| In yet another example of the value of collaboration over compliance the Commonwealth of Virginia was ranked alongside the States of Washington and Utah as a top performer in the PEW Center’s Grading the States 2008 report.
According to the PEW organization’s web site the report, which is designed to assess the “quality of management in the 50 states,” focuses on four key areas of government practice.

Project Failure

| Recently I read some disturbing information regarding major corporate initiatives. According to a survey by the Utah-based VitalSmarts:
• 82% of employees within companies with significant organization-wide initiatives underway believe those project will fail.
• 78% are currently working on a “doomed” project.
• 90% knew early on the project would likely fall short of the objectives
• 77% describe these projects as “slow motion train wrecks”
• 81% believe it is impossible to approach the failing project’s key decision-maker

| Have you seen that wild page on YouTube for the kitchen blender from BlendTec? More than 25 million people have visited that YouTube page to watch their blending antics. Over 3 million references to it are now on the web, not to mention that the question “Will it blend?” has become a household phrase. All from a small company out of Utah. |

| Thanks to the revolutionary power of social media, Earth Day has grown from 20 million participants in 1970 to one billion participants in 2010. Without the help of digital technologies, the first Earth Day demonstrations helped convince Congress to pass major environmental regulations. Four decades later, Senators are about to introduce their version of the climate change bill that passed in the House last year. Earth Day is an opportunity to send a clear message to lawmakers demanding that they pass climate change legislation.
