Crisis Communications Planning or What To Do Before During Or After It Hits The Fan

| Do you have a crisis management or crisis communications plan for your business or organization? Do you believe your business or organization is too small to need a crisis communications plan? Or do you believe that crises only happen to others?
If you are like the majority of businesses and organizations today, especially small to medium sized ones, you answered NO to the first question and probably YES to the second question. And I hope you answered NO to the third question.
Well, I cannot emphasize too strongly that no matter how big or small you are, every organization should have a crisis management and crisis communications plan.
So what should you do? The answer: develop a crisis management plan in 2 parts.

The importance of networking

This morning at 7.30am the Kenya ICT Board (www.ict.go.ke) held an open forum for the Kenya BPO & Contact Centre Society an umbrella organisation for all things outsourcing. I was to make a short presentation on some of the work we are doing on their portal, but I arrived a few minutes late so I wasn't slotted in, even though I was disappointed having worked on the powerpoint the previous night I opted to stay and hear what was to be said.

Why the Internet Matters in Africa

If anyone doubts the power of the internet in Africa, they need to look no further than what is happening in Kenya right now. Kenya is balanced on the precarious edge of a cliff that could quickly descend into even more riots, bloodshed and government heavy-handedness. The people I’m talking to via Skype/email tell me that there are gunshots going off as we type… This isn’t Zimbabwe (yet), but it is still bad.

Google is Moving in East Africa

7 Month old Google Kenya is starting to interact with the local hackers and devs. Just this Tuesday they sponsored the local Tuesday Skunkworks event, giving some of their thoughts on Kenya specifically. My friend, and fellow Kenyan blogger, Bankelele was in attendance and took notes.

How to write journal entries – The 3 must-ask questions

I am a big fan of Jim Rohn and Tony Robbins. One of the things that they both share in common is the habit of maintaining a journal. And what is the purpose of writing a journal? To jot down the lessons that life has taught you and how you contributed to your day. That’s why. As it’s said, ‘If life is worth living, then it’s worth recording’. But one of the more common challenges that people face is about what to write in the journal. I have been a victim of this disease, until recently. I learnt this very valuable lesson from Tony Robbins, which I am about to share with you.

Getting things going in a New Business

Starting a business of any size requires hard work and a dedication to details. It’s vital to understand and be in compliance with small business laws. Just because your small business is “small” doesn't mean that the growing stages of your business are any less important. Be prepared for a tough battle, the odds are against you. Dr. Gregory Murphy, dean and director of the MBA program at The College of Business at the University of South Indiana, has been quoted by the Evansville Business Journal that as many as 80% are out of business by the fifth year. SBA economist, Brian Headd, during his report to SCORE, states that a study showed that 48% of small businesses were still operating after four years. SBA further reports that more than 65% of businesses survive two years.

The Small Business Administration and Your Business

The Wall Street Journal article headline read: “Should the Small Business Administration Be Abolished?” The internet buzz is swirling with conjecture. There is, of course, no concrete evidence to this and organizations such as WIPP (Women Impacting Public Policy) are against the Small Business Administration (SBA) closing. This action would devastate many local programs supported by this government agency in many areas of the country.
