Check Your Thoughts
| |
| It was clear she was having "one of those days." But to be truthful, I didn't care. I was too nervous about my surgery to pay attention to Doris, the nurse grousing about how overworked she was that Thursday. But by the time I was wheeled back to my same-day surgical room, she was even less hospitable and entrenched in complaining. |

| The EEO-1 Report at a Glance
The Employer Information Report (EEO-1) classifies an organization’s employees by job category and then by ethnicity, race, and gender. Due every September, the EEO-1 is submitted to the EEOC and the Department of Labor, Office of Federal Contractor Compliance Programs (OFCCP). Beginning September 30, 2007, employers must use the newly revised EEO-1 Report. Since September’s report will be comprised of data collected this year, organizations should collect information per the new classification format as soon as possible. |

Socially Branded Journalism: Crossing the Generational Divide
| |
| On February 27th, 1968 Walter Cronkite closed his broadcast by introducing “an analysis that must be speculative, personal, [and] subjective.”
He was of course talking about the Vietnam War, and in particular the Tet offensive.
While those of us who have not yet cracked the half century mark in terms of years on this planet may have only a general awareness of what history has told us was a “police action” that could not be won, Cronkite’s words created a ripple effect that unknowingly and ironically has come to symbolize our fast paced, 7/24 instant access social media world. |

Small Business Jobs & Credit Act: What’s in it for Small Business?
| |
| On September 27th, President Obama signed into law, the much awaited Small Business Jobs & Credit Act. I’ve been surprised by how little most small business owners seem to know about the provisions of this law and what is in it for them. The most highly publicized feature of the bill is the $30 Billion dollar small business loan fund. For many or most small businesses, this may be the least relevant feature of the law. Other features of the law include tax breaks for small to medium sized businesses, tax incentives for equity investors in small businesses and some significant changes in SBA lending programs. |

| Their company was on the rise. They had gone from $50 million in sales to $250 million in just 10 years. They had a softball team, a family picnic every year, and a Christmas party that was so loved by everyone that groups of people would get blocks of rooms and stay the night to party together. Almost every Thursday the entire office would end up at a local bar for a few drinks together. Most of the Senior Vice Presidents made it on Thursday night as well.
And then the CEO decided to retire.

Preserving the Dignity of Our Workforce
| |
| We Americans celebrate Labor Day each September as a reminder of how those who toil daily are important to their families and to the country. I might offer to you that the first Monday in September is also Employers’ Day, for without employers, there are no employees. We in the human resource profession find ourselves in a no-man’s land as both an advocate for our employees and an instrument of our employers. Guest Writer Richard Virgilio explains. |
