Powerful Coaching Distinction: Working In Vs. Working On Your Life
| |
| Having been a professional coach for over 16 years, and having been in over a dozen coaching relationships as a client during that time, I’ve had the opportunity to examine what makes coaching so powerful and effective. It’s my personal view that one of the most beneficial tools that can enhance a client’s life is coaching distinctions. You can think of a coaching distinction like a lens through which you look at life, and in the process life shows up differently.
For example, when my mechanic, Dale, looks under the hood of my car he sees a whole different world than I do. I see mostly dirt and oil and maybe the oil dip stick and radiator cap. But because Dale has many more ‘engine distinctions’ he’s the one I’m going to call on if my car won’t start in the morning.
In short, the more distinctions we have AND USE, the more powerful... |

| |
| Skeptics and non-believers are everywhere. They cast doubt on the existence of things that turn out to be real good. For example, when people fall prey to Internet scams and pyramid schemes, they begin to be prejudiced against online marketing and look at it as evil. The truth is there is a good and bad side to every human enterprise. The few bad eggs in network marketing are simply not enough to spoil the whole basket. |

The bad news is that it doesn't stop. People will always get used to things the way they are, become more demanding, and wanting more. Such it is with technology and speed. Everyone asks me when things will "return to normal" and "slow down." It won't. The speed at which you're operating is now what's expected. Welcome to the new normal! |

| Balance is better understood as flow. For instance, I'm building my business right now. It's been my full-time occupation for about six months, and I've spent a disproportionate amount of time during that six months on my business. Since I've made the choice to pass up a variety of recreational activities -- everything from going to the movies to taking a spa vacation with a friend -- it would be easy to conclude that I'm "out of balance."

Enjoying the Balanced Life in Five Easy Steps
| |
| What is a balanced life? Isn't it all in the mind? Whether you believe your life is balanced or not, you need to deal with the reality and here is where you start. |
|
|
Passing Up Good for Great
| |
| Work/life balance requires surrender of part of one area - whether it's time spent on work or time spent on personal matters - in favor of the other. But we don't generally like giving up anything we want. We want it all, and we want it all now. Maturity requires us to recognize that perhaps we can have it all (though that too is open to question), but we certainly can't have it all at the same time. The single most useful skill for deciding how to arrange this work/life balance is the ability to pass up good for great. Learning that skill requires that we be able to recognize what's good and what's great, to identify appropriate time frames to help with the good/great evaluation, and to guard our decisions zealously.

Are You a Human Being or a Human Doing?
| |
| What's this personal time for? Anything other than work. Remember that gym membership? This is when you can actually use it. Or get a massage, visit a museum, browse the bookstore, or have lunch with a friend. This is [a part of] the time that will make you a well-rounded, interesting human being rather than a worker-bee "human doing."

AN EXAMPLE OF AN ACTION PLAN
| |
| Some helpful hints to enhance the possibility of attainment of goals:
1. Commitment and a planned approach to an Action Plan or a Learning Plan is more likely to achieve results. Goals must be written down.
2. Be expressed in the present tense, as if they were real.
3. Clear and sharp focus on the short steps necessary to achieve the results.
To illustrate how this might work in real life, let us take an example of an athlete who wants to improve the speed at which he or she runs 1500m. Here is an example what An Action Plan to achieve the goal might look like: |

Value your time as you can bet your customer’s won’t
| |
| Owning your own small business isn’t just a normal job, its 15 jobs or more all at once. You have to be your own PR specialist, marketing manager, bookkeeper, and receptionist in addition to the overseeing the primary product or service of your business – be it website design, marketing consulting, or pottery production. It is highly likely that you work 16 hours a day and only have time for the bare necessities. Maybe you even miss dinner every other day and hardly have time for your family. |

Al Gores’ Approach to Work-Life Balance
| |
| In Al Gore’s documentary on global warming (An Inconvenient Truth), he makes reference to a picture used by the Bush administration to illustrate the conflict between money and environment. In the picture, there is a scale: on one side of the scale, there is a pile of gold bars, on the other the earth. As Al Gore somewhat wryly pointed out…gold is not much use to you if you have no earth.
I must say the same thought strikes me when I read about “work-life balance.” |

Work Enjoyment Helps Employee Retention.
| |
| Employee retention is about the nature of the work itself and the work environment/culture.
What can you do?
Firstly, you have to get the basics right - good pay, appropriate conditions, etc.
Secondly, you have to remove the fear of uncertainty - employees should feel safe and secure in their employment. They should not be concerned about your employment practices. They should not picture you 'with a whip'.
Thirdly, you have to work hard to create and maintain a good work culture and climate.

