Brains, complexity, leaders
Our brain's area of control, our world view, and our ability to deal appropriately with the complexity we face are key factors in entrepreneurial and leadership success. The need to understand about the brain’s areas of control and to develop “blue zone control” becomes increasingly important as the business grows. Successful leaders are comfortable with the levels of complexity they confront and are constantly seeking new tools for dealing with the increased levels of complexity they know are around the corner

A positive work-out for your brain for business owners and would-be business owners alike
There are many of us that go to the gym to give our bodies a work-out, but how many of you give you mind a work-out too? I would hazard a guess that not many people give their brain a physical work-out; there are those of you that have bought the "Nintendo Brain Tease", which is said to help our brains and our memory. However, this is not many people that even do this and what I have in mind is to change your thinking to a positive mode of thinking, so here goes my idea for a brain work out: 1. Each day you wake up make sure you "Think in a positive way". Begin your day with a big smile and take your mind off to a lovely place, a special place you would love to be. This could be a Caribbean Island or by your favourite lake, it does not matter, all that matters is that when you think about this place it makes you feel really good.

Leadership and Fear
As entrepreneurs, managers, and leaders, how do you learn? Learning by experience is not necessarily bad – sometimes, however, it can be extremely costly. Is it something that you can always afford? People with their brain’s locus of control in the “Blue Zone” are prepared to learn from coaches and mentors as well as from experience.

The Idea Harvester
A short article on how usability evolves products; how exploitation of customer brains moves innovation within industry. This article deals with the basic principles of "usability" -- the new computer science buzzword of the past two decades. Remember when people actually owned the things they made? Not anymore...

Demystifying the Geek Speak on Your Website
Confusion reigns in most people’s brains when the geeks start to speak. Computer geeks talk in some extra terrestrial language that seems more apt in a Star Wars movie than on your website. Once you break down the terminology it all starts to become less threatening and more like a now age game of hide and seek. Unlike traditional hide and seek where you spend the whole game trying not to be found. Now your purpose is to be so visible you can’t help but be found.

Fired or Fat
If given the choice, would you rather get fired or get fat? It looks like most Americans would prefer to take their chances in my boardroom.

Men and Cosmetic Surgery
Not that long ago I talked about a new study that found more and more women are becoming addicted to Botox. Now I read that men are fueling a boom in cosmetic surgery and other treatments.

Really Bad Powerpoint
I wrote this about four years ago, originally as an ebook. I figured the idea might spread and then the problem would go away--we'd no longer see thousands of hours wasted, every single day, by boring PowerPoint presentations filled with bullets. Not only has it not gone away, it's gotten a lot worse. Last week I got a template from a conference organizer. It seems they want every single presenter to not only use bullets for their presentations, but for all of us to use the same format! Shudder. So, for posterity, and in the vain hope it might work, here we go again:

Guerrilla Learning
Let's start with the bad news. Much that you have learned in the past, although God's own truth at the time, has changed, leaving you misinformed or uninformed, so that a lot of what you know is wrong. In social situations, your lack of information is inconvenient, but in business, it's suicidal.

Guerrilla Marketing Yourself
Once you understand that people judge you from the first moment you meet them, and realize that there is a range of tools available to help support your positioning, you can be more successful in every encounter.

Retirement
Are you prepared for retirement? As a nation, our citizenry is getting older and older. At the turn of the century the average person lived less than three years after he retired. Now the average is more than five times that, and the typical 50-year-old of today will probably have twenty-plus years in retirement.

How to Never Forget Anything Again
The human brain is a wonderful thing, but it’s a bit faulty as a tool for remembering things. Luckily for us (and for our frazzled brains), technology has stepped in to help out.

The confusion
We frequently confuse internal biochemistry (caused by habits and genetics) with external events. If we didn't, marketing wouldn't work nearly as well.

Dumb Jocks … Or Smart Athletes?
We all know the stereotype. The great athlete didn't spend much time honing his intellectual skills; instead, all of his efforts were spent on the athletic field and thus, he tends to be lacking in the brains department. Like all stereotypes, this idea does not encompass all athletes, but still seems to be pervasive, especially among football players, where we all chuckle about the easy courses they take in college, etc. For example, it seems like 90 % of football players are Sociology majors, often the easiest curriculum at the university. However, some new research cited in Scientific American is stereotype breaking.

