Interviews or interrogations?
Interviews are part of an organization's landscape yet from research it seems that many could be handled much better. It is one thing to be interviewing people, yet another to be interviewed. We need to be on both sides of the table in order to assess their effectiveness.

Keep your eye on the ball
It's very difficult to stay focused when there is so much to do. You have a list, a commitment to doing what is necessary to achieve the organizational goals but there is so much to distract you. You start the morning with good intentions and check the email. You've got your list to follow and then you find that there are things that are very important - it's only 8.00am in the morning and you have already let your daily list slide...

New to the job
This article has been written to assist new-leaders of local government. However, the information is just as useful for anyone who has moved into a management role. Rules and regulations change from state to state and country to country but one thing doesn't change: you have to know how to fit-in with your new group and how to manage constituents or employees.

One small step for you: One giant leap for your Organization
Times are tough in the business world; very tough in some countries. Regular reports indicate that this is the worst Global Financial Crisis we’ve experienced since WW11. It has made leaders stop and rethink the way they have been doing things. It has made them reevaluate their systems and processes in order to ascertain just how successful they really are. Performance Development Programs (PDP’s) are one way that your organization can improve workplace productivity. Implementing new systems and processes is laborious at first; however setting up and using PDP’s is essential if you are serious about increasing business productivity. They don’t have to be complicated, in fact the simpler the better. When done properly they are a valuable resource for not only you but for your employees as well.

You need one, I need one: we all need a break
In the current economic climate the mantra is to work harder and harder. This is a global phenomenon and we are told it regularly. There is no time for a break; you just have to keep pushing yourself. Everyone else is doing it - so of course you must follow suit. It's expected that this behavior will impact on productivity in all the right ways and that the organisation will go from strength-to-strength. Those in leadership are not immune from this pressure. It is not only difficult to continue to work harder and harder, it is impossible because there comes a point when the bone has no more meat on it. While sustainable for awhile, over time issues start to emerge. Pressured, exhausted leaders can experience a loss of confidence, self esteem, lack of clarity and mental and/or physical health issues can appear...

Are you fishing or hoping for a free boat ride?
This morning Joanne and I were talking to some locals on a tiny island where we’re hanging out for a few days. We saw a fishing boat come in right after a pretty violent storm. There were probably 20 guys hanging around the edges of this very small boat. No one is paid for their services – they all fish and keep track of their catch. Typically, they pay the captain and owner of the boat 2 pounds of fish per day for the privilege of fishing from his boat.

Start Something that Matters
Fortunately for us, in his new book Start Something that Matters, Blake tells us we don’t have to choose. As he shares the story of how he started TOMS, one of the fastest-growing shoe companies in the world, he says we don’t have to choose. And furthermore, we’ll have more success if we don’t settle for less than combining all three elements. I love his chapter titles – the six steps for creating your own life.

Why Employees' Leisure Interests are Good for Business
We all possess unique skills and talents, many of which come to the fore only when pursuing passionately-enjoyed leisure interests. Yet most businesses still only focus on the skills and abilities stated on job specifications. Skills audits rarely ask “what skills and abilities do you enjoy using in your personal life?” Passion promotes potential. To ignore skills used in passionate leisure interests is a major loss to the workplace.

Leisure Is As Important As Work
Leisure is no longer a dirty word in business. In fact its part of a new human resource trend to improve business productivity. Leisure has been out of favour since the Industrial Age work ethic killed it off generations ago as "a waste of productive time”. There's at least five good reasons why it's back in vogue.

Are You Shortening Yourself on Your Invoice
If you sell services, you may be working for free. When I’m working with self employed business owners who sell services, I nearly always find that they are not billing for some part of their work. That is, their invoices are missing what they could get paid. These lost billings can be the difference between making a living and having money for business and family security, expansion, and retirement.

