PDF Your Board Package
Thankfully I no longer get fedexed binders of board packages from my portfolio companies in advance of a board meeting. Through the modern miracle of email, the board packages show up in my inbox – hopefully a few days (rather than a few hours – or even minutes) before the board meeting. The board packages tend to show up in three different formats – one that is easy to deal with, one that is ok, and one that sucks.

A Strategic Look At Dos and Donts of Board Meeting Minutes From Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach
Do you serve on a board of directors and experience significant inaccuracies and inconsistencies in board minutes? Do you know that board minutes are really a very important resource to governing boards? Minutes of board meetings provide evidence that a board has exercised care in decision-making. The minutes also substantiate that a board is operating in accordance with its Bylaws and other documents and rules. Although there is recognition that board minutes are important, many organizations continue to have inadequate records of board meetings. Your strategic thinking business coach offers a list of the DO’s and DON’Ts of board meeting minutes.

Listening Pays !!!
In a typical 60-minute sales call, a salesperson spends 30 minutes talking about products or services, 9 minutes asking questions ,and 12 minutes letting the customer speak. Clearly, not enough time is spent asking questions and listening to customers - the only way salespeople can learn what it will take to quickly close the sale.

Board Meeting Rules
Following are some board meeting rules that were recently presented to me and my fellow board members by a CEO at one of his first board meetings at a newly funded early stage company. I thought they were brilliant. Feel free to pass them out at your next board meeting.

Lesson #4: Two Heads Are Better Than One
In seventh grade gym class, the two self-proclaimed “slowest and fattest kids in the class” found themselves trailing all of the other students on the track. “Coach was yelling at us, ‘Gentlemen, you have to run the mile in seven minutes or you will have to run it again,’” recalls Greenfield. “Ben then responded, ‘Coach, if I didn’t run it in seven minutes the first time, then I’m sure not going to run it in seven minutes the second time.’”

Talking to Directors
On Saturday, I called a director at a company I’m on the board of to get a reality check on something that is going on. Ten minutes on the phone solved three things: (1) I was able to road test my idea with someone I respect and (2) I incorporated his feedback into my idea, and (3) we were calibrated.

Be More to Do More
Far too many people are trying to do more to be happy instead of trying to be more. Those who seek more peace and happiness in their lives describe what they "do" in a normal day as feeling overwhelmed and unable to get a handle on their lives. When I write the word do on a white board for each activity they perform-from the moment they wake up-within three minutes I have usually written the word do almost a hundred times.

The Board's Role in Fundraising
“Should my board help me raise funds?” The obvious answer is yes, of course they should! Now comes the hard part. Getting the board to actually raise money is a lot tougher than simply saying they should. Many nonprofits, of all sizes and types of mission, overlook the basic steps necessary to engage the board in effective fundraising.

Why Are Meetings One Hour Long?
The vast majority of meetings in the business world are scheduled for one hour. I think this is a paradigm we should challenge for several reasons. 1. Like an old habit, we just fall into the pattern without even thinking about it. 2. We lose track of those extremely valuable minutes within the hour format. We can do better than that. 3. The meeting itself is often inefficient as there is time to schmooze for the first 20 minutes or so, and most of the decisions occur in the final 10 minutes of a meeting. There are many techniques for squeezing more usable time from our daily schedule – and we really need them. Next time you schedule a meeting, try making it 50 minutes rather than an hour. It will emphasize the importance of the minutes and save time in the bargain.

Nonprofit Board Member Manuals - What Should You Include?
When you have a board of directors, it is always a good idea to have a Board Member Manual. A Manual is a great tool for board members to use when they need quick and easy access to critical information about the organization. It compiles important documents into one binder, so they don't waste time and energy looking for what they need in several files or locations. Does your organization have a manual for its board members?
