Lesson #4: Network to Bring Others Into the Know
By the end of World War II, L.L. Bean products were being found in the homes of everyone from Calvin Coolidge and Franklin Roosevelt to Doris Day, Babe Ruth, and the Aga Khan. Even John Wayne took off his country western getup to wear something a la L.L. Bean every now and then. But, was this just coincidence? Or was it part of a larger strategy on Bean’s part to grow his business by networking and creating word of mouth?

Sales Coaching is Like Baseball - How Do You Rate?
Really? Whiffle Ball in the back yard? Sandlot? Little League? Babe Ruth? High School? American Legion? College? Cape Cod League? Independent League? First Round Draft Pick? Signed by a Major League Team? High Minors? Cup of Coffee in the Bigs? Utility Player on a Major League Team? Every Day Player? All Star? MVP? Hall of Fame? When it comes to coaching, most sales managers have done the baseball equivilent of Sandlot - they messed around at it and had some fun.

May I Quote You?
As an author, the question, “May I quote you?” is a humbling request and a great compliment. For anyone who is in search of excellence a good quote is fuel for our journey. It’s amazing how a short, simple quotation can quickly provide perspective, inspiration, comfort, motivation or insight. What a wonderful return for our invested time - take 10 seconds each morning to read a new quote and our day, maybe even our world, is changed. I wanted to share a few of my favorites which can also be found in the new coffee table gift book, The Nature of Excellence… “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” - Babe Ruth

What is Failure Anyway?
Does it surprise you that only 400 cokes were sold the first year; Albert Einstein's Ph.D. dissertation was rejected; Henry Ford had two bankruptcies before his famous success; or Ulysses S. Grant was working as a handyman, written off as a failure, eight years before becoming President of the United States?

Referral TIP
Ruth Forbes asked me "For the e-mail referrals, do you have, up your sleeve, a GREAT (motivating) letter to clients? I would like to get to those clients who have yet to give me referrals."

Have You Appreciated Someone Today? One Powerful Secret for Team Motivation
I invested some time with Mother recently and drove her to the hospital to visit with her sick sister-in-law, my aunt. While I was standing in the doorway, a nurse came by and introduced herself as Ruth and said “hello” to us and said “hello” to my aunt. This put a smile on my aunt’s face. The nurse then introduced me to the other nurses working at the nurses’ station. She let me know that these nurses are hard working and good at their jobs.

6 Ways To Win In the Game of Life
Most winners are built through brokenness. The greatest leaders have failed many times. Before inventing the light bulb, Thomas Edison failed a thousand times. Babe Ruth had 714 home runs and 1,330 strikeouts. Abraham Lincoln was said to have failed so many times, in business, in his love life, in politics but finally became one of the greatest President of the United States. Allow failure to be your friend.

Successful People Know When and How to Break the Rules
Successful people create and nurture their unique personal brands. Good personal brands highlight focus on the uniqueness of the person who created them. One way of doing this is to break a few rules. By breaking the rules, I don't mean doing something illegal or unethical. I mean thinking outside of the box and not being constrained by conventional wisdom. As Kevin Coupe and Michael Sansolo point out in their great book The Big Picture, in the movie Babe, Babe the pig succeeds because he doesn't act like a pig. He is friendly and mannerly -- characteristics not usually associated with pigs. Tamba Mbawa broke the rules in building his personal training brand. He placed his business card inside all of the fitness books in a local Barnes and Noble. What rules are holding you back from building a great personal brand? How can you break them

From Sharecropper's Daughter to College President
My mother used to say, "As the twig is bent, the tree shall grow." I believe that Ruth Simmons, once president of the highly-prestigious Smith College in Massachusetts, is the classic example of the truth of that statement. She is currently serving as President of Brown University. She is also the epitome of the American Dream and living proof that it is still alive and well in America.

Boots, High Heels, Tennies, or Sandals? Come Watch the People Zoo
When was the last time you went to the zoo? The shopping mall can be JUST as adventurous! As interesting as all the animals are, my daughter, when three, told me while we were sitting on a shopping mall bench "This is as fun as the animal zoo, Mama". People have been watching people since the beginning of time. Why would someone pierce their tongue and eyebrow and wear hiking boots in the middle of shopping? Why wear striped shorts with a plaid shirt with sandals and socks? Why can you hear that one person laughing way above the noise of the entire mall and find them in high heels and "lookin' good babe"? And then there's those who have their cozy sweat pants on and "tennies". Who are these people and what makes them tick? With all the 22 companies out there with personality profiles, I have found after 30 years of sales experience

What is True?
Credentialed Professional Certified Coach through The International Coach Federation and Certified Life/Career Coach Peter Pamela Rose feels very strongly about the Truth. There are two kinds, she says. There’s ‘T’ruth with a capital “T” and ‘t’ruth with a little “t”.
