Difference Makers Have Courage
| |
| When Jackie Robinson was brought to the major leagues by Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey, he was the first African-American to play major league ball. At that point, Mr. Rickey carefully explained to him that he would have thousands of chances to lose his temper and get upset because of the overt racism that existed in the major leagues at that time. He warned him about the hate-mail and boos he would get because many of the white players and fans would be adamantly opposed to his presence in the major leagues. |

The Small Business Owners Path of Least Resistance
| |
| Recently, I was sitting having my morning coffee, calmly looking out the window enjoying the thick cluster of oak and pine trees in my back yard. The sun was peeking through the dense leaves, and a stunning red cardinal was perched on a branch. It really felt like heaven and I felt momentarily grateful for the journey that had brought me to that moment. |

The "Never Play Favorites" Myth
| |
| Many year's ago, while training at a branch of Dean Whitter (now Morgan Stanley), I learned an important management truth. The branch manager at this office was mandated by corporate to spend a minimum of 60 percent of his time working with and supporting the stock brokers who had been given offices (based on their top performance) surrounding the "bull pen," where the vast majority of the brokers had cubicles. Those staff members in the cubicles were allocated 40 percent of the manager's time. |

What Is Under Your Covers?
| |
| My new client, Mark, just bought a new business. He was a homebuilder and since that industry wasn’t going too well lately, he decided to branch out into a line of kitchen renovation products.
His reasoning was that since he was used to talking with people about building $300,000 homes that it should be easy to sell $2500 kitchen accessories. |

Whether Terrorists or Hooligans the End Result is Still The Same Mess
| |
| Last week's Panel discussion regarding the May 18th bombing of the Royal Bank branch at the corner of First and Bank in the Glebe brought to light many interesting insights including the consensus that this was not a terrorist act but an act of vandalism perpetrated by disaffected youths - probably from the neighborhood.
That said the resulting consequences are nonetheless quite real in that there was both extensive property damage to the bank's branch, as well as a "tightening of security" that John Baglow said would lead to a tougher crackdown on legitimate protesters at the actual G8 and G20 Summits at the end of June.
With the estimated costs of security rising from what now appears to be a modest $179 million allocation in March to an estimated $930 million today, does the G8 and G20 Summits really matter? |
