieve. "The most beautiful emotion we can experience is the mystical. It is the power of all true art and science" (Albert Einstein). Dreams are the seeds of success.

Throughout our lives many unwelcome, unfavorable things will happen to us. We will face challenges and circumstances that are very difficult. But we need to be truly thankful. Lately I catch myself in mid-action, trying to remember what the heck I was doing. Or trying to remember what I was going to do next, where I was going when I started up my web browser. To add insult to injury, the other night I cut my finger reaching for my phone on my kitchen counter. I'd just turned the lights off but I knew the phone was there. Follow the Leader
We've been told for years that the best way to learn something is by example. That is why we are taught by teachers, use computer tutorials, and follow examples and exhibits in books.
