Hints on managing an ageing multicultural workorce
Research has confirmed the commonly held belief that as people age their ability (and often their desire) to change is diminished and that their thoughts, habits, patterns of behaviour, ideas and perceptions become rigid and limited and that it becomes more difficult for them to change in response to events (‘plasticity’ of the brain is reduced).

Selling In A Gloomy Economy
What is the difference between selling in a robust economy and selling in a failing economy? A lot. But not what you think. * Your product is the same * Your pitch/presentation is the same * The buyer’s need is the same What’s different is the decision making process the buyers need to go through. Do they have a problem that needs to be resolved now, and the economy has mitigated the types of solutions they seek? Do they have a problem that can be fixed with a partial, cheaper solution, or with internal resources that can be modified to create a solution? Do they wait until…. until they have some belief that their business won’t be at risk?

Lesson #4: Give People More Than Their Money’s Worth
Much like the hoaxes for which he became famous, so too was the widely held belief that Barnum was the first to ever say, “There’s a sucker born every minute.”. He never did say those words. In fact, quite the opposite was true. More than any of his competitors, Barnum believed in giving his customers more their money’s worth. It was for this reason that people stayed loyal to him, keeping his business afloat when others were sinking around him.

Pulling The Right Strings: How Henson Achieved Success
“When I was a kid, I never saw a puppet show,” Henson recalled. “I never played with puppets or had any interest in them.” It is with thankfulness from children around the world that Henson’s interests changed over time. Such familiar characters as Kermit the Frog, Ernie, Rowlf the dog, and Miss Piggy have since become ingrained in the national psyche. Henson revolutionized the worlds of children’s television and puppeteering and had a blast along the way. How did he do it?

Lesson #4: Work Together

Lesson #3: Make Your Product As Personal As Possible
Jenny Craig’s success did not lie just in the fact that the program combined athletic activity with its own prepared foods. Craig had a secret that kept customers coming back for more. If all her years in the industry had taught her one thing, it was this: the road to weight loss was a difficult one and people needed all the support they could get along the way. To that end, Craig made it her number one priority to engage her clients, making the program as interactive and supportive as possible to keep them motivated and paying!

Lesson #4: Fight To Find Your Place In The Field
“A lot of the times when adult stars try to be a CEO of their own company nobody takes you seriously or thinks you know what you're talking about,” says Jameson. “They talk down to you and act like you don't have a clue.”

Lesson #3: Focus On the Inside Out
“I believe that Yahoo! is too often defined by the competitive landscape, rather than by what we can accomplish with our assets,” says Yang. “I’m determined for us to define our own path.”

Tuning into Tastes: The Secret of Jones Soda’s Success
“If you’re able to listen to customers from their perspective, not everything they say will make sense,” says van Stolk. “Not everything they do will be right. But you’ll know more about what you have to do because of it.”

Awakening The Entrepreneur Within You
There is a commonly held belief that one becomes an entrepreneur by going into business, or going out on one’s own. I don’t subscribe to that belief.

What You SAY is What You Get - How to Speak Your Way to Success

The definition of branding
One of my readers pointed out that they really appreciated the definition of marketing that I use throughout Duct Tape Marketing. Marketing is getting someone who has a need to know, like and trust you. Most small business folks, exposed only to more academic definitions, really seem to appreciate the truthfulness of that characterization. This same reader (Eddy) also asked then for my definition of branding (as it might relate to marketing)

Making your customers uncomfortable
Tomorrow is the ridiculous Black Friday ritual, gaining in steam every year, in which large American retailers run big sales that start at 6 am. People line up even earlier to get in first. Kids are stampeded. Muscles are pulled. Friendships frayed. Credit cards exhausted.

Happy Ears or an Empty Pipeline?
Very often, when an opportunity dies, salespeople will ask their managers or me for help. The salesperson either...

