Love your job
Getting up and going to work each day is something that most of us do for many years. Yet few of us jump out of bed each and every day and can't wait to get there. It seems that we have to whine and moan about it to keep up with everyone else. It does not need to be like this and it is preferable that it isn't. When employees love what they do, they will go that extra mile for their boss and a far more positive culture will be created. This in turn can turn into increased productivity and profits.

Lesson #1: Motivate Your Workers
“Individuals don’t win, teams do,” Walton once said. If you worked for Wal-Mart, Sam Walton was your partner, not your boss.

Lesson #2: Prioritize Your Customer
“There is only one boss,” said Walton. “The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.”

The Mighty Amazon: Bezos Books his Ticket for Success
“I’m going to do this crazy thing,” Bezos told his boss on Wall Street one day. “I’m going to start this company selling books online.” It was the spring of 1994 and the Internet was growing at 2,300 percent a year. Bezos knew things just didn’t grow that fast. “It’s highly unlikely,” he says, “and that started me thinking, ‘What kind of business plan might make sense in that context of growth?’”

Lesson #2: Growth Happens in Bounds and Leaps – of Faith
Jeff Bezos is a risk taker. There are no other words to describe the man who put everything he had into a venture that many said was doomed to failure, even calling it Amazon.toast for the company’s first five years. Bezos might not have known what the future held in store for him and his small garage-based start-up, but he was sure about one thing: “I knew that if I failed I wouldn’t regret that, but I knew the one thing I might regret is not trying.”

Lesson #4: Discipline Yourself So Your Customers Do Not Have To

Lesson #3: The Boss Can Come Back
If there is one thing Steinbrenner is famous for besides his ability to manage a great baseball team, it is his ability to get himself into trouble. From being banned from baseball for life to feuding with and changing managers 20 times, Steinbrenner is no stranger to controversy. But what is even more remarkable, is his ability to bounce back and reclaim the team he worked so hard to promote.

Lesson #5: “It's who you are as an organization that makes everything possible.”
If it is who you are as an organization that makes everything possible, then it is who you are as a leader that makes the organization what it is. Efficient Toast
There is an interesting article in this month's Harvard Business Review called "Breaking the Trade-off Between Efficiency and Service." The basic idea is that service businesses, unlike manufacturers, have the unfortunate challenge that customers come barging in and interfere with their operations, introducing significant variability. Most businesses think they face a black and white choice:—accommodate the variability, or reduce it. The author, Frances Frei, says there are better ways to address this challenge.

Using Your Time
The question often asked is do we really use our time to our own best interests? To the best interests of our family, and the best interests of our employer (or employees, if we happen to be the boss)?

People You Don't Like
I’ve been asked many times, “How do I build a relationship with a person I just don’t like?” And typically, we’re talking about the workplace – a customer or boss or associate. My answer is usually, “Not everyone is going to be your best friend, but if you’re forced to deal with a person, why not make the relationship more personal and real? Wouldn’t you want a better relationship for the sake of success, mutuality, and most importantly, less angst and more joy?”

How to Check E-mail Twice a Day… or Once Every 10 Days

What Not To Say To Your Boss
If you’re smart, you’ve learned what not to say in a romantic relationship. You’d never tell a woman she looked fat in a dress or tell a man he was losing his hair. But have you learned what not to say in a business relationship?

Lighten Up / Tighten Up
As I was writing my previous post about The Constipation of Scale I got an email from a co-investor talking about a CEO / CTO conflict. It had an interesting phrase in it that I realized applies to many CEO / CTO relationships – “CEO needs to lighten up and CTO needs to tighten up.”

Sue Your Boss
Sometimes I just can’t believe the stuff I read.

Drive-By Flattery
If someone you know has done amazing work, don't just thank or compliment the person. Tell his or her boss. I call this drive-by flattery and do it all the time.