WHY WORK?
I was recently accused by a friend as a “WORKAHOLIC”. And, yes I occasionally do log in quite a few hours in a week. But my argument (and I’m sticking with it) to this accusation was surprisingly easy. I told him with some emotion and honest conviction that “I AM NOT A WORKAHOLIC!”

Powerful Coaching Distinction: Working In Vs. Working On Your Life
Having been a professional coach for over 16 years, and having been in over a dozen coaching relationships as a client during that time, I’ve had the opportunity to examine what makes coaching so powerful and effective. It’s my personal view that one of the most beneficial tools that can enhance a client’s life is coaching distinctions. You can think of a coaching distinction like a lens through which you look at life, and in the process life shows up differently. For example, when my mechanic, Dale, looks under the hood of my car he sees a whole different world than I do. I see mostly dirt and oil and maybe the oil dip stick and radiator cap. But because Dale has many more ‘engine distinctions’ he’s the one I’m going to call on if my car won’t start in the morning. In short, the more distinctions we have AND USE, the more powerful...

Live So That You May...
I know I want to live my life in a way that I would want to life the same life all over again. That’s the way ideas get re-circulated. And that reminds me of another great quotation: "There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We just take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn, and they create new and curious combinations. We keep turning making new patterns, but they are the same old pieces of glass that have been in use throughout all the years." --Mark Twain So I’ll probably take Nietzsche’s quotation, refine it a little and make it my own.

Ledership Vs. Followership
A strange paradox; America wants better leaders but invests nothing in followership.

7 Day Challenge to Being Happier Today
So, what is this challenge that can make you happier in just 7 days? NO complaining for 7 days! Of course the goal is to keep it up after 7 days. :-) I’m not talking about just the big complaints… like “oh my gosh, the dog had another accident on the rug!” but also the little complaints like, “traffic is so slow this morning,” “it’s so cold outside, winter stinks, why won’t the kids pick up their toys, I hate these shoes, my co-worker is a jerk,” etc. We all do it, often without even realizing that we’re complaining.

3 Ways of Leading
This is when there were way too many frustrations. It was the biggest paradox at work. They loved it when he left them alone and hated it when they asked for his help and he would shrug and say "You take care of it. That's what I'm paying you for."

Say Goodbye to Procrastination……Today
"I'll get it to you later this afternoon" can send a sigh of relief through your body or a shudder of gloom. It all depends on who is making that statement. If you work with a procrastinator life can be full of stress and deep-seated anger. So, what can you do? First thought is to fire the slug! Slow is okay, tardy is often acceptable. However, promises that are made and never kept, well, that is another story.

Does Direct Mail Really Work?
6 Simple Rules for Creating Direct Mail That Gets Your Phone to Ring.

Work Life Harmony, Rather Than Work Life Balance
Work life balance suggests people are living two lives, one at work and one away from work. But people don't 'work' for five days or more and 'live' for two days or less. Work is just one of many roles that people perform in their week. No matter where they are or what they are doing, day or night, people are carrying personal baggage, problems, responsibilities, personal goals and work goals. Separation of work and personal life roles has become a blur and, to many of us, almost a seamless link. Family friendly policies are now only one aspect of the work life balance issue. Work life balance has become a key factor in attracting and retaining good staff, male and female in a buyers market generated by a shortage of quality skilled staff.

This article will interest those who think the title should read work minus leisure equals wealth.

How to Choose Office Cubicles
In determining what type of office cubicles will be the best choice for a business, it is important to consider a variety of factors. The nature of the business and the potential need for additional employees will impact a business’s decision about the type of cubicles to purchase. It also is important to keep in mind the nature of the work in which the business’s employees will be engaged as well as the need for a pleasant working environment. Before the installation of cubicles, a business needs to carefully design its floor plan. The amount of floor space available, the number of work-stations, and the quantity of space an employee needs to accomplish his tasks all must be thoroughly thought out. All of these considerations will impact the size and type of cubicles a business should purchase.

