Be Careful For What You Ask For!

| How many of you have heard of the saying "Ask and you shall receive"? Ok - great concept, but how does it actually work? Many thinkers, religious, new age and scientific have been exploring this puzzle in recent years. |

The Law of Attraction vs. Nonattachment
| |
| Dear Jane,
I’m excited about a potential new job but I’m holding myself in check, trying to practice the Buddhist concept of nonattachment. But The Secret teaches that if I don’t let myself get excited about the job, I won’t attract it to me. These philosophies are confusing to me. Which one should I pick? |

Manage Stress to Boost Productivity
| |
| If you want to be at the top of your game, spend the time to determine which “rituals” help you to alleviate stressful feelings and be committed to taking care of yourself. I have a Zen Buddhist saying on the wall of my office which says, “Live half for yourself, and half for others.” It’s a good philosophy to live by. |

Talent Development and The Wheel of Becoming
| |
| In the Buddhist belief, the Wheel of Becoming is a representation of life, death, and rebirth. The energy produced by one’s past actions (karma) are paid forward into future outcomes. Practitioners can determine their place within the concentric circles of the wheel, which delineate the various realms of being (see the graphic above).
In talent management terms, think of the Wheel of Becoming as transitioning from one level of personal development to rebirth at a higher level. There are many models of human development (see Jane Lovinger’s “Stages of Ego Development”, or Robert Kegans “The Evolving Self” to name but two). One that fits neatly with the concept of Wheel of Becoming, however, is “The Leadership Pipeline” by Charan, Drodder, and Noel.

To be or not to be, that is the question
| |
| Have you ever heard about Affirmations? Athletes call them visualizations, Priests call them prayers and Buddhist monks call them meditation on a topic. So, what am I saying here exactly, what has praying got to do with affirmations and visualizations?
Focused meditation, praying, visualizations, affirmations are according to my experience all part of the same concept. They are all a part of getting ready to become what you want to be or get ready to achieve what you want to achieve. However, if you don't get the energy and inspiration to get out of your couch in front of the TV and go out into the real world to MAKE IT HAPPEN - you are just wasting your time. |

I've Figured Out President Obama's Religion
| |
| I've been hearing a lot of talk lately about President Obama's religion (if any). A recent poll discovered that a high and rising number of Americans believe Mr. Obama is a Muslim. This prompted a strong protest from a White House spokesperson, who claimed the president is "obviously a Christian," based on the fact that he does things like meet regularly with spiritual advisors (things that a Muslim would also do, as would a Buddhist or a Hindu or a Navajo medicine man).

Meditation Can Change Your Life
| |
| Practicing meditation is something anyone can do regardless of your religious or spiritual affiliations. My spiritual practice was provided to me by Buddhist Monks and other influences (including physicists and Shaman), but your practice can be whatever you want it to be. What counts in meditation is the act of meditating or quieting the mind. |
