We Have Met the Enemy ...
There are other coffee chains. And damn fine independents. The coffee is good at Dunkin' Donuts ... and McDonald's for that matter. (My next door neighbor will go to the mat defending DD.) Still, Starbucks is sailing in pretty blue ocean to this day. So why is its stock in the tank, why did founder Howard Schultz decide last week to can the CEO and re-take the job himself?

CEOs who sell gain clarity on competitive strategy
CEOs of Nike, Intel and Sun are becoming more involved in the selling process, focusing on tailoring products and services to meet the demands of their top customers. And it's more than just a ceremonial visit. These CEOs are overcoming objections and negotiating deals, giving them an intimate understanding of market pain and the value they may (or may not) provide.

Lesson #2: Develop a Customer-Focused Philosophy
“Let’s say you decide to buy a car – red, two-door,” says Dell. “All sold out – four months to get one – but a really convincing salesperson talks you into the blue, four-door and probably the rust-proofing too. The salesperson gets a nice commission, when she actually sold you a car you didn’t want. Then, the dealer sends a signal back to the factory that blue four-doors are selling really well – build some more!” Contrary to this, Dell’s philosophy is that, “We’ll listen, and we’ll respond…It’s about the customer. It’s that simple.”

The Semantic Web Can Be Your Friend
Alex Iskold, the founder and creator of Adaptive Blue, has a long and helpful post up titled Semantic Web: Difficulties with the Classic Approach. I have a small investment in Adaptive Blue (Union Square Ventures is the lead investor), love what Alex is up to, and relish anything that comes out of his brain.

Consulting Code Blue
Management consulting skills (or the lack of them) make the difference between the success and failure of a consultant. Poor skills usually result in the consultant not being asked back, or worse, being dismissed. Such dismissal is the consulting equivalent of heart failure. In many hospitals, they would call such a failure a "code blue". I use the term "code blue" to describe the situation of consultants who are quite talented but find themselves out the door and on the outs.

Looking for Sky In All The Wrong Places
Ever sit with a single puzzle piece of clouds and wonder how you will ever put the entire sky together? Life as an entrepreneur is often just like that— lots of the little pieces; like creating products, taking care of clients, wrestling computers, etc.— and a whole lot of sky; the big open space that is creating a successful and enjoyable business. I had so many pieces of ‘puzzle sky’, I was drowning in an ocean of sky blue. After over a decade of struggling with my own company to fit all the ‘pieces’ together, I have finally put together the big business puzzle— and it’s not what I thought it would look like.

Together We Can
After the events of September 11th, we saw individuals throughout the United States and the world come together as one - red, white, and blue. The differences in our personalities, race, gender, nationality, religious beliefs, etc. still existed but our very diversity became a way to show the terrorists that we are all different in many ways but still unite as one - red, white, and blue! Wouldn't it be nice if we could harness that same energy in our companies so that we worked together as one (but without the tragedy)? You can!!!

Third Generation Leadership and Depression
A recent Scientific American article makes it clear that an early aspect of depression leads to creativity. A person feels “down” or suffers some disquiet about his or her situation and, under the right circumstances, can use this to develop new approaches – the experience is used to harness their creative ability. This is a “blue zone” activity and 3G Leaders are adept at helping people shift their brain’s locus of control into the “blue zone”. Such leadership can help many people avoid the debilitating illness of clinical depression.

Leaders Control Their Own Destiny
Carl Hiebert tells uplifting stories with his lips (as a professional speaker), but the story he tells with his life is even more inspiring. Carl first made a name for himself (and aviation history) in Canada when he overcame huge odds to organize (that took years) and fly a successful 58-day flight from the Atlantic Ocean in Halifax to the Pacific Ocean in Vancouver - in an open cockpit ultralight. Everyone in our family have since been up with Carl in his two-seater ("flying lawn chairs") aircraft powered by a small 47-horsepower engine.
