How Does a Bestseller Happen? A Case Study in Hitting #1 on the New York Times
| |
| Last Friday, the impossible happened and a lifelong dream came true: The 4-Hour Workweek hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list! Thank you all for your incredible encouragement and support.
More unbelievable, this week 4HWW is simultaneously #1 on the NY Times and #1 on the Wall Street Journal business bestseller lists.
How is this possible? How could a book from a first-time author — with no offline advertising or PR — hit both of these lists and stick for three months and counting? |

Great writing, unfiltered
| |
| Here's what used to happen: A publisher had a magazine, or a big pile of stamps and a mailing list. She'd hire a copywriter or a stable of them. Sometimes the combination worked out and end up with the New Yorker or LL Bean. But other times (most of the time) it's just a waste. Either the stuff that goes out is lousy or the great writers don't get heard. (More than 70,000 books got published in the US last year... how many have you read?) |

| |
| While I had published over 40 books before I worked inside a publishing house, I never realized the drive for the publisher were the business and financial aspects. I just wanted to write good books. I had no conception of my need to market or make money. |

Book Marketing Books Every Author Must Read
| |
| As a book marketing guy and book publicist it’s imperative for me to keep up with all of the great books and magazine articles being published on the topic of book marketing.
I’ve read dozens and dozens of books on book marketing and usually have found a morsel or two of useful information in each one. Here’s a list of my favorites. By the way, I’ve personally met or have spoken to each author and can attest to the veracity of the material they present and their credentials to discuss these topics.

It’s All About PR
| |
| You learn that, in the book world, PR is everything. When you walk into a bookstore, you are walking into a treasure house of 140,000 books. Online at amazon.com, there are 2.5 million books. Somewhere in your mind, dimly, you knew that, but nothing drives it home so much as walking into a bookstore and seeing rack upon rack of beautiful books and then you go find your section and see all the racks of beautiful self-help books and then... |

| |
| This article was originally published in The National Networker
Has this been the year networking has grown up in the UK? There certainly seem to have been more changes in the last 12 months than any comparable period in the last decade. |

What Are You Reading?
| |
| I'm sure you've heard the commercial: "What's in your wallet?" My question to you, today, is what's on your bookshelf? I love to read and I have many, many books. In fact, my promise to myself this year was to actually read each of the books I do have before buying any new ones. |

What A Beautiful Year
| |
| It was a weird year, and in many ways, a difficult year. It was a year of uncertainty, even a year of adversity for many people. It was a mean year for politics, a brutal year for business, and a disastrous year for the economy. But it was also a beautiful year.... |