Maturity is About Being True to Yourself
From age 50 to 60 has become perhaps the most crucial time for reviewing your life. Nature seems to say we have matured to a point whereby its time to again think about our life’s big picture. It’s time to re-connect with your essence - the person you really are, the product of your seed, your genes, your natural selection process. The person you ‘just are’ – a mixture of your natural talents, skills and passionate interests. It’s not about what you’ve done in life to date. Rather, its about allowing your essence to rekindle its natural desire to pursue ‘the magnificence of uncertainty’. Do it while you still have the health and strength to do so.

The Incompetent Interviewer
If you've been job hunting lately, chances are strong you've run into an incompetent interviewer. My experience is that many people responsible for interviewing see it as a necessary evil. It's not what they want to do so it's something to get over quickly so they can go back to what it is they do well. Don't assume you will be meeting with a polished interviewer.

Stop Making Decisions – just do what’s important!

Michael Hyatt guest post today - Forget the royalties – just give my book away
I have yet to meet an author who thought his/her publisher did enough marketing or who was satisfied with . Most have the fantasy of writing the book, submitting the manuscript, and then sitting in a lawn chair next to the mailbox, waiting on those big checks to show up. The reality of publishing and the source of real income is a quite different picture. Several years ago , author of , told a small group of us author wannabes something that revolutionized my approach to writing. He said, “Everyone I meet wants to write a book. I tell them, ‘Write your book. Do a great job. Now you’re 10% finished. The remaining 90% consists of marketing, promoting, developing ancillary products, etc.’”

Can you do that a little faster?
This morning the local electric company showed up to dig the hole for a new pole on our property. They had already determined the hole would be going through rock so they brought in the right truck to do the job. As an old farm boy I was fascinated so I picked their brains for some interesting information.

Details, Extras & the Personal Touch of Extraordinary Service
Success can be an early warning indicator for failure. Extraordinary service delivery is simple in concept but difficult in execution. It means paying attention to the details, including the nuances of relationship. Remember that all business is personal so the personal touch is one of your most powerful tools.

Do the Opposite....
I have never been a fan of "normal.” Even as a little kid I was drawn to things that were different. I wanted a bicycle that stood out from the crowd – not more expensive or even better – just different. I built my first car from the ground up so I could have something that would stand out. I moved on to college options that were different, completing bachelors and masters degrees with no debt.

Don’t Wait for Perfect…..
One of the beauties of today’s workplace is that we can just get in the game and then refine our business as we go. The unfinished and imperfect business, book, website, house, job, garden, or fashion design is a starting point. Releasing a trial version can be an act of transparency – and an invitation to customers and friends to help complete and improve it.

The 5% Challenge
I am very intentional about my use of time, working from a schedule that I create weeks in advance. But that does not mean that I work head down for 8 hours without taking a break. I once worked with a high-level financial executive that told me for 26 years at his previous company he had worked “head down, pencil up.” And he was dreadfully out of touch with currents trends and opportunities.

Top 7 Things You Need to Know About Business and Social Networking

Live Your Talents, Love Your Work
“Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” Most of us are familiar with this quote from Confucius, but what does it mean? To veteran business coach Lynda-Ross Vega, a job you love means one that’s supported by your natural skills and abilities. Work and drudgery are not synonymous!

The “adjacent possibility”
A few years ago biologist and researcher Stuart Kauffman came up with a term he called “the adjacent possible.” It’s a complex theory but here’s a simple way to look at it. Think of being in a house that magically expands with every door you open. You walk into a room and see three more doors leading out. Once you open one of those doors you enter another room with another three doors leading to yet new rooms. Keep opening doors and eventually you’ll realize you’re in an expanding palace.

That dog won’t hunt
Here we are at the end of March already. I was talking with a friend the other day about an old farmer’s adage we used to anticipate in March regarding the weather: “In like a lamb, out like a lion.” Or “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” The expectation was that if we had harsh winter weather at the beginning of March we would have mild weather at the end – and vice versa. I have no idea why that is expected but it reminds me of all the little clichés that we accept as reality. As farmers we also used to cite, “Red in the morning, sailors warning; red at night, sailors delight.”

