Conversations for Effective Action
| |
| In your work, and in your life away from work, you participate in conversations. People speak, and people listen. And more is happening - promises are made, requests are made, invitations are issued, proposals for new projects are presented. Things happen in conversations. In fact, it is in conversations that people make things happen.
Only four things can happen in a conversation. We call these Basic Linguistic Commitments. The four linguistic commitments for action are requests, promises, assertions and declarations, and they happen in conversation, and this is all that’s happening.

Technology and the Growing Talent Crunch!
| |
| A debate of reasonable fury has been raging since the Bureau of Labor Statistics released their latest report on procurement sector job growth. The primary point of contention is the BLS’ assertion that the “overall employment for purchasing and supply managers is expected to grow slower than the average for all occupations through the year 2014.” Adding further fuel to the “sky is falling” fire that seems to be the theme of the majority of commentaries written on this issue, is BLS’ position that the “demand for purchasing workers will be eliminated by improving software.” |

What’s On the Minds of Leaders Today?
| |
| In today’s economic climate, executives are focused on regaining their post-recession footing, keeping employees engaged, and enhancing customer relationships. 3.0 Community action for decent work and social inclusion: Working Out of Poverty
| |
| Global and national strategies for poverty reduction should provide a
framework for local strategies to escape cycles of low incomes from work
and social exclusion. The ILO has considerable practical experience of community
actions that create more and better jobs for women and men living in
poverty and improve their chances of securing a life free from deprivation.
Much of this work is in developing countries, but these approaches have also
proved to be easily applicable in a number of transition and industrialized
market economies. |

Ten Tips For Becoming More Self Assertive
| |
| This month I had the pleasure of hearing Johanna Skouras speak at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. Self-Assertion is something I have struggled with myself. Johanna says that to learn to be self assertive we need to learn how to serve our own needs without hurting others. As an only child I had no need to be assertive in my family. My needs were always acknowledged and usually served. The difficulty came for me when I was with other people. I smiled when I picked up Johanna's book at the library and the librarian, a friend, said, "Oh Alvah, you don't need that book!" I'm still working on many of these tips. What about you?

HAVE WE LOST OUR MORAL COMPASS?
| |
| Would I be overstating it if I went out on a limb and made the bold assertion that we have lost our moral compass? And as a part of that observation say that we have been holding up the wrong people as our heroes and role models for far too long! And it only seems to be getting worse. As a population in North America we are losing our ability to discern the difference between right and wrong, fair or unfair, just or unjust and be willing to take a stand and declare ourselves. |

Personal Freedom: Do You Own Your Own Job, Or Does It Own You?
| |
| No matter what you "do for a living," you are in The Business Of You. You have cut a deal and are selling your precious labor resource for an agreed-upon price. How good a deal are you getting? About a decade ago, one of the big corporate catch-phrases was "the war for talent," and employers were in the position of having to pay top dollar to lure the best talent. These days, the scenario is very different: talk of a war for talent has been replaced with the old reliable assertion that "you're lucky to have a job." But you must not buy into this thinking! You have to find a way to own your own resource, to the greatest extent possible, and not get into a situation where your job owns you.

Liberalism Is A Dangerous Religion
| |
| I've heard it said that Liberalism - also known as Progressivism, and even as Socialism and Marxism - is a religion. This is an assertion at which liberals scoff. But what is a religion, really? If you look at the elements by which religion is popularly defined, the assertion that liberalism is a religion is pretty hard to refute.

10 Tips for Improving Staff Morale
| |
| It's often been said that employees leave managers, not companies. Research conducted by the Corporate Leadership Council (2003) provides support for this assertion. This study found that managers have a significant influence on a worker's level of commitment to their job. The study revealed that more than 70% of an employee's commitment is directly related to the interaction they have with their manager. If the manager/employee interactions are negative, low morale will often result. |

Business Makes, But Government Takes

| A "Demediacrat" said the other day that, if the government puts people to work digging a ditch and then filling it in again, it's not a bad thing. "At least they're productively employed," was the assertion.... |
