Creating A Store That Sells Through Education and Entertainment
Ever been lost and confused in one of these shops where the product is either unfamiliar or fairly technical – like home electronics, mobile phones or medicines? I regularly see customers in these places (and I am often one of them) that are just going through the aisles looking bedazzled, faced with rows of identically looking objects with some technical jargon words written on labels... Simply putting stock on shelves and hoping that customers will buy it does not work, a different approach is required.

Garber on Business: Business dinner? Don't whine about wine
No longer does the haughty sommelier at Le Cavalier Réstaurant Français glare down his well-trained nose and impatiently finger his goûte-vin as he debates how to intimidate you into buying a more expensive wine -- that is, ahem, to persuade Monsieur to make a better choice. No longer must you fumble through a 28-page wine list, searching for a name you recognize -- any name you recognize, in order to breathe a sigh of relief.

High Price Raises Perception of Quality
In an article in the January 2008 Economist magazine, a study was cited that was done by Dr. Antonio Rangel of the California Institute of Technology. Rangel found that if people are told a wine that they are tasting is expensive, the perception in their brain evolves to increase the quality of the wine they had consumed based on nothing other than higher price meaning a higher quality.

The Wine Giant: How Ernest Gallo Got His Start
Ernest Gallo was not your typical billionaire. Up until the day he died, he insisted on keeping his home number listed in the public phone book; he wanted everyone to be able to find him. But it is exactly traits like that which continue to make this winemaker stand out. Today, the business he started with his brother back in 1933 with just $6,000 in capital remains the leading exporter of California wine, producing some 2.64 million bottles of wine every day.

Lesson #3: Be Ruthless and Rise to the Challenge
“You make the wine and I’ll sell it,” Gallo once told his younger brother. Gallo never wanted to be involved in the fine details of making fine wine. What Gallo wanted was to get out on the sales floor, to hit the streets, and to sell his stuff. He became known as a ruthless businessman for one reason; he was good at what he did and he did not let anything stand in his way. Gallo always got what he wanted because he was never willing to settle for anything less.

Lesson #5: Position Your Business to Become an Industry Leader
Gallo did not just help put California’s wine industry on the map; he helped establish the modern U.S. wine market as a whole once prohibition came to an end. Aside from the personality characteristics and work ethic that helped Gallo succeed as an entrepreneur, it was largely his strategic decisions on how to gain industry dominance in all aspects of his operations that transformed E&J Gallo Winery from a two-man operation into an international success story.

Video – the Next Wave of Small Business Marketing?
The current small business marketing trend is the addition of video to things like websites, promotional DVDs and blogs. Think of the explosion of You Tube – more people watch You Tube across the world each day than people watch TV. The cutting edge of the trend is live self-broadcast TV streamed from your website. Think of it like your own ongoing TV program. One of the gurus in this is a guy who talks about wine – Gary Vaynerchuck. A guy who is passionate about wine talks about it in laypersons terms – complete with plastic character toys. It is out there, loud, real and he out-rates many of the top US TV shows.

Creative Recruiting and Other Social Media Ideas
Who else has been following the Murphy-Goode Winery contest? Today they’re announcing the winner of their six-month “Wine Country Lifestyle Correspondent” dream job. The campaign is a terrific example of how social media marketing can generate tremendous buzz, brand loyalty, and publicity – and even some controversy. (Let me know on the blog if you’re a fan of the campaign – or the wine.)

Women in business
I was speaking to someone from overseas the other day and he said he never thought he would see the day when Australia elected a female Prime Minister. His perception of Australia was that our culture was very ‘blokey’. So you would think that the appointment of Prime Minister Julia Gillard was the result of great change, an indication of how successful women have become in the workforce. Think again. In the recently published report by the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency it made clear that the number of female key executive managers and board directors in the ASX 200 has hardly changed over the past eight years. In comparison with New Zealand, the UK, Canada, the US and South Africa, Australia has the lowest percentage of women in the most senior positions. So what exactly is going on?
