5.0 Decent work, poverty eradication and policy coherence: Working Out of Poverty
| |
| Over the next ten years, over 1 billion young people, today aged between
5 and 15, will enter the working-age population. However, the global
economy is not well organized to make full use of the enormous potential of
their skills, energy and ambition to fight against poverty and make development
sustainable. Today’s working life offers opportunities to some, but lowpaid
work, unemployment and poverty to a great many. |

Wanted: jobs for Africa’s youth - Job Plans
| |
| However, most countries have not yet incorporated job creation plans into their national development frameworks. The national strategies include anti-poverty programmes, commonly based on Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs). These are documents developed with assistance from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to set national priorities, direct spending of debt-relief funds and coordinate donor programmes.

Wanted: jobs for Africa’s youth - Entrepreneurship
| |
| Another focus of action has been on spreading entrepreneurship skills beyond the schools. A number of countries have introduced entrepreneurship training programmes, including Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Policymakers believe that the promotion of small-business enterprises and the informal sector offer quick solutions to joblessness. |

Wanted: jobs for Africa’s youth - Public Works
| |
| In many countries, immediate, short-term solutions are needed to quickly ease the burden of unemployment. Public works programmes are a popular option. South Africa, which commits more than $800 mn to public works, has one of the best programmes on the continent, reports the ILO. In terms of technical design standards and the quality of completed physical infrastructure, the country’s public works programme “was regarded as surpassing anything that the ILO members of an evaluation team had encountered in more than 30 developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific,” notes the ILO.

1.6 Investing in jobs and the community: Working Out of Poverty
| |
| The ILO has invested 25 years of pioneering work in the field of
employment-intensive infrastructure programmes. It has been successful. It
is now widely recognized that these programmes are effective in bringing
much needed income to poor families and their communities. These efforts
create between three and five times as much employment for the same level
of investment. |

Concluding Remarks - Factors Impeding the Poverty Reduction Capacity of Micro-credit: Some Field Observations from Malawi and Ethiopia
| |
| One of the most important outcome of the analysis in this paper has been that while most MFI
programmes aim to reduce poverty and empower women through their programme, there is usually
no clear implementation mechanism to fulfil these aims; they continue to be programmes with the
same requirements and characteristics. |

What's Missing from Leadership Development Programmes?
| |
| There is one area that has not been covered in leadership development programmes very well. It’s what Otto Scharmer calls the Blind Spot of Leadership, and he’s referring to what goes on inside the leader. Most leadership development programmes only address what goes on outside leaders – that is their behaviours and the knowledge and skills that is it thought guide the leaders actions. This article will outline a 'map' of the interior landscape of the leader and the actions that result when this is well developed. |

Small Business Tips: Turning Words Into Deeds
| |
|
Deed is just another name for action. First you need to ensure you have thought and imagined the foundations of your business – getting clear on your products, services and customers. Next you need to have "inked" these thoughts into plans, brochures, web sites and copy. Finally you need to take action.
Action is where you put your energy behind your thoughts. There are many sayings around the importance of action "You miss 100% of all shots you fail to take", "You've got to be in it to win it" and "The journey of 1000 miles begins with just one step" are a few of my favourites.

A Call to Action for the Sales Force

| Al Gore has become more famous for his call to action against global warming than he ever was as Vice President of the United States.
Pope John Paul II was noted for his "stand up for life" call to action.
The charities that you support have calls to action that either inspire you or embarass you into giving.
Yesterday, Barack Obama included a call to action in his inaugural speech. |

Action Plan Example
| |
| Action plans are fairly common in business, but probably done wrong as often as not. A lot of people do not understand what an action plan is and often mistake it for a COE or Correction Of Errors, not one of my favorite types of documents. Having a good action plan starts with an understanding of what an action plan is and a great action plan example would be a huge help in this.
An action plan is a forward looking document and should be addressed as one. When looking at an action plan example one should take this into account. Action plans prevent business gaffs, keep everyone on task and help smooth out operations. In a way they could be considered a mini business plan, though I tend to look at them as a working business plan. |

It Takes More Than Marketing to Attract Big Bucks
| |
| Marketing is an action. Action doesn’t create a result. It’s all about what is driving the action. You need to be fully into it before, during and after the action for it to create the impact that you want. |