Ten Steps To Take Charge of Conflict
The drama that often accompanies conflict is what gives conflict its bad name. Most of us veer away from screaming matches, stand offs and personal attacks. But, conflict does have redeeming value … especially for those of us over 50. According to Barbara Strauch, author of The Secret Life of the Grown-up Brain, we need to present our brains with things that make it wake up, pay attention, and work really hard. To give your brain a workout, Strauch suggests talking with people who disagree with you because it helps you sharpen your own thinking and challenges you. So having conflict in your life can actually make you smarter. To benefit from benefits of conflict, and lose the drama, here is what I have learned about taking charge of conflict.

Why Internet Explorer Must Die
If you’re someone who lives more in the online world, you’re sure to have heard of or participated in the eternal battle of the browsers – IE vs. others. If you’re a new denizen of the World Wide Web, you would want to know which browser best suits your online needs, but chances are, you’ve already been warned off Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. This is not just because of IE’s poor track record as a browser, but also no concrete changes being made to newer versions, despite Microsoft one of the biggest players in the market. So, we decided to debate why newer browsers are much more preferable when compared to IE one by one so as to make your choice easier for you.

What You Think is What You Do (and Who You Are)
Most people when they want to figure things out or change what is going on in their lives tend to focus on the external…the doing. They say to themselves, “What do I need to be doing differently?” When the question should be, “How am I thinking about this situation?” Anything we do in the ‘external’ has its genesis in our brains…the internal. Whatever is happening outside of us in our lives is a reflection of what is going on inside of us…specifically, inside our brains. So if we want to change, we need to focus first on how we think about it…whatever it is. How are we connecting the dots and how can we build new hardwiring so that we can travel a different road to where we actually want to go instead of the old road that keeps dumping us off in the same place that isn’t working for us.

Larger businesses have Boards of Directors who are legally responsible for oversight. Even many smaller business have them as well, and others prefer to use a Board of Advisors. Regardless of how you create accountability, it is a proven fact that you will do a better job as a leader within your organization if you have an external individual or body of people you are accountable to. This article provides insights into how you can create and utilize some form of Board governance for your business.

Decisions based on emotion = BAD for business
In recent years, there has been a rise in discussion and research around what makes a good leader good. From those discussions, a new field of study and measurement has arisen,. It is called Emotional intelligence, or EQ. (Don't ask me why it isn't EI, but it's not.) In simple terms, EQ is the ability to know and control your emotions, and the ability to recognize and empathize with the emotions of others. For the expertrs in this field, please, don't get your feathers ruffled. Defining EQ is not the point. The point is, emotion does NOT belong in business, and often leads to really bad decisions. Emotion seems to play the biggest role in family owned business where family members are either co-owners or employees. This article talks about how to handle these situations, whether you are on the verge of wading into one, or already there.

Ready to Snap Crazy Busy and the Lure of Modern Life
We expect our brains to keep track of more than they can handle and then find ourselves losing and forgetting things — impatient, anxious, worried and plagued by short attention spans. Why Women Entrepreneurs Differ from Men
“Many people perceive a style difference as the other person’s personal failing.” Deborah Tannen Have you noticed? Women and Men aren’t just dissimilar below the neck. They often act and express themselves differently as well. That is due to changes in an entirely different area than below the belt. It is their brain, which is located above the neckline. In general, she says “slow” and he says “go.”

Inquiry As A Replacement For Self Doubt
I had several conversations with entrepreneurs this week who were struggling with a specific issue that had plagued them for a while. In each case these are strong, capable entrepreneurs who I’ve known for a long time. As with all entrepreneurs (and humans), they have strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots. In each case, I felt like self-doubt had crept into their brains around the specific weakness they were struggling with.

High Price Raises Perception of Quality
In an article in the January 2008 Economist magazine, a study was cited that was done by Dr. Antonio Rangel of the California Institute of Technology. Rangel found that if people are told a wine that they are tasting is expensive, the perception in their brain evolves to increase the quality of the wine they had consumed based on nothing other than higher price meaning a higher quality.

WHAT'S DRIVING US TO DISTRACTION?
Is new technology helping us or hindering us?

It’s The Little Things That You Do……..
For many of us, life is experienced in our heads, rather than fully felt in our bodies. Our brains are bombarded with so much information from every corner, and in consequence, so much is missed. Especially the little things.

The Power of Intention
Perhaps one of the worst forms of multitasking is when we're trying to spend “quality” time with a loved one, while also trying to be “productive.” I'll never forget an experience I had years ago when I went to my daughter's soccer game on a day that I was feeling overwhelmed and behind. I had grabbed the mail on the way out the door. In my attempt to be efficient with my time, I was sorting through the mail while watching the game. Unfortunately, I was looking down when my daughter made her only goal of the game. I felt terrible when someone said, “Did you see that? Your daughter just made a goal!” Although she never knew, it was one of those moments I could never get back. (I could have read the mail anytime.)
