The Business of Ethics and The Ethics of Business
In 2002 the corporate world in the United States was rocked with scandals. Enron, Arthur Anderson, WorldCom, Citi Group, HCA, Tyco and others were headline news in print and the lead story on the television news because of business ethics failures. This caused me to reemphasize and stress to each of my clients then and now, the importance of business ethics and to challenge each of my clients to integrate their core values into their policies, practices and decision making. And I recommend that they rededicate themselves to conducting business to the highest ethical standards.
“BUSINESS ETHICS MUST BE PRESENTED, PRESERVED AND PROMOTED”
Business ethics are an almost daily topic in the news, in business schools, in the workplace and in our homes. I pay close attention to business ethics and what is written about them in my daily life as a strategic thinking, planning and business coach. I am still astounded at the remarks of major corporations a few years ago when they said they “waived or suspended” the ethics code or requirements. I am still at a total loss at how anyone can “suspend or waive” ethics. While I may not be able to explain the suspension or waiving of ethics, I do hope to provide some solid advice on what business and other organizations need to do today to present, preserve and promote ethics in their organizations. Here are action items I would recommend:

Nine Commitments That Will Emphasize Business Ethics and Company Core Values Are Extremely Crucial To Your Business
In the last few years, business ethics and company core values are among the most critical discussions I facilitate during strategic planning and business coaching endeavors. This is partly due to he tremendous negative reaction to corporate ethics scandals. My encouragement to clients is to go “public” with their core values and ethical standards so it becomes known what the company stands for and how the leaders will conduct business. So, you may ask how would a business go about establishing and emphasizing a set of core values and ethical standards? Based upon my personal and professional experiences and research, I would recommend making the following nine commitments:

Breaking the sales barrier
Sales with ethics and values is the key to two critical aspects when building and maintaining a strong and productive sales team. To these values add inspirational leadership and a clear and precise product knowledge and simple sales skills and watch the sales grow.
E + V + V + M = L
Ethics + Virtues + Values + Morals = Life (and well-being). Why? There seems to be some confusion about the terms Ethics, Values, Virtues and Morals. Certainly Ethics and Morals are used indiscriminately and are considered interchangeable as are Virtues and Values. Yet they each have a name and therefore a purpose.
