Bungling Bonnie Raitt, or “How to Handle Challenges, Learning Curves, and Breakdowns in Your Business.”
| |
| Oh, it was ugly! I hadn’t been out singing karaoke in a few months, so when my gal pal Andrea asked me to go to sing recently, I decided to try a song I’d never sung before – the rather drippy but beautiful Bonnie Raitt ballad, “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”
It’s a fabulous song when it’s done well, but for whatever reason, I wasn’t on my game. When I got up to sing, I immediately hit the wrong note, and stayed off key for the first few verses. Yikes! Karaoke - on stage, with all those folks watching. Having that mic in your hand, it’s sort of one of those sink or swim moments. Just like business sometimes.

Customer Service

| The Golden Rule, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you," may seem self-evident in the way we try to conduct our personal lives. Yet this axiom is assuming new importance as a guiding principle in the world of business. The climate of the recession-ridden early 1980s, when customers blithely traded away high-quality service in exchange for price reductions or convenience, is no more. Instead, customers are demanding service again. Companies of all sizes are realizing that their strongest selling point can sometimes boil down to treating customers as they would like to be treated - or better. "Consumers are beginning to feel that their needs haven't been met," explains Bonnie Jansen of the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs. "They're sick of getting poor service all the time." |

From Braces to Races: A Lesson in Motivation
| |
| Bonnie St. John Deane grew up in hospitals, in leg braces, and on the wrong side of the tracks, but that didn't stop her from believing that an African-American girl, with only one leg, could learn to ski.
As soon as I learned to ski a little, I set my sights on qualifying to compete in the 1984 Disabled Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. Such an outrageous dream made me stand taller just thinking about it. |