Learn How to Celebrate You!
For many who go through life feeling vaguely dissatisfied and unfulfilled, veteran business coach Lynda-Ross Vega has a solution: the Perceptual Style Theory and her Perceptual Style Assessment. Upon learning more about the theory, and reading the results of the assessment, many people experience a sense of validation: they begin to understand not only what makes them unique, but also how to embrace – and celebrate – their unique talents and skills. The result: happier, more fulfilled lives.

Would you hire this person?
This addresses a pet peeve of mine. And that’s the “Objective” on resumes. Here is a recent example on a resume submitted for my review: “To support the growth and profitability of an organization that provides challenge, encourages advancement, and rewards achievement with the opportunity to utilize my experience, skills, and proven abilities.” Sounds great – would you like to hire this person? But what do you know about this person? Is he/she a candidate for flipping hamburgers or for a CEO position? Does he have skills in supervising, organizing, planning, selling, marketing, etc? Is she proficient in any computer skills? We don’t know. This “Objective” tells us absolutely nothing about the person. It was a total waste of time on the applicant’s part.

Open Door - Right Direction?
Here’s a reader question: Dan, My big goal is to start a business and I’ve taken the first few steps. My broad goal is simply to find a different job. It’s funny though – the more I work on my business plan, the more interviews and job opportunities come open to me. I’m not sure if it’s a sign that I’m really headed on the right track (and the other jobs are distractions) or if it’s a sign that there’s something else out there for me (just a different job, not my own business). How do you figure that out?

Ten Tips on Delegating
One way to manage your time more effectively is to delegate work to others on your staff or to contract workers you hire for specific projects. Show people that you can work, that you know how to work and you are a valuable commodity. Here are a few thoughts on a simple way to leverage your future that's simple and easy if you already have what it takes. Not matter what office you work in, it is stressful. Whether you work for Google or a small 5-man business, it’s something that you simply cannot avoid. Nowadays, the world puts so many demands on us that we sometimes have to find a balance between work and play. We rush here, we rush there, we work longer hours, we have the family chores to do, we sleep and we want to have fun as well, don’t we? Unfortunately, work is taking over our lives and that impacts our lifestyle. Some of those that decide to put their lifestyle before their work can end up losing their jobs and that’s wrong but in today’s work environment, it is unfortunately true. But that doesn’t mean you have to ignore your personal life just so you can continue to climb up the ladder of job success.

Tips on How to Avoid Procrastination
As a work at home mom you will have plenty of free time and flexibility to do your work as and when it suits you. Although the great level of freedom and flexibility is something that you can enjoy; there is also a downside to it. Most work at home moms end up procrastinating their work for the uncertain future. Procrastination can be quite tiresome, particularly as it halts the work and brings about a sense of lethargy to your daily schedule.

Entrepreneur Strategies: The Home-Work Connection
When you are stressed at work do you ever say "My home is my haven?" And when there is too much going on at home think "I can't wait to get to work so I don't have to think about the problems at home?" Work and home seem like different worlds. We say we want work/life balance as if they are opposite chunks of matter we can weigh on a scale. Thinking we can totally separate who we are at work from who we are at home is an illusion. Sure, there are some differences. Yet, the common denominator is that we bring ourselves to work, with all our patterned behavior, and we take that same self home. The other common denominator is that work and home are both relationship systems that are powerful influencers on us.

50/50 Never Works in Relationships
The old cliche in order to make it work we have to have a 50/50 deal. You have to do your part and I have to do mine. We have to split things evenly. This business partnership will only work if it is 50/50. This marriage will only work if it is 50/50. Otherwise it is never going to work. Any of that sound familiar to you? We have heard that one before. Of course we have. Yet things don't work when we give 50 and the other person gives 50. Trust me. We tried it in business. We tired it in marriage. And what we have found to many times is that things still don't work. Why?
