Hire People with Organizational Grit!
| |
| “Reasonable people adapt themselves to the world. Unreasonable people attempt to adapt the world to themselves. All progress, therefore, depends on unreasonable people” - so said the famous Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. For organizations seeking progress and change there seem to be too many reasonable people about! |

Looking For The Real You
| |
| It is this thought or the fear of the answer that keeps people in the dark about themselves or their potential. They seem to get in a rut in life and they just accept it, never realizing that there just could be a better way, if only they expected more of themselves. They get in a "Good Enough" mentality that only encourages mediocrity. We could change the quality of our lives today....right now, if only we'd follow a few simple guidelines:

Infinite Possibilities
| |
| Opportuities are in front of us and we are held back from grasping them because we don't see them. When we close our eyes to infinite possibilities others take advantage of them and leave us to wonder why success eludes us. Be aware, look around, dream the impossible and then make it happen. |

Who’s really to blame when your employees fail to perform?
| |
| Human beings are funny. When placed in a position where they are expected to perform in a certain way – like an office – most people will do exactly what is expected and not much more. If expectations are low, they tend to do less. But when expectations are high, those same people will to rise to the occasion.
Applied to today’s managers, we see this effect play out time and again in organizations large and small: A manager who expects little of his or her employees also clearly thinks little of them. As a result, employees give little in return. On the other hand, managers who expect a lot of their employees tend to treat their employees better and, in return, get better performance. |

Communications Tips
| |
| "The Greatest problem in communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished."
George Bernard Shaw
The great quote by George Bernard Shaw confirms what I have experienced in my 35 plus year career. And in my past 23 years in my own business, I cannot think of a single instance where "communication" was not listed as a problem, challenge, frustration, irritant, etc. in the focus groups, discussion groups and other strategic planning endeavors I have conducted. Communication is a challenge. And it is an opportunity for very positive impressions if one works at doing it effectively. |

The Creation of an Objection
| |
| “You attract to you the predominant thoughts that you’re holding in your awareness, whether those thoughts are conscious or unconscious.” Michael Bernard Beckwith
Before attempting to handle any type of objection, it’s important to begin by looking at the beliefs that sales people are holding in their minds. If they are focusing on what objections they believe they will encounter, they will unconsciously transmit these thoughts to their prospects.

My call: Snow Leopard by July, quad-core iMacs by October
| |
| Kaufman Brothers analyst Shaw Wu thinks Mac OS X 10.6 (“Snow Leopard”) may not arrive until late summer or early fall. I think the beast will begin prowling in the June-July time period. However, I agree withe Wu that we’ll see a quad-core iMac before year’s end that will capitalize on Snow Leopard’s beefed up support for multiple core processors.

Assumptions Are Conversation Killers
| |
| Assumptions can really derail a conversation. Don't make assumptions about the other person when you are in conversation. If you find you are making assumptions, test them out. Ask, "Why do you thing that is so?" Remember, in many cases you really don't know what the other person is thinking or feeling. To quote Bernard Shaw, "You think you do; but you don't." |

Business Plans: Uses and Abuses
| |
| “Some men see things as they are and say "Why?". I dream of things that never were and say "Why not?" (George Bernard Shaw)
Do you ever dream about business success and wonder how to make it happen? We all have aspirational dreams and goals but how many of us know how to turn them into reality.
Many of you will have thought about writing business plans to make your dreams come true and been put off, thinking them either too hard to write, not necessary, or feeling that they are not really needed as the plans are already in your head. In fact it is important that you create plans, as they provide focus and a pathway for you to follow to achieve your business goals.
In principle plans are not that difficult to write, providing some fundamentals are clearly identified and followed before you start the process.

Talent, Communication, and the BP Oil Spill
| |
| Tony Hayward, CEO of BP, has had a pretty rough couple of weeks. His response to the grilling by congress and his handling of communications surrounding the Gulf of Mexico oil situation was tone deaf to say the least – at least to US ears. And yet Tony is obviously a very talented guy. After all you don’t get to be CEO of BP by being a slouch.
So what went went wrong? One of the hypotheses that have been circulating in the media is that there is a culture difference between the UK and USA on the use of language. As remarked by the playwright George Bernard Shaw, “England and America are two countries separated by the same language”.

Thermometer Manager or Thermostat Leader?
| |
| The late 19th century Irish playwright, critic, and social reformer, George Bernard Shaw, had a lot of useful things to say about personal effectiveness. A few of his comments have hung on my mirror or been posted in my day planner over the years. This one speaks to a core management-leadership choice we all have; "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends upon the unreasonable man." |
