Ready to Wear: Lauren Launches His Line

Lauren’s handmade neckties were flying off the shelves. It was a conservative time in the fashion world and Lauren’s ties, showy as they were, were making a splash. But Lauren knew that if he was going to stick around in the business for much longer, he had to follow that up with something else – and fast. In 1968, with the help of a $50,000 loan, Lauren founded Polo Fashions. He chose the name not because he liked the sport; indeed, he had never played polo before in his life. But to Lauren, the name symbolized power and style – an image he wanted his clothes to project.

Why Does this Successful Internet Marketing Business Bear Such an Unusual Name?

My business, Cattle On 1000 Hills, bears a peculiar name since I do not sell land or cattle. Psalm 50:10 states: For every beast of the forest is Mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. God will never need our money but He desires our obedience. Upon discovering this fantastic home based Internet marketing business, I believed its name should be equally unusual. I wanted the name to point to the fact that God owns all we think is ours, all the material "stuff" we accumulate during our lives. We believe all that stuff makes us wealthy but as the old adage says: You can't take it with you.

Off the Books and Underground

Some years ago while taking a walking tour in downtown Los Angeles, the tour guide waved his hand at a commercial strip on Broadway and said something that stayed in my mind. “More cash changes hands every Saturday on this street than in Beverly Hills” was his observation. Notice he said cash and not higher gross sales. There is an unmeasured segment of the small business community that seems to be growing, especially in urban areas. It is a world where cash is not just King, but the entire royal court! Politicians and regulators need to absorb the lessons coming from the off-the-books economy.
