Wikipedia for Patents
| |
| John Funk, an entrepreneur (I’m an investor in John’s newest company – Evergreen IP) and friend has a innovative proposal up concerning changing the rules on the current patent system. I’ve been on both sides of the patent aisle with John – we like to joke that early on in our relationship John’s company sued one of my companies (and then my company sued John’s company back) for patent infringement (the companies settled several years later for a cross license and $1 – much to the delight of the lawyers who got all the bucks.) Fortunately we got past all that crap and have developed a nice friendship. |

Because they weren't complaining about agendas and getting the story wrong when the media wrote positive stories about them. This article provides some lessons, regardless of your political views, based on the recent skirmish between President Obama and Fox News.

Why Do We Not Need Health Care Reform?
| |
| Last year I wrote an article about consumer driven health care and I told the story of a woman who paid over $300 per month to insure herself and her teenaged child. She required dental surgery that would take several iterations, but was not able to finish the process because she could not pay the $3000.00 bill. So the world turned and a year later she finds herself working for this very same insurance company, and guess what? She only pays $20 a month for her coverage. There is a saying that came to mind when I heard about that "somebody is buying you wholesale and selling you retail". I mean seriously people, if the insurance company employees can pay only $20 per month for coverage, why are you and I paying upwards of $300.00? What the heck are we paying for exactly? |

SEO Page Rank - It’s not about Who YOU Know… ...It’s About Who Knows YOU
| |
| Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is part science and part magic. Well, maybe not REAL magic, but there is a lot going on behind the curtain that most folks never get to see.
Scoring a Top 10 listing in Google requires a scientific approach towards getting a lot of little pieces set up correctly. And then there’s that hunk of magic.
If we were to give that magic portion a name, it would be called “Page Rank (PR).”
PR is the technical term for an unknown, unrevealed, unpublished “magic formula” that Google uses to measure a website's link popularity on a scale from 0-10.
So how does Page Rank (PR) get calculated?

How to Maintain Motivation
| |
| The basic key to motivation is to enjoy what you are doing. Sounds simple doesn’t it? One of the major issues, however, is that we have so many options with how to spend our time that it is easy to find something that we will enjoy doing. Selling the Customer What the Customer Needs Not What You Want
| |
| I’d like to tell you a little story about Sam, an old acquaintance of mine. The first time I met Sam I had stopped in his little general store while passing through town to buy some soda for my long car ride back home. His was the only store in this very small rural town and he did a sizable amount of business. As I walked down one of the aisles to get to the refrigerated coolers in the back where they kept the soda, I couldn't help but notice that the shelves were loaded with containers of salt for sale. There were salt containers from the front of the aisle to the back, from top to bottom, and on both sides of the aisle. I couldn't believe it, an entire aisle dedicated to just salt. |

King of the Online Jungle: The Early Years of Jeff Bezos
| |
| When McKenzie Tuttle walked down the aisle to say “I do” to her husband-to-be Jeff Bezos, she thought she was marrying into a secure future. At the time, Bezos was in his 30s and serving as Vice President of an investment firm in New York City. It was a job he liked – and one that paid well – but Bezos couldn’t shake this crazy idea from his head; he wanted “to create the world’s most customer-centric company, the place where you can find and buy anything you want online.” That stable life McKenzie once had was almost immediately turned upside down when Bezos decided to launch Amazon.com. As fate would have it, Bezos’ small garage startup would go on to become one of the leading e-commerce sites in the world, with revenues exceeding $8 billion. |

Don't Drive in the Dark
| |
| We recently utilized our airpower against Libya arguably by numerous people from both side of the aisle without an End Game. To me, that is like driving in the dark. At that point we have no idea of the outcome. Without lights, euphuism for an End Game, the odds are not in our favor. You don’t get up in the morning and get in your car without knowing exactly what your destination is. That is what an End Game is all about; what exactly is your destination. You can’t run a company effectively, maximizing all opportunity without creating a long term plan. And, there is no such thing as a long term plan that will work without a defined End Game.
The Libya situation reminds me of what I often see in companies every day. It’s either a lack of serious long term planning or the lack of a defined End Game. |
