Carnegie Art Museum

When Andrew Carnegie thought about a museum collection, he envisioned creating a haven for “the old masters of tomorrow.” In 1895, that vision was realized with the founding of the Carnegie Art Museum. Today, that very Carnegie Art Museum remains one of the four pillars of the Carnegie Institute, along with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Carnegie Science Center. Located in Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Art Museum has a growing international reputation as one of the foremost leaders for the presentation of contemporary art, and remains as innovative as the day it first opened.

Opened on October 5, 1991, the Carnegie Science Center is the most visited museum in Pittsburgh. However, it has a long and rich history as one of the four distinctive museums that make up the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, including the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and the Andy Warhol Museum. Together, these institutions date back over 110 years.

Amazing Q&A with Alan Greenspan

If you ever have the chance to see Alan Greenspan do an hour of improptu Q&A in front of any audience (in this case 500 business people in Denver), do it. I went to the AMG National Trust Bank sponsored event today at the Denver Art Museum titled “Art, Alan and AMG.” It was awesome.

Are You a Human Being or a Human Doing?

| What's this personal time for? Anything other than work. Remember that gym membership? This is when you can actually use it. Or get a massage, visit a museum, browse the bookstore, or have lunch with a friend. This is [a part of] the time that will make you a well-rounded, interesting human being rather than a worker-bee "human doing."

Successful People are Optimists -- They Ask For, and Often Get What They Want

Self confident, optimistic people ask for what they want. They may not always get it, but often they do. If you want to become a career success, you need to be confident enough to ask for what you want. Randy Pausch and his father and son got to ride in the nose cone of the Disney World Monorail -- because he chose optimism and asked. Cathy and I got to see the sold out Inspiring Impressionism exhibit at the Denver Art Museum -- because she chose optimism and asked. Ask for what you want. You'll be surprised at how many times you'll get what you want.

The Global Significance of Art

As an artist, I believe that art lives. There is the spirit of the artist in each original piece of art. Of this I am sure. Does the spirit move also into each reproduction? This I am not so sure of. What I do know is that a piece of art can stop one cold in his or her tracks or a group of people cold in their tracks. You can see this yourself whenever you go to a major museum where they have the masters in their collections. And, of course, contemporary artists can also stop people in their tracks. Art is powerful. I love being an artist. I love that what Kant said about come comparing artists to God. Of course, it all comes from God. Where art is concerned, globally, it is a small world indeed.

How's Your Masterpiece Coming Along?

We were hanging out in Malibu this week, because we can, and we decided to go see what "The Getty Villa" is all about. I figured we'd spend a few minutes walking through the rich guy's old house, checking out some cool antique furniture and remnants of an opulent lifestyle of the past. Turns out it's a huge, full-blown art museum, and four hours later we still hadn't really seen it all....
