Make It Happen in Your Life

In a recent issue of Business Week magazine, I was voted, by their readers, as "the world's most competitive businessperson" and voted by the staff and writers of Business Week as one of the top 10 most competitive businesspeople on the planet. To me, that is a great honor. It also underscores why I emphasize taking the initiative in order to "make it happen in your life."

Media Training Stresses Effective Communication With The Press

When I run media training seminars, I stress that reporters need help from anyone with expertise in the topics that journalists cover. No reporter can prosper without sources. Even the rawest cubs know they must have authoritative quotes to back up both sides of any story dealing with conflict -- political, financial, zoning, hostile takeovers, executive compensation, you name it. Controversy puts their stories on the front page. Where you come in is that you offer to help the business writer at your local daily or regional business periodical, or a byline name you see in one of those niche publications that are prospering as part of the so-called "trade press." React to a story they write, and tell them they can call on you for on-the-record expertise or "background." Media training can help you reach out for that free publicity.

Writing Skills, Media Training Are The Key To Effective Communication

Writing skills aimed at effective business communication must take account of the busy reader, meaning that brevity and clarity go hand in hand. Write to edify. Otherwise, when it comes to effective communication in the professional working world, the only one impressed by your ponderous writing will be you. And if you want to turn a media encounter into a plus, it helps to understand what motivates reporters and their bosses. That's where media training comes in.

How to Own a Business, Instead of a Job

| Every business is owned by someone who took on a risk with their time and money. So I believe that person should be rewarded. Too often as business owners we forget to enjoy ourselves. We forget that we deserve to be paid far more than any of our employees. Every week for week after week we are often challenged financially. We work 60 hours or more a year and possibly take a few weeks holiday when business is quiet and customers aren't buying. If this sounds familiar I am about to reveal exactly what you have been looking for

On the Attack!

At an Inc. magazine forum last week, I found myself on the attack. The target? Me. I was engaging in a moderated dialogue with Seth Godin—not only do I have the utmost respect for him, but we are in agreement a frightening percentage of the time. It seems at times that we use the same adjectives and adverbs to make the same points. Hence, the surprise at some areas of disagreement.

Website Content - It's All About The Why?

Every week I get asked to look at business websites and tell the owners why they're not getting the results they want. Some of these sites are straightforward brochures, others are e-commerce catalogs, and some are those direct-mail-style pitches reminiscent of old mail-order magazine subscription schemes ported-over to the Web. Some have incorporated do-it-yourself audio and video and some even had this media professionally produced; still the results stink. Why?

A is for Advertising

| When I first started Exceptional Thinking, just about everybody told me that I should do some advertising and to be honest, that’s what I thought I should do too. After all, that’s what businesses do to promote their products and services don’t they?
So, dutifully I advertised. First in a business magazine that resulted in nothing, then in a local community magazine – again nothing and then finally (I was learning my lesson at this point) in the local paper. Nothing there either.

How Smart Is Your Local Business Marketing?

Local businesses tend to market locally and with the same approach. A flyer in the weekend paper and maybe some radio ads, and with the same offers week in, week out. This can definitely work, and weekend sales might be all you need to get by. But do you really want to continue just getting by at weekends, or do you want to be a business for every day of the week?

Jumping on the bandwagon – how being reactive can help profile your business (part two)

Last week, I outlined how valuable a resource a newspaper or trade magazine can be for businesses, as piggybacking onto articles and announcements of interest is a great way of securing press coverage and positioning a company or individual as an expert commentator.

They Sure Make Oakland Look Like Paradise!

A few years ago my company sponsored a sales contest (back when companies were allowed to do business by selling things). It was a big deal. First prize was a week-long vacation in Hawaii. Second prize was a week in San Diego. Third prize was a week in Palm Springs. There was also a consolation prize for next-to-last place: a week in Oakland....