Do Not Undervalue Yourself
Generosity and working for free when you're first changing careers is one thing; undervaluing yourself is another.

Talk to Your Boss about Your Next Job
Guess what? If you've built a strong relationship with your boss, you should be talking to him or her about your next job. It's stupid to pretend you will be at your current job forever when everybody's thinking about their next move.

Young Boss, Older Worker
In today’s multi-generational workplace, it’s not unusual for an older worker to have a younger boss. In order for that relationship to survive, both partners have to capitalize on each other’s experiences and strengths.

7 Tips for Fighting Information Overload on Valentine’s Day and Beyond
Here are 7 tips for avoiding information overload from Ron Geraci:

Getting vs. Taking
Most people spend a lot of time to get an education. They wait for the teacher (hopefully a great one) to give them something of value.

Productivity
I worked in a grocery store as a youngster. The Depression was on, inventories were limited and merchants frequently ran out of stock items. As a result, the merchants would borrow from each other until their next shipment came in. I was the "runner" for our store and Charlie Scott was the "runner" for the store across the street.

If You're Fired...
Have you ever been fired? No one likes to think about it but, unfortunately, with today’s economy and faltering job market, it certainly can be a strong possibility for anyone in any field.

How to organize the room
One more post about conferences. (Except it's really about any meeting).

Fixing Problems
Question: Can you remember a day when you did not have some "problem," irritation, disappointment, defeat or set-back of some kind? It might be having to make an unexpected stop at the service station because your mate drove your car and neglected to refill it. Or maybe your boss gave you incomplete information on an important project and now you have to start all over.

Rudeness at Work
How important is it to you that people be polite at work? A professor of psychology at West Chester University in Pennsylvania conducted a study all about rudeness in the workplace. Jennifer Bunk found that about 75 percent of workers say they’re treated rudely at least once a year. That can mean anything from being ignored by the boss or hearing snide remarks from coworkers.

60 Hour Work Weeks Can You and Your Career Survive Them
In the 80s while I was an account executive for AT&T most people in my organization worked normal (for then) business hours. By that I mean they arrived close to 8 or 8:30AM and left between 5 and 5:30PM. By 6 PM the office was empty. No one seemed to notice or care how many hours people worked. I had a boss nicknamed "Dry Cleaner Sam" because they joked he was "in by 10, out by 4".

Tale of Two Clients - Sales Training! :) versus Saaaales Training (:
Here's an interesting comparison for you. Two client companies are on the exact same sales development time line. (Same time line but separate from each other - they don't even know about each other) Both of their sales forces went through sales force evaluations at the exact same time. Both of their sales management teams were developed at the same time. Both of their sales organizations received sales infrastructure help (sales process, sales pipeline, metrics, sales recruiting process, etc).

Tale of Two Clients - Sales Training :) vs. SAAAALES TRAINING :(
You've heard it before. It flows down hill. Your organization can only be as effective as the weakest leadership link. When it comes to a sales development initiative, you must start out committed and remain committed to drive the process until the change you demand has been accomplished. Anything short of that is a formula for failure.

How to handle workplace bullying.
Bullying is an activity which most people associate with their schooldays. The playground bully is a well-established stereotype. Sadly, bullying does not disappear when you walk out the school gates for the last time. Work bullies aren’t much different than school yard bullies. They victimise people they perceive to be weaker and smaller. To feel better about themselves, they try to make others feel insignificant. It can be a real shock to people when they find themselves, as an adult, being bullied by another adult. Unfortunately it is an all too common complaint in the workplace.

Publicity...Everything Changes But the Tool
As the world turns so does the hot and not communications tools. We jump from print, online news; websites, blogs, microblogs. Proponents of each will swear that "this is the source, the tool that will rise to the top and become the news source of choice." But when you want to be informed (or better yet when YOU want to inform) you think of the lowly, maligned press release. It's not dead. It's just that so few can do the darn thing right. Let's look at the facts and do it right...

