Lesson #3: Find What Works and Stick With It
| |
| Coca-Cola executives in the 1980s would have done well to follow in the example of its founder. In growing his company, Candler understood the importance of not messing with perfection. As an increasing number of copycat beverages found their way onto the market, Candler might have changed the shape of his bottle, or altered his marketing message, but he never once made the crucial error that his later successors would: after creating the perfect drink, he never again changed its secret recipe. Candler knew that in an increasingly competitive industry, it was important to stand out, and to keep customers on their toes, but he did not dare mess with what he saw as excellence. After all, if it was not broke, why fix it? |

Walt Disney Resort
| |
| In 1955, the first Walt Disney Resort opened in Anaheim, California. It was extremely popular, but despite its success, market research revealed that only two percent of visitors that came to the resort were from east of the Mississippi River. The Walt Disney Resort was failing to attract people from the region where three quarters of the American population actually lived. Founder Walt Disney was also unhappy with many of the businesses that had sprung up around Disneyland and wanted more control over a larger area of land. |

| |
| “I want everyone I can get,” says Klein. “Jews, Catholics, gays straights, you name it!” Klein has risen to the top of the fashion industry by creating products and advertising campaigns that appeal to the broadest cross-section of the population and herein lies part of his genius. By not limiting himself to a certain market and creating a wide range of product lines to accommodate all segments of society, Klein helped solidify his position at the top of the American fashion industry. |

2.0 The economic context: Support for Growth-oriented Women Entrepreneurs in Tanzania, 2005
| |
| Tanzania has a population of just over 37 million, a GDP of US$22 billion, and
GDP per capita of US$610.6 An estimated 51 per cent of the population lives below the
poverty line. Eighty per cent of the country’s poor population live in rural areas,
depending on subsistence agriculture and unable to participate in broader markets. Poor
roads, exorbitantly expensive utilities and prohibitive policies have compounded this
problem, significantly impeding the growth of the economy.7 Agriculture, the mainstay
of the economy, is almost 50 per cent of GDP, and small-scale peasant farmers, who
make up 70 per cent of the population, carry out over 80 per cent of agricultural
activities. About 30 per cent of the population over 15 years of age is illiterate (UDEC,
2002). |

1.0 Introduction: Microfinance in Africa - Experience and Lessons from Selected African Countries
| |
| Small enterprises and most of the poor population in sub-Saharan Africa have very limited
access to deposit and credit facilities and other financial services provided by formal
financial institutions. For example, in Ghana and Tanzania, only about 5–6 percent of the
population has access to the banking sector. This lack of access to financial services from the
formal financial system is quite striking, when one considers that in many African countries
the poor represent the largest share of the population and that the informal sector is an
important part of the economy. |

Proper Regulation Is Crucial to Ensure Welfare Gains

| The effects of privatisation on living conditions of the
population, and, in particular, on improved access and

policies on the welfare of the population and ultimately on
the poor requires: |

Report from the Field: Incorporating Microfinance into Kenya's Economic Recovery Strategy
| |
| With a population of 30 million people and a per capita income of US$260, Kenya is categorized the 20th poorest country in the world.[1] Estimates indicate that about 47% of the rural population and 29% of the urban population live under conditions of absolute poverty, where malnutrition and seasonal famine are not just a consistent fear, but also a frequent reality in their lives. On the other hand, the unemployment rate, currently estimated at between 25% and 35%, threatens to get out of hand as roughly 0.5 million school dropouts continue to join the ranks of the unemployed every year. |

Progressivism Isn't Progress, IV
| |
| The progressives have erected a formidable fortress in the American administrative state. With it, they may well achieve their Holy Grail objective - the collapse of the free market system, the eradication of prosperity, the "equalization" of everyone, and totalitarian government control of the population. We will cease completely to be the nation we were established to be (and the nation we've struggled to act like for decades). We'll still have a "one percent," but they'll be our government masters, not our entrepreneurial employers.... |