Is an Online Business a Real Business?
I suspect that far too many people fall into the trap of thinking that an online business is easier to start and run than an offline business. It is possible that an online business could require less money up front to start but I’m not convinced less work is an option – unless you have that so-called “magic selling” product. Most people starting out with an online business probably do not fully understand what they are getting involved with. They understand the internet,

Shame is the Secret Saboteur of Success
Shame is the painful belief that a person is defective by their very existence, and is the secret weapon of sabotage against personal success. Essentially, shamed is a response that results from our parents and teachers helping us learn how to be a part of society, which we very early on tend to absorb into our energy bodies at a core level. Over time, people affected by shame make compromised decisions from a diminished view of themselves which affects their productivity, relationships and overall life wealth.

Sales Management Training Tips: Pursuing Sales Results vs. Developing Your Team
I recently had lunch with a highly successful VP of Sales of a Pharmaceutical company. He explained that he was frustrated with the members of his sales management team, who he felt were focused only on results. He worried that they were not spending any time developing their salespeople. At first blush, most of you might easily say you don’t see a problem with that. You wish your sales managers were more focused on delivering the sales numbers. That’s easily understood and probably true in many cases.

Following a recent comment on my blog, I promised to suggest some good icebreakers to start conversations at networking events. Work At Home Trumps Having A Job Every Time
Work at home is a growing trend among people who want to create and control their own income. Work at home trumps having a job every time. A job is defined by the employer. You are hired because you have the skill sets that match the scope of the tasks needed for the job. You will always be limited by what the employer needs to move his company forward. It does not matter how good you are at your job, you will never exceed the expectations of the employer. It is possible to be rewarded for exceptional work with a promotion and higher pay. The opportunities for advancement are limited and the competition can be fierce. No matter how high you climb the corporate ladder you will never reach the top. You can turn that around when you become the owner of your own home based business and are committed to work at home.

One of my favorite quotes is To go where you have never been before demands that you do what you have never done before. Accepting and Embracing All of Yourself
Close your eyes and become aware of your breath as you inhale and exhale. Allow your breath to take you to a silent place in the core of your being where you feel centered and present-focused. CANADA IS A COUNTRY OF MEDIOCRITY
Having been closely watching the American presidential race with a great deal of interest, and have to say being fascinated even enthralled by a number of the speeches, I recalled having read an article in the newspaper last year quoting a study or report that concluded Canada was a “country of mediocrity.” It stated that we are not particularly innovative, creative or willing to step up and take risks to move our society forward and become more of a leader in the world. Just what is really being talked about here?

Is Experience The Best Teacher?
It’s interesting to consider the wisdom of some expressions in common use these days. How about the phrase “Experience is the best teacher?” Or how about this gem, “What you don’t know won’t hurt you?” And what about, “He or she is a born sales person” or “Ignorance is bliss”? As I work these days with sales people and sales managers across Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia I see so many examples of why beliefs like these are so dangerous.Experience is not the best teacher

Leadership Characteristics – Managing With Feeling
Many business owners feel that they need to have “hard” leadership characteristics in order to get ahead or be successful. They believe that if they show any weakness or flexibility, that staff will “pounce” and take advantage of them. When you look inside their companies, you see unhappy people (both managers and staff), all tightly hanging onto what is right in their view and making sure they get what they are entitled to.

In Praise of Passion: Selling’s Secret Weapon
The stereotype many people have of salespeople is of an amoral hired gun. A sharp-suited, sharp-talking huckster who doesn’t care what he’s peddling as long as it brings in the money. But in reality, the opposite is true of all truly successful salespeople: they have a real passion and belief in the products and services they sell. This article explores the importance of passion - and how to incubate it in your sales team.

It's Up To YOU To Get Yourself Out of Funk
A few years back, my relationship was not looking much healthier than the insane one that came before it. He had some issues that were clearly not designed to empower a committed relationship. He needed to do something about those issues or I was going to jump ship. Well, he wouldn’t. So I did something about it and didn’t jump ship.

STOP! Don't Take Action
Yes, it’s true. I seem to attract clients with issues similar to those I’ve experienced in the past or am experiencing to some degree now. It’s a great mirror and provides me with much insight. The issue I’ve been noticing over and over this last year is addiction to action. And believe me, it’s an addiction.

