Impossible Achievements

Last weekend, I did something that I thought was impossible. I broke a piece of wood into two pieces with my bare hand. I was in total shock afterward, but a good kind of shock. Breaking that wood was such a stretch for me that afterward, my mind started to play tricks on me. I wondered if I did really do it. Luck for me, there was a room full of people watching me and could verify that I did actually do it. AND I have the piece of wood to prove it!

Book Review: Endless Referrals

As a small business owner, I’m always searching for ways to build my list of referrals. Two previous books I’ve reviewed (Brag! and Networking Magic) also described strategies for building referrals, but this book is my new favorite.

Making the Skeleton Dance: Bragging about the Negatives

Truly great salespeople don’t hide stumble over potential negatives and they certainly don’t hide them. Truly great salespeople use potential negatives as selling points, even bragging points. You can—and should—do the same. Make the skeleton dance. And the next time a prospect asks you about the price of your software, don’t mealy-mouth and don’t apologize. Brag about that price tag: the higher the price, the more effective the brag.

The Cost of Being a Perfectionist or a Workaholic for Attorneys

Are you a perfectionist or a workaholic? Many law firms and other businesses encourage this. Lawyers and other professionals often brag about it. What is it costing the business and the individual.

Book Review: Brag!

While last month's read ("Networking Magic") detailed how to approach networking, this month's book by Peggy Klaus ("Brag! The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn Without Blowing It") focuses on how to talk about you (and your business). I have followed her advice with great results (including increased confidence).

How to Explain your Achievements in your Resume

If you are going to convince an employer or recruitment consultant that you are worth inviting to an interview, you have to be able to articulate your achievements and contributions in a compelling way that will demonstrate how you have added value to the organisations for which you have worked. This doesn’t mean you have to brag or embellish the truth. It does mean that you have to make sure that your next employer understands that you didn’t leave your brain at the door each day you came to work and that you applied your skills, knowledge and expertise in ways that were useful to the organisations in which you worked.

Workaholism: An Entrepreneurs Compulsion for Acceptance, Work and Money

| Workaholism is merely a reaction to a need to be right, to be in control. According to Judith Sills, Ph.D. in Excess Baggage, “You are an organized person who treasures productivity. If you had a psychiatric label it would be obsessive & compulsive, and you brag about being a workaholic.”

TV Stations - How Many “Likes” Do You Need?

| Why do TV stations think bribing people to "Like" their facebook page for a chance to win an iPad has any long-lasting value? So I hit "like" and get a chance to win an iPad - so what? How many contests have you entered in your life you have totally forgotten about no matter how many direct mail pieces you received (and tossed)?
Yes, the station can brag it has 7,500 "likes" but does that really translate into anything? For you facebook users, don't you scan your feed for the people and brands you really, authentically and voluntarily "like" rather than those you simply "liked" on a whim? Skipping over posts is today's version of discarding direct mail pieces. |