Why a Top Sales Manager Must Always "Tune Into the Right Frequency"
It's definitely clichéd, but I think this is one of the most critical elements to successful sales management and that is to make sure you are tuned into the right radio frequency with your salespeople. There's only one radio station that your sales executives like to listen to and that radio station is: WIFM. (You might say WIIFM, but let's not get too technical here...). This is the "What's-In-It-For-Me" radio frequency. This is the only station they pay any attention to and if you're not broadcasting on it all the time, 24-7, then your sales reps are gonna switch you over to some other station on XM or Sirius radio...or worse yet, turn off the radio completely!

Management actions that speak louder than words
Do as I say, not as I do. This doesn't seem to work in parenting and it doesn't work in business either. Communication, despite knowing it to be a problem, continues to be a challenge in most organizations. In fact these non-verbal messages define the organization's culture over time. Here we identify four management actions that transmit plenty of information to the organization about what is valued and not valued.

Neither wants their sales managers to feel that it is OK to spend time in the field and avoid administration.

4 Easy Steps to Finding Legitimate Work At Home Jobs
A few months ago, I was enjoying my morning bowl of cereal and going through my bills. I got nervous, went on line to check my bank balance and began to panic. I had no idea where I would come up with the money to cover everything. Earlier this year, I asked my boss for a much deserved raise, but unsurprisingly, with the state of the economy, he said no. This was right on the heels of not receiving a year end bonus. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I pledged to myself that I would start working only 8 hours a day instead of my usual 10. I would head home and spend 2-3 hours each night working on my own business.

Writing Training, Business Communication Training, Presentation Skills Training And Instruction in Effective Communication
Writing or speaking in public, effective communication begins and ends with the "what" -- the content. Once writing training and presentation skills training help you gain confidence in that (and you will because you're an expert; otherwise, why would you be writing or speaking in the first place?), the "how" will begin to fall into place. To get there, you should take advantage of the fact that WRITING IS THINKING, learn to FOCUS ON YOUR READER OR AUDIENCE and EDIT YOURSELF SCRUPULOUSLY (quality control). Also, no matter how casually you may approach emails, that form of business communication is ubiquitous and requires the same writing skills as hard-copy memos or reports or letters. So the same three foundations of effective communication should apply when you start tapping away at the keyboard.

180 and 360 Degree Assessments for the Sales Force
There are not a lot of companies that undertake 180 degree or 360 degree assessments of the sales force and that's a good thing because there are so many limitations. The 180 - The salesperson or sales manager does a self-rating on the predetermined competencies and attributes and the individual's boss conducts the same ratings. The 360 - The sales manager does a self-rating on the predetermined competencies and attributes and both the sales manager's boss and the salespeople that report to the sales manager conduct the same ratings. So the 180 and the 360 are nearly the same except for the number of people and the vertical depth. What are the limitations?

My Boss is not My Brother
One of my coaching clients recently got a much wanted promotion. He was so beyond excited he felt like he was walking on air, for, oh for about a week. Then he called and said "What did I do". Actually he used much more colorful language than that. He had gotten onto the most kick-ass team in the company, the place where new ideas magically become products in the blink of an eye, or so he thought. Yet, at the same time he was promoted, so was another man who was now his boss. When he called to tell me his balloon was deflated and he was now dragging around on the ground, he was feeling bewildered. In only one week he saw his boss make blunder after blunder.

What's Fair or Not at Work?
Have you ever been treated unfairly at work? Were you ever asked to do more than your fair share? Have you gone above and beyond all reasonable requests, doing an exemplary job and getting no recognition? That is how Joelle saw her job. She worked harder than any of her peers, in fact she even picked up the boss' cleaning on her way into work one day. Not that he demanded it, it was just on the road to work and he was saying he needed a certain suit for an important meeting. Did he thank her? Well, he said, "Hey I appreciate that" and then went about his day. She was bummed. He could have at least given her some time off for having to make the stop. She told others she was sure that no matter how hard she worked she would never, ever get the praise that was due her.

