On my own
| |
| I know from prior education that the experience of being 'on my own' kicks into gear a automatic strategy I invented ages ago for surviving the experience; for me, it is to get serious and determined...to work really hard and forge on through. This strategy is bankrupt however, and will leave me laboring harder vs working smarter.

How Obama, Dan Pink, The Heaths, Steinbrenner and Kurlan Might Prepare Your Sales Force for Change
| |
| I was up against the time, as 6:30 AM had arrived prior to the end of my article. That's how it was yesterday when I wrote about having a change ready sales force. The only problem with yesterday's article was that I never really got to the part about being change ready! So to start where we left off you'll need to read Part I first.
How do we prepare the sales force for the four possible outcomes while letting them know that options 2-4 are not acceptable?
There are several possible approaches and Alex Bartholomaus, who spoke with me yesterday, said he would like to see me talk about these two:

Preparing for the upturn - Retaining and attracting the best skills in the market.
| |
| With the first signs of economic recovery upon us employers need to be prepared for the upturn, they need to focus on retaining skills and keep employees engaged in their work, if voluntary turnover increases after an economic downturn, then companies have to bear the costs to recruit, train, and attract new employees to replace those who have left. Replacing lost employees quickly becomes expensive. Not only does turnover have financial implications, it also impacts workplace performance. However this is just the tip of the iceberg as customer relationships are impacted, knowledge is lost and often other employees have to pick up the slack, causing increased levels of stress among the remaining workforce. |

Break The Rules - Think, And Be Adaptive
| |
| Organizations and their leadership must be prepared to throw away their insecurities and embrace new unconventional thinking. They must do this to deal more effectively with situations, which are complex, ever-changing, and for the most part uncontrollable. Mark McCormack states it very nicely in his book What They Don’t Teach You At Harvard Business School, when he says, “Have you noticed that the best-run companies all seem to be managed unconventionally?” He goes on to state, “Their success is attributed to breaking the rules, not following them. |

BOOK REVIEW: Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us (By Daniel H. Pink, Riverhead Books, 2009, ISBN# 978-1-59448-884-9)
| |
| In his new book Dan Pink (1) consolidates some major social science research around human motivation into clear, straightforward discoveries and (2) challenges the current thinking and practice in the vast majority of our organizations.
Employees in the more complex, knowledge-based jobs of the emerging post modern economy do not respond well to "carrot & stick" forms of motivation (Pink refers to this as "Motivation 2.0"). Rather, they are propelled to deliver superior performance by three principal motivators: Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose. ("Motivation 3.0"). |

The Toxic Manager
| |
| Most managers are not comfortable with a simple truism that the current condition of any organization is direct reflection of leadership. In other words, managers are accountable for the current success or failure of the team. This epiphany is a rude awakening for some and a sad reality for others. The challenge faced by most aspiring leaders is the brutal accountability that accompanies autonomy. In other words, team performance is directly related to "who" is on the team and "how" they are managed. The wrong people certainly influence performance and this quantification of talent is the primary measure of success and failure. |