Billionaire Mentality
I know, for a fact, that you want to increase your wealth and relationship with money. You wouldn't have read Robert Kiyosaki's books or contacted me if that weren't true. So, here's the question: Are you ready to allow the constant flow of money and prosperity into your life? All it takes is a decision and belief.

The Myth of the Adult

How Playfulness Attracts Wealth-Yes, It's True!
As a Law of Attraction student and practitioner, you know that the better your feelings are, the easier you will attract what you clearly ask for. I would like to talk about the quality and feelings of playfulness. Are you aware that playfulness can make you even more prosperous? Most of us have been brought up with a strong work ethic. Often this work ethic has a serious tone to it. “If I work hard, then I’ll be wealthy.” “If I work longer hours, then I’ll deserve to be prosperous.” Even though we may not say that consciously, deep down, that is what many of us believe. We are brought up to feel that the only way to be wealthy and abundant is if we work very hard and make numerous sacrifices along the way. Otherwise we don’t deserve it-and it won’t happen. But that's not exactly true...

LEADERSHIP REQUIRES EXCELLENCE, NOT PERFECTION
In your personal and professional life, this message should serve as a cornerstone to your core values. The tendency of most who are striving for a goal is the belief that perfection must line the pathway in order to embrace success. In reality, the opposite is true. Goal setting is a path lined with challenges. If you do not expect to encounter these along your way, then you need to seriously evaluate the value of the goal being pursued. While worthwhile goals are always met with challenges, it's the challenges that make the goals worthwhile.

What’s Complaining Really About?

Lessons to learn from the book Good to Great
While the companies in the book Good to Great are large publicly owned corporations I believe that many of its lessons can be applied to small, privately owned businesses. I regularly recommend it as essential reading to our clients, who are all small business entrepreneurs. Here are some of the lessons to be learnt from Good to Great.

Ladies, Are You Hitting An Entrepreneurial Wall?
It doesn’t take much to figure out that something is limiting what you want to happen in your business. However, it may come as a surprise to learn that it just might be your own limiting belief that’s keeping the wall in front of you. Let me clarify that you are not the problem! It’s what you believe that could be to blame.

WHY WE DO NOT ACHIEVE OUR GOALS
Psychologists consider that it is unrealistic expectations of the ease with which the goals can be attained, which lead to failure. We fail because we do not prepare for personal change. There is no good fairy that will come to you in the night and transform your body for you. The successful see failure as a source of lessons for them; it teaches them valuable lessons as to what needs to be altered in order to achieve the goal.

The True Measure of Abundance: An Extraordinary Life
One of my clients used the expression, “earning a living,” and it struck me that this phrasing is so painfully close to saying “earning a life.” If we equate earning money with earning the right to live, we are likely to find ourselves in what I call Endurance (yes, with a capital E).

How to Make Your Cold Calling Problem-Focused
We rarely think about our prospect’s problems when we cold call. It’s just easier to focus on our product or service. Naturally, it’s really tempting to make cold calling all about us and what we have to offer, rather than about the other person.

Exploring the Sharing of Three Words
“I am sorry.” There are so many lessons to be learned about how to say these simple and very powerful words.

Low Cost Web Hosting
As entrepreneurs, we all have to be wary of our bottom line. By and large, I am of the belief that it’s never smart to spend more than you’re bringing in. That being said, however, there comes a time, especially during our startup days, when it’s time to take a risk, to spend a little extra money in the hopes that it will bring you a bigger return. Here, especially, I am talking about low cost web hosting.

Manage Your Business from the Rockies, not the Prairies

Are You Using Your Greatest Potential?
Your greatest potential is tied to your greatest talents and desires. Grasping this one concept could be the key to opening a huge door of unlimited possibilities and opportunities for you.

Domain Web Hosting
Many people think that finding a reliable and secure domain web hosting company is the most important part of starting up a website. While that is certainly an important part of it, I’m of the belief that designing your site with an eye to the viewer is of more value. After all, what good is a website that is up and running and has enormous bandwidth capacity if nobody wants to visit your site in the first place?