Salesperson Wimp-Out: Cutting the Price "Boss, if we could just cut our price 15%, we have a chance at the business." Tired of hearing your salespeople say that? The problem isn't your pricing, it's your people. Somewhere they've learned that a good way to compete is to cut the price, and they've gotten away with it. Your job as a professional manager is to train your salespeople to compete, plant their feet, and win the business…on something other than price. Train your salespeople to keep customers loyal to you regardless of price because your company offers something the customer will have to give up if he or she buys on price alone. CONGRUENCE AND TENSION
Many years ago and much earlier in my career I was Manager of the Employee Assistance Program for the Province of Manitoba. STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT OF STRESS

We’re Just Trying to Find Our Place in the World
In the golden era parents would bring their kids to work so they'd get an idea of how hard working really was. Today the kids are "working" but they brought their toys to work...you know iPhones, iPads, iPods. Boss saw the devices he thought they were cool so he (or she) sent out the assistant to buy a couple for him/her (so much neater than the old Blackberry). He told IT they had to support his devices and they said "yes sir." Everyone copies the boss so it went from BYOK (kid) to BYOD (device). Great company doesn't have to buy them just keep them from sucking the lifeblood out of the company's databases...great, just great! Life isn't easy but hey you're having fun with your devices aren't you ???

Leaders are Always on Stage
As a leader you must never forget that you are the boss. You have power, and your decisions impact the lives and careers of the people on your team. Because you are the boss your people watch and analyze your every move-looking for meaning and clues to what you are thinking. What is most important to understand is that your people place meaning on your behaviors based on their own unique perspective.

Is procrastination holding you back?
As a coach there are two issues above all others that I am asked by people to help deal with more than any others – the first is work-life balance (or life-work balance as I prefer to call it) and the second big issue is procrastination. Perhaps you are not surprised? Perhaps you are a procrastinator yourself? Don’t worry you are in good company and the habit of putting things off until another day is something we all do at some time or another. Why not read on NOW to find out more.

Being micromanaged is something most of us have complained about at some point. We get a task to do, then the boss keeps badgering us with details of how we should do it. The result is a feeling of exasperation or even helplessness. Clearly, having a micromanager for a boss reduces our empowerment and energy to do the task well. Usually we blame the boss. You Cannot Afford to Take Your Eye Off the Ball When Managing People
Many business owners and managers will often say their personal assistant is invaluable to them yet they often treat them as if they're not. Day after day, week after week the P.A. is in the office, slogging away making sure the work gets done. In many instances it is the P.A. that holds the business together. That's scary isn't it? In my own experiences if it wasn't for the P.A., there would be no way I would do business with the company.

The Incompetent Interviewer
If you've been job hunting lately, chances are strong you've run into an incompetent interviewer. My experience is that many people responsible for interviewing see it as a necessary evil. It's not what they want to do so it's something to get over quickly so they can go back to what it is they do well. Don't assume you will be meeting with a polished interviewer.

Would you hire this person?
This addresses a pet peeve of mine. And that’s the “Objective” on resumes. Here is a recent example on a resume submitted for my review: “To support the growth and profitability of an organization that provides challenge, encourages advancement, and rewards achievement with the opportunity to utilize my experience, skills, and proven abilities.” Sounds great – would you like to hire this person? But what do you know about this person? Is he/she a candidate for flipping hamburgers or for a CEO position? Does he have skills in supervising, organizing, planning, selling, marketing, etc? Is she proficient in any computer skills? We don’t know. This “Objective” tells us absolutely nothing about the person. It was a total waste of time on the applicant’s part.

What Leaders Forget to Do
When people become a boss for the first time, they usually screw it up badly. Too often people think being the boss means "doing what I used to do except, except on a larger scale, and now I've got people I can order around."
