Last week I had the privilege of presenting Michael Phelps with the Male Athlete of the Year award. Along with former Olympian Don Schollander, I enjoyed reviewing some of the great moments of the Beijing Olympics. Of course, Phelps and his eight gold epic is one of the greatest achievements in the history of sport.

Probably not the consumer but is the balance tilting? I had the pleasure this month of attending the PLC Awards dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel. The categories of award included Best Performing Share, Best Performing Smaller Company Fund, and Company of the Year. Funnily enough there was no award for most cost effective fundraising/acquisition of the year; that's possibly not something that the City would wish to celebrate.

The athlete’s numbers are dissected and analyzed from all angles, usually in connection with a pool or a wager. Like athletes, sales professionals need to track their stats if they want to consistently outperform. How many at bats? Or better yet how many appointments did you have this year, and how is that versus last year? Is that number of appointments adequate to get you to your goal?
