4-Hour Case Studies: Can You Redesign a Life in 48 Hours?
This past Monday, I gave a presentation at SXSW Interactive in Austin, TX titled The 4-Hour Workweek: Secrets of Doing More with Less in a Digital World. It was my first public presentation on the principles in the book. It ended up standing room only and has caused some waves, being mentioned in the SF Chronicle, Wired, and other media since.

Will Salespeople Take a Straight Commission Job?
Last week I spoke at the Ritz-Carlton in Phoenix and at Barton Creek Country Club in Austin, TX. I don't recall whether it was Phoenix or Austin where I was asked this question but the question is a good one. Most who wrestle with this issue are asking the wrong question. The correct question should be, "How can I get good salespeople to work in a straight commission environment?"

Social Media: A Highly Effective Tool for Non-Profits
This article talks to those who operate a non-profit organization (or work with them). The topic is about Social Media and how to use it effectively to create a community to increase donations. Social Media is yet another tool that we can use as part of our overall marketing strategy.

PREPARE to Fund Your Technology Development
Finding funding for technology development can be a daunting process. Sources of funding, which include Federal Grants, State economic development funds, debt financing from investment banks, and equity funding from Angels or Venture Capital, will use some form of rating to determine your suitability for funding. This article presents a schema for evaluating a venture's "Funding Readiness Level (FRL) ®", which includes the market readiness of the technology or "Technology Readiness Level (TRL)", the maturity of the business or "Business Readiness Level (BRL)", and the ability of the venture to manage the deal process and negotiate in its own best interest or "Dealsmanship". (This article appears in the Jan/Feb 2006 issue of The Austin Business District magazine.)

Reorganize your life
I recently read about this study conducted by Nobel Prize recipient Daniel Kahneman. He believed we would all feel a lot better if we spent our time more wisely. He conducted a diary study with 909 women in Austin, Texas. He asked them to record all the activities they did during the day and then rate how happy they were while doing them. He then had them narrow the list to their least favorite activities. Unfortunately those activities accounted for nearly half of the participants' waking hours. Not surprisingly his advice was fairly simple. He said "Reorganize your life to be in situations that you'd rather continue than stop."

Can a Techie Ever Understand a Customer?
At the recent ProductCamp in Austin, I heard a well-respected researcher make the following comment: ‘Techies will never understand customers.' That's quite a statement. And it's false. I used to run a tech company. We employed 48 techies, so I guess I can qualify as knowing a bit how they think. As they began doing their work as project managers, programmers, and systems designers, I heard them frequently say: "Customers are stupid. They tell me what they want, and then when I give it to them they don't want it."

Why We Overtweet
This morning I’m participating in a panel at SXSW Interactive in Austin called Tweeting on the Weekends. The panelist and audience will attempt to address the idea that our digital worlds are overtaking our physical worlds and perhaps threatening to invade our lives in ways that cause more damage than good.