Feeling Ignored
Dear Jane, I get lost in a crowd, like I’m invisible. I pretend not to care and I know I make things worse by dressing in drab clothes. But I feel like I don’t matter to anyone. What can I do short of screaming, “Here I am! Pay attention to me!” Being ignored—not feeling special or valued—is one of the most hurtful experiences to endure. Unless we’re so Britney Spears-like famous that we lose all privacy, I think all of us have felt invisible and ignored. Given that the way you dress reinforces your pain, it’s likely that you have an old belief that you are unimportant.

What Is A Life Coach
Dear Jane, What is a life coach and how do I know if I need one? What I do as a life coach is help my clients recognize and let go of the sabotaging thoughts and behaviors that have undermined their success, joy, and intimacy. We all have sabotaging thoughts and behaviors; sometimes it takes someone else to help us see them and to believe in us more than we believe in ourselves. So I’m also an energetic cheerleader and true believer. I will often see the possibilities for a client’s future before he or she can. My job is to inspire each person I work with to create an extraordinary vision and to become adept with the tools to create that vision.

For Entrepreneurs fearing Vacation, this works like crazy…
As an Entrepreneur, have you ever put off taking vacation? Are you afraid of losing new clients? Are you afraid of losing revenue? Even if you did take vacation, do you feel guilty? When I first, transitioned from an Employee to an Entrepreneur, my answer to all these questions were "YES". It took a couple of years to understand my emotions and change my mindset. I would make time to accommodate a guest or relatives visiting us, despite my busy schedule of running my home chores and business. When it came to taking a vacation, I felt that only if I had a JOB, I can have the luxury of taking a PAID vacation provided by an employer. In other words, I felt that I never had "permission" to take vacation.

The Magic of Thinking Big: Developing the Power of Belief
I recently re-read a book that I read many years ago. It was a great reminder of the power of the mind. It’s like I tell the people that I coach, “If you think you are a winner you’re probably right. If you think you are a loser, you’re probably right.” The Magic of Thinking Big is a great book that will help you recognize that you’re thoughts and belief in yourself are the aspects that are propelling you forward or holding you back. Knowing this is probably nothing new to you however the tough part is to learn how to develop the power of belief. Schwartz suggests three ways to develop belief:

4 Ways of Defining Belief
By definition, belief refers to a psychological state in which a person holds to a premise, or an idea, that he or she discerns to be true. Belief is similar to knowledge, but differentiated by a level of stronger confidence and perhaps even of faith. One of Plato’s early works defined knowledge as a person’s “justified true belief”, and this understanding has continued through the ages. Simply put, you could say that belief is knowledge that has been proven true according to reason, plausibility, and evidence. Of course, one could argue that belief and knowledge are relative to the perception of one individual. This is a moot point though, because whatever a person wants to believe will be their reality - regardless if it is true or not.

Defining Belief
Psychology, as well as other practices relating to human mentality, has long held that belief is the most basic form of conscious thought. The issue of whether belief is actually a mental state remains the subject of debate. Nevertheless, in psychology, before a subject can learn any new information, the belief system must first be addressed. This allows the "proposition", or the object of the belief, to be learned.

Belief Systems and Results
We all carry belief systems that may lead to success and or throw us off course. Many times behavioral weaknesses that are obvious to others (but not to ourselves) are the results of these belief systems.

The Charismatic Mindset
Charismatic people possess a mindset of empowering beliefs that build and develop their personal magnetism. As you read through this list of beliefs, take time to consider each in turn. To what extent is each of these beliefs already part of your personal belief system? If you feel resistance to one of these statements, spend some time to imagine how you would feel, think and act if you made that belief your own. Notice how it might empower you, push you to take more responsibility, or make you stronger and more assertive. Think of something you could now do that perhaps you would not have dared to do without that new belief. Try it out. Have fun! Grow some charisma within you!
