Social Networking -- How Your Social Networking Habits Determines Your Business Success or Failure
It occurred to me as I look around and see what people are and aren't doing with their social networking that this is actually a microcosm of your entire business. So how do you approach your social networking and what does it say about the rest of your business?

Lesson #2: Develop a Customer-Focused Philosophy
“Let’s say you decide to buy a car – red, two-door,” says Dell. “All sold out – four months to get one – but a really convincing salesperson talks you into the blue, four-door and probably the rust-proofing too. The salesperson gets a nice commission, when she actually sold you a car you didn’t want. Then, the dealer sends a signal back to the factory that blue four-doors are selling really well – build some more!” Contrary to this, Dell’s philosophy is that, “We’ll listen, and we’ll respond…It’s about the customer. It’s that simple.”

The Semantic Web Can Be Your Friend
Alex Iskold, the founder and creator of Adaptive Blue, has a long and helpful post up titled Semantic Web: Difficulties with the Classic Approach. I have a small investment in Adaptive Blue (Union Square Ventures is the lead investor), love what Alex is up to, and relish anything that comes out of his brain.

Consulting Code Blue
Management consulting skills (or the lack of them) make the difference between the success and failure of a consultant. Poor skills usually result in the consultant not being asked back, or worse, being dismissed. Such dismissal is the consulting equivalent of heart failure. In many hospitals, they would call such a failure a "code blue". I use the term "code blue" to describe the situation of consultants who are quite talented but find themselves out the door and on the outs.

The Ariba Interviews: Re-engineering the Future of On-Demand?
Earlier this month I was contacted by Ariba’s PR firm indicating that they wanted to schedule an interview between myself and a senior executive from the company. The purpose for the interview was to discuss Ariba’s latest contract win in the Healthcare sector. For those of you who may not already be aware, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey will be, and I quote “leveraging Ariba’s on-demand Procure-to-Pay offering to drive savings, efficiencies and competitive advantage.” (Note: here is a link to the actual press release; http://www.ariba.com/company/news.cfm?pressid=2672).

120 Billion Reasons to Sell the Yen
Last year, one of the few financial instruments that was headed to the moon was the Japanese Yen. Since then, things in Japan have started to unravel. GDP has declined and exporters are suffering. Shorting the Yen vs the US dollar will prove to be profitable during 2009.

Together We Can
After the events of September 11th, we saw individuals throughout the United States and the world come together as one - red, white, and blue. The differences in our personalities, race, gender, nationality, religious beliefs, etc. still existed but our very diversity became a way to show the terrorists that we are all different in many ways but still unite as one - red, white, and blue! Wouldn't it be nice if we could harness that same energy in our companies so that we worked together as one (but without the tragedy)? You can!!!

Are You Doing the Moon Walk --- Going Backwards While Moving Forward
The death of Michael Jackson recently was a tragic event. No matter what you thought of Michael personally, there is no doubt that he was one of the most talented entertainers of all time. His singing and dancing talent showcased so effectively by his performance in the video and album “Thriller” will be remembered forever as the Capstone of his career. I, like millions of his fans, mourn his passing. However, the one thing that I remember the most is his invention of the “Moonwalk”. The “Moon Walk” is a dance move that looks as if you are going forward when in reality you are moving backward. Michael made that move famous. His tragic sorrowful death reminded me of that move. The Moon Walk itself brings to mind how many businesses often struggle to achieve success; doing things that are supposed to gain market share and create success.

Third Generation Leadership and Depression
A recent Scientific American article makes it clear that an early aspect of depression leads to creativity. A person feels “down” or suffers some disquiet about his or her situation and, under the right circumstances, can use this to develop new approaches – the experience is used to harness their creative ability. This is a “blue zone” activity and 3G Leaders are adept at helping people shift their brain’s locus of control into the “blue zone”. Such leadership can help many people avoid the debilitating illness of clinical depression.