Training Managers to Meet Business Goals Using Work-Life Strategies
| |
|
Training managers to use work-life tools is essential in creating a supportive culture and ensuring that everyone at the manager level (and, thus, those they supervise) are on the same page. When managers apply work-life programs as direct business solutions to the common issues employees face everyday, they discover that they can reduce absenteeism, turnover, and realign their teams, which is particularly beneficial when it comes to talent and performance management. Instead of using traditional training programs for managers, the authors recommend a tool that they have created—the Manager’s Solution Forum. This accelerated learning approach engages participants from beginning to end which results in an increased level of understanding and utilization of work-life as a business strategy. |

Work Life Harmony, Rather Than Work Life Balance
| |
| Work life balance suggests people are living two lives, one at work and one away from work. But people don't 'work' for five days or more and 'live' for two days or less. Work is just one of many roles that people perform in their week. No matter where they are or what they are doing, day or night, people are carrying personal baggage, problems, responsibilities, personal goals and work goals. Separation of work and personal life roles has become a blur and, to many of us, almost a seamless link.
Family friendly policies are now only one aspect of the work life balance issue. Work life balance has become a key factor in attracting and retaining good staff, male and female in a buyers market generated by a shortage of quality skilled staff. |

Young Men Struggle with WorkLife Balance Too
| |
| Is it true that women are the only ones in the workplace struggling to maintain a healthy work-life balance? It might seem so because women are traditionally viewed as the caregivers, childminders, and home-makers. Trying to balance all of those roles with the demands of work can truly prove overwhelming, even for the most adept multi-tasker. However, recent research would suggest that men - young men in particular - are also at risk for increased stress due to struggling with work-life balance. |

Put Life Into Your Work And Put Work Into Your Life

Do these supposed work life balance experts that parrot this idealistic mantra belief that the occupation that you choose should be a sidelight in your life? Is your work really some evil dastardly villain that steals all your time and the possibility of any joy or fulfillment outside its walls?
Tt's time to bring some balance to the whole work life balance debate... |

| |
| During these times of unprecedented economic turmoil the pressure on businesses to survive is immense. The real question to ask is how sustainable is your business? Or another way of saying it is, "Does your business/work environment have a healthy work life balance?"
A healthy work life balance is a lifestyle where your habits and actions result in the sustainable growth and development of your health, wealth, business/career, family relationships, social relationships and fulfilment and enjoyment of your life. When your habits and actions at work or at home do not have a work life balance then something in your life will give and will break down.

A Healthier Approach To Work Life Balance
| |
| Why is it that so many people in there thirties and forties are so stretched to the limit that their bodies and minds are stretched close to breaking point? It just seems that we have got the whole work life balance out of sync. For some reason we have designed it so that your career obligations (and time required at work) peak during the most important time of your young families life. Then when your children are grown up and have left the house you are then encouraged to reduce your workload and retire. It's time for a new approach to a healthy Work Life Balance...
A truly healthy work life balance isn't just an allocation of time. A healthy work life balance also involves an allocation of your energy to devote to your work and to other interests outside of work.

| |
| Whether you manage one person, or lead an organization with thousands of employees, supporting your staff to create a better work-life balance makes sense and cents. You can make a difference in your employees work-life balance by giving them support and tools to make choices that fit with each person’s individual work-life preferences. Keeping your staff satisfied keeps them working well and working for you. |

Life/work balance is nonsense
| |
| I hear a lot of talk about life/work balance and I think most of it is nonsense.
The word balance for me implies equal. I prefer the word harmony, therefore life/work harmony.
My personal and business life are not equal or in balance and are never likely to be.
They are in harmony with one another, that is, they work together like a symphony, two sides of the same coin. |
