Productivity effects of ill health and malnutrition: The Effects of Human Capital on Economic Development
| |
| Less research has been done on the returns to health and nutrition than on the returns to education.
This is partly because the non-monetary aspects of these returns - greater longevity, reduced suffering
and absence of disability - are arguably more central than in the case of education. |

Children's fitness tax credit
| |
| Federally, a non-refundable tax credit is available to parents who incur costs associated with registering their child in a prescribed program of physical activity. The child whom the parent claims this expense for must be under the age of 16 at the beginning of the year or if eligible for the disability credit, under the age of 18. A parent is allowed to claim up to $500 of expenses per year, per child. For 2009, the tax credit is equal to 15% of the expense claimed. For children eligible for the disability credit, an additional $500 in expenses can be claimed if the total expenses are at least $100. You should receive or ask for a receipt from the organization that provides the prescribed activity. |

Disturbing Trend in Michigan: Disability Claims Approved And Then Abruptly Taken Away Within a Year
| |
| Insurance companies sell group policies that some courts have ruled provide little or no coverage. Congress approved ERISA to “protect” employees’ pensions but in doing so unwittingly gave disability insurance companies a free pass to play the game on a field that is not level. That practice has been challenged by a lawsuit against insurance giant UnumProvident (Unum) charging that the insurance carrier devised a scheme to illegally deny or terminate the long-term disability claims of thousands of people in violation of ERISA. |

ADA - a heart issue !!!

| A few weeks ago I attended a series of seminars on ADA sponsored by the San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architects. ADA stands for The American Disability Act Law implemented in 1990, prohibiting disability discrimination. ADA standards govern the construction and alteration of places such as commercial facilities, state and government facilities and public accommodations. The Department of Justice adopted new standards for accessible design in September 2010 and these will go into effect March 15, 2012.

Insurance For Disabilities for Individuals
| |
| Short term disability income insurance is available immediately should you get injured or have an illness and are unable to work. This type of coverage can last from a few weeks or up to 12 months or more, depending on the specifics of the plan you have. Most employers offer this type of plan as part of their benefits package. In fact, some states require employers to make some sort of short term disability income insurance, available to their employees. |

BUY/SELL AGREEMENT
| |
| It is a strategy to ensure the continuity of a business should a partner leave the business. This may be a planned retirement or because of death or a disability. It is basically a funding arrangement for the remaining partners or owners to purchase the share of the business from the departing participant. |
