Customers that care
| |
| I visited the new Apple store in NYC on 14th Street yesterday. This one isn't as flashy as the one in midtown, and it has a fairly annoying design flaw. The two front doors don't close. Push them open, walk away and the door stays open. |

| I have long argued that the big, secret advantage that authentic businesses have over regular businesses is motivation. Not just the internal motivation of staff, but the motivation of customers and other stakeholders to support the business. |

Small Steps to Reduce Climate Change
| |
| We have all heard the publicity about global warming and the Greenhouse effect. Surprisingly some people still ask if this is belief or scepticism. We need to be clear on this. 99% of scientists consider global warming to be a scientific certainty. The only doubt is how much and how it will impact on our lives and our businesses.

Al Gores’ Approach to Work-Life Balance
| |
| In Al Gore’s documentary on global warming (An Inconvenient Truth), he makes reference to a picture used by the Bush administration to illustrate the conflict between money and environment. In the picture, there is a scale: on one side of the scale, there is a pile of gold bars, on the other the earth. As Al Gore somewhat wryly pointed out…gold is not much use to you if you have no earth.
I must say the same thought strikes me when I read about “work-life balance.” |

Entering 2008 Thriving not Just Enduring
| |
| Dear Jane,
What do you mean by “endurance” and what’s wrong with it? I always thought enduring was a good thing.
As we approach a new year, determined to make and keep our New Year’s resolutions (this time), I want to encourage you to resolve to thrive, not just endure. When I’m interviewed on radio or TV, I am always asked what the distinction is. I use an analogy taught to me by one of my mentors, Brandon St. John, some 25 years ago. When I saw it used in Al Gore’s, “An Inconvenient Truth,” I was both surprised and pleased. |

2.2.3 Training objectives: Contributory factors
| |
| Training policy objectives with respect to the poor are frequently poorly defined. Social exclusion is a complex theoretical concept referring to causal mechanisms producing poverty. Translating this concept into practical, poverty reduction policies has proved to be difficult in most countries (see Gore and Figueiredo, 1997).

The Lattice Organization - Unleashing Individual Freedom and Creativity
| |
| Most or our organizations are built on the hierarchy principle which seems on the surface to be an efficient and effective way to set things up. Why, then, do we end up frequently going around the formal organizational structures and processes to get things done?
Bill Gore, founder of the very successful Gortex Technologies organization recognized that the traditional hierarchical / authoritarian structure of organizations may not be the way to go, so he came up with the concept of “The Lattice Organization.”

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
| |
| The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." If we align the games with the real volume players, consumers we might stimulate more hardware, more bandwidth, more mobile, yes more software sales come the holidays.
