Nine Internal Traits for Success
| |
| There are nine traits that those of us truly interested in achieving success in our lives, need to be developing. Many people think that you must measure success by material items such as money in the bank or land owed. However, many people that have things things, live miserable lives. There must be something more. I propose that money, land and other material items are rewards from having success in our lives. We know we are succeeding when these things begin to arrive, but to truly measure success we need to look at our progress in nine specific areas. As these nine develop, we will KNOW we are successful because we will be truly happy. |

Leading Without Bullying
| |
| How often do you observe leaders and managers acting like bullies at work? The same people who would condemn a school for allowing bullying behavior on the part of some students toward their offspring are often guilty of doing the same thing in the adult world.
People in power positions do not realize how easy it is to slip into bullying behavior because they can get away with it most of the time. That is how bullying works after all. We teach our kids to stand up to a bully, yet few people have the gumption to do it at work.
This article highlights ten ideas to reduce bullying on the part of managers.

Prayer and purposeful action
| |
| I awoke early this morning to the sound of gentle rain falling and found myself immediately praying for more. This prayer came automatically during one of the most tragic weeks in Victoria’s history with the tragedy of the bush fires in many parts of our state.
As a Victorian I have found myself upping my prayer quotient for rain for some time now, not just for the bush fires but for the many people whose lives are affected by the drought here and elsewhere. In addition to my prayers, like many families, my family and I have been doing our best to save water and change the size of our carbon foot print. Yet at times like this one can’t help but feel somewhat helpless and useless. All I felt I could do under the circumstances was to pray and give money. |

Practicing Assertiveness
| |
| Very early Sunday morning I was waiting in line at Montreal’s airport. Despite the early hour, the airport was crowded and the lines at each of the security points were the longest I had ever seen them. People were patiently waiting; however there was an older gentleman who became quite distressed as he realized he would miss his flight due to the slow movement of the line. He attracted the attention of one of the officials, however they merely shrugged unhelpfully. Then two European men in their mid 30’s went to the aid of the older man, they asked all the people in the queue ahead of him would they mind if he jumped ahead of them to catch his flight. Of course no one minded and the man went quickly through security. |

CULTIVATING KINDNESS
| |
| This is the time when we should be mindful of being kind to others. They may be fearful as well and in the same mind frame. Being kind will spread positive energy that will not only help others but will come back to help you in such a huge way. When we are busy making sure that we have what we need, we can work from a place of fear. This is not in alignment with the Universe and will work against you in your effort to be okay. |

Key To Success: Showing Respect To The People You Make Contact With Daily

Ask, and You Shall Receive

“Ask” is a powerful word because it calls upon another person’s most noble motive—to serve. As a result, I’ve found that nearly all people will give when asked. You may recall the greatest teacher said, “Ask, and it shall be given you.” I believe you can get almost anything you want … if you ask.

Leadership Characteristics – Managing With Feeling
| |
|
Many business owners feel that they need to have “hard” leadership characteristics in order to get ahead or be successful. They believe that if they show any weakness or flexibility, that staff will “pounce” and take advantage of them.
When you look inside their companies, you see unhappy people (both managers and staff), all tightly hanging onto what is right in their view and making sure they get what they are entitled to.

The Avoidable Bane of Incompetency
| |
| "A surprisingly large number of people claim to have worked for a manager who was clearly incompetent. Some people even believe, that in certain sectors, the incompetent outnumber the competent. This book looks at when, why and how managers become incompetent and what to do about it. It does so with both science and humour by reviewing what we know about competences, about personality theory and about various salient psychiatric disorders." |

Mr. Grumpy
| |
| Unreasonable joy and happiness came to me on an ordinary day, an unremarkable day, when I was playing poker. The clatter of chips and the shuffling of cards played background music to the conversation of the players. Now and then, the dealer would call “Seat open!” and a floorman would escort another player to a table.... |

8 Be-Attitudes of Holding People Accountable
| |
| The phrase "We've got to hold our people accountable" is uttered in every organization every day. The sad thing is that, in most cases, it carries a negative connotation. It means, "We need to catch our people doing wrong things and tell them those behaviors are not acceptable."
I believe we can change the meaning of holding people accountable to one that is more balanced and not nearly as punitive. It is not just a matter of spin, it is a matter of attitude. I have a set of eight "Be-Attitudes" that can make a big difference if they are consistently applied.

Nice or Honest?
| |
| I’m leading one of my martial arts classes on a hot summer afternoon. The air conditioner is working full-tilt, but only teases us with an occasional whiff of cool air. The students are fully focused and sweating through a set of choreographed exercises we call “kata”.
After laying it all on the line they wait for my judgment...
I ask, “Do you want me to nice or honest?” |

The Heroic Path
| |
| We are all born heroes. We choose our path and destiny every moment of every day. The hero's path is one of healing, of trials, and of discovering true power and enlightenment. It is not the power of the ego-that desires power to boost itself through greed, pushing harder, or through acknowledging superiority over others.
Our deeper truth, the one we carry in our Souls, is that of great vision, of leaping over obstacles with courage. Our greatest power takes wings through love, and connecting with others through compassion and kindness. The hero within knows that contribution is the key to the greatest gift he or she can offer others. |

In Leadership Character Trumps Competence
| |
| We live in a society that thrives on 15-minutes-of-fame thrill rides. Reality shows like The Apprentice, where Donald Trump baits and then summarily fires contestants, dominate TV ratings. These shows frequently glorify the bad behavior that seems to be slowly, but surely, seeping into our society. The 24-hour news cycle is an endless stream of stories about leaders who have been caught doing bad things. In the midst of this barrage it is easy to lose faith that leaders can actually do good and serve others; that men and women of character still exist. |
