Where You Start Is Not Important

| I was born in L.A. (that's Lower Alabama). Fortunately, I was raised in Yazoo City, Mississippi. I say "fortunately" because Yazoo City, Mississippi, is the geographical center of the world. Many people don't realize it, but you can start in Yazoo City and go anywhere in the world you want to go. The neat thing is, the maximum distance to any place you wish to go is only 12,000 miles.

Making His Golden Greeting: Joyce Hall is Born

Whether it is your birthday, bah mitzvah or anniversary, we all know the feeling we get when someone gives us a greeting card. For Hallmark founder Joyce C. Hall, creating that feeling was his life’s work. A high school dropout from humble origins, Hall worked hard to not only create a business for himself, but to revolutionize an industry.

Lesson #2: High Hopes Help Hold You Up

Hall was 16 years old when he came up with the idea of starting the Norfolk Post Card Company. He was ambitious to say the least. At the time, the market for imported postcards was limited, which would have made his business venture difficult for even the most seasoned of entrepreneurs. Still Hall, a high school dropout with no business experience under his belt, believed whole-heartedly in his idea.

Lesson #4: Do Not Sit Around and Wait for Something to Happen

When Hall first moved to Kansas City in 1910, he had no grand thoughts of becoming a millionaire or even creating a company of any significant success. All he wanted to do was make a living, and he thought Kansas City was the perfect place for a hard-working young man to do just that.

Barack Obama Election Ushers in A Different World

This week I was interviewed by Dominic Carter of New York 1, on his program called Inside City Hall. New York 1 is an all-news program that is popular in New York City, and Dominic Carter is someone I have a great deal of respect for. He should have a national show, but then New York would miss out on his full time and dynamic presence here. He describes me as “a man not known for keeping his opinions to himself” and the interview spanned two consecutive nights.

For most outdoor billboard advertising owners, the biggest challenge is city hall. Without their permit and approval, you cannot build, rent, or maintain your billboard. Since the city wields enormous power, it is essential that you have a good strategy for dealing with them in a manner that can get you what you want.

The Search for Normality

| Recently, I heard about a group of advertising agencies that constantly seek what they call a "normal" city or town. Apparently, what they are looking for is the demographically perfect example of the United States. They spend a great deal of time searching for this elusive pocket of normality. Even when they find a city or town that they deem to be normal, within a year or two they have to move on, because the existing site is-for whatever reason-no longer "normal."

High- and Low-Context Cultures and Power Distances

Literature provides argument that cross-cultural communication is a complex matter. Edward Hall argued much of the human communication is non-verbal and always follows cultural and contextual patterns (Katz, 2006). Hall further argues that there are two key concepts: High-Context v Low-Context and Polychronic v Monochronic (Babel, n.d.).
