The Shapes That Model Retail
There has been a tremendous amount of discussion by economists and government experts in regard to the type of recession we are in, as well as the possible ways we could come out of it. There are varied opinions and speculation as to where things go from here. This is pretty clearly demonstrated in the different models, or 'shapes', that the recovery might take, which have come to be characterized by various letters of the alphabet. Although Economists may track and analyze a number of economic issues and trends that would also impact retailers, it is from an aggregate level. So the question is, what will the economic recovery look like at a place where all the trends come together at once - such as in your own company’s financials?

In the Thrall of Procrastination
The last weeks of August are bittersweet for me as I say farewell to summer, my favourite season. I experience September as a month of new beginnings, likely harking back to my school years – but without the new erasers and pencil crayons. In this month’s newsletter I share some insights about to-do lists prompted by an impromptu closet makeover. I hope you enjoy the results of cleaning out your to-list and getting it ready for the ‘new year’ as much as I enjoyed cleaning out my closet.

The New Year Plan: Are you READY?
The New Year means different things to different people. For some, it inspires change for the better, for others it’s just another year, and the rest of us fall somewhere in between. For the inspired, great successes will ensue. For the pseudo-inspired, great intentions will ensue for about 30 days instead of 365. Nevertheless, they TRIED and that counts for something, right? Sometimes our resolution passion masks our tendency to procrastinate. When you couldn’t button your pants in May, hated your job in June, realized you’re missing important family time in July, smoked too much in August, drank too much in September, or recognized you were in an unfulfilling relationship in October…why are you waiting until January 1st to change?

Preserving the Dignity of Our Workforce
We Americans celebrate Labor Day each September as a reminder of how those who toil daily are important to their families and to the country. I might offer to you that the first Monday in September is also Employers’ Day, for without employers, there are no employees. We in the human resource profession find ourselves in a no-man’s land as both an advocate for our employees and an instrument of our employers. Guest Writer Richard Virgilio explains.
