We speak of government as if it were our neighbor, pastor, teacher, friend or foe. It is none of these and yet it is all of these. Government, at any level, is simply an organizational structure and is incapable of any action or activity until people are inserted into the equation. Our founding fathers meant it when they said “of the people, by the people and for the people”
So the problem and/or solution lie with us.

Tax Hikes Are Not About Revenue

| It's pretty simple. When the U.S. federal government decreases income taxes, they increase government revenue by creating more business opportunities, more jobs, and more taxpayers. Investment dollars flow into the country. On the other hand, when the government increases taxes, they decrease government revenue. Opportunities and jobs are lost; investment dollars flow away to other, more-business-friendly countries.

| The big news these days is the federal government’s debt ceiling. Every time Washington gets into one of these messes - which it does a lot - people renew the discussion about how government should be run. “If I ran my company the way they run the government…” The outcome is usually bankruptcy or prison. Should government be run like a business? That’s a debate for another article. But, the surprising thing is many business ARE run like the government. | Many new business owners are unaware of the important obligations that must be upheld AFTER they have formed a new business entity. All too often there are accounts of entrepreneurs starting a business, incorporating that business, then failing to comply with various government imposed formalities and filings. There are many ongoing government requirements that small business owners need to comply with, namely: annual government reports/returns and fees, notice of a name change, notices of change of registered office, directors and in certain jurisdictions, their shareholders. These forms are different than tax related forms such as tax returns, GST/PST filings and payroll deductions. |

The Founders, who fought (and in some cases, died) to leave a country wherein citizens were to rule and the government was supposed to be limited, would be shocked at the size of the behemoth that is the modern federal government. | We have to renew limited government in the United States, or the entire world will enter a new era of darkness the likes of which no one can foresee. There are at least ten limits we could impose on government (and, in some cases, on what I see as quasi-governmental U.S. institutions) that would have a remarkable turn-around impact on our economy - and on our society. And one of the first, if not THE first, is to limit government spending.... |
