DEVELOPING LEADERS WE CAN TRUST
DEVELOPING LEADERS WE CAN TRUST

Don't Bite the Invisible Hand That Feeds You
The anti-capitalist is a curious breed. They take a variety of different positions, but all share one common theme: the general belief that the market is an inherently evil force. They pass along such canards as "The free market doesn't work," "Capitalism is the exploitation of the worker," and "There is no such thing as the American Dream," among many others. They are often found writing for outlets such as The Nation and Harpers, as well as self-righteously demonstrating against free trade agreements and French labor proposals, inter alia.

Disagreeing With Brian Tracy: Self-Discipline Is Not The Most Important Success Principle
In his book The Power of Discipline,Brian Tracy talks about self-discipline being the most important success principle. He went on to define self discipline by quoting Thomas Huxley, who said, "Do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not." But should we just cast aside how we feel about certain actions in business? After all business does affect the lives of all people and their families. Is self-discipline a recipe for capitalism without a conscience? I advocate putting feeling and emotions back into business. It encourages a sense of purpose and meaning back into business. If you chase success without emotion you will never find it because the pursuit of success is about obtaining a feeling of being successful. Success is essentially an emotion.

Earth Day and The Business of Green
Earth Day started as a grassroots movement, now environmental advocacy organizations are being sponsored by corporations and this is helping to change social behavior. Smart businesses are responding to consumers asserting their right to greener products and demanding more sustainable business practices.

Andrew Carnegie Gospel of Wealth
In 1889, steel magnate and self-made millionaire Andrew Carnegie wrote an essay that would go on to change the way many of the world’s richest thought about their wealth and the responsibility that came along with it. “The Gospel of Wealth” was Andrew Carnegie’s attempt to infuse the business world – especially the upper class of self-made millionaires – with a new sense of philanthropy.

China's Boomtowns
The current National Geographic has a fascinating feature on capitalism in China's boomtowns, cities like Lishui that are growing so fast that city planners have razed 108 hilltops to accomodate the runaway growth.

The Decent Thing to Do Is the Smart Thing to Do
Going back 25 years to 1982 and In Search of Excellence, Bob Waterman and I were simply interested in what made for excellent corporate performance.

SMEs in Africa - is capitalism really dead?

Is Capitalism, as Seen by Enterpreneuers now, Good or Bad?
Capitalism is good, and bad! It is bad, because it is in bad need of ammendments in view of the serious financial problems in US and the world for that matter. Do not get me wrong, Capitalism, is still better than other isms. It is good because it is based on free market concept and it is especially potent when it is based in a free democratic society like US. However, there has been a mega revolution. This revolution is the the advent of the Internet that has given extreme power to human capital (as opposed to the potential "things" Capital of the traditional thinking). Internet, with its information available instantly and everwhere has been a game changing effect.

Selling Should Be Like Breathing
How I learned to be a saleman--something I discovered years after I had gotten my Ph.D. degree.

What Is A USP And Why Do I Need One To Sell My Product
Did you know you have a USP? If you don't already know what that is, then you either need to learn what your is...or shut down shop immediately. Everyone's product should have a strongly highlighted USP...if you do not then someone else is probably hijacking most of your buying customers. What is a USP? It is the one thing that makes you stand out from the crowd and makes people want to buy specifically from you.

Good Bookkeeping To Secure Business Capital
How does good bookkeeping help you to secure Business Capital? Well, many observers agree that the global economy will create far more challenging situations than first anticipated. So when the going gets tough in the market place, it is even more imperative for you to have a handle on the financial position of your business

Authentic Capitalism
There is a lot right with business as well as a lot wrong. Lets focus on expanding the good stuff and learning from the rest.

Adults Ambushed by the 'More' Mentality
There's a paradoxical effect that afflicts us: when we sell our talents, they lose their meaning. Yet, we desire the rewards that financial success brings. What price are we willing to pay for it?

The Greening of Procurement Revisited
“In our rapidly evolving capitalist economies, where it is in the natural order of things for corporations to devour competing corporations, for industries to carve up and digest other industries, one emerging form of capitalism with a fork – sustainable capitalism – would certainly constitute real progress.” From Cannibals With Forks – The Triple Bottom Line of 21st Century Business, By John Elkington (Capstone Publishing, Oxford, 1997) Do Cannibals With Forks Constitute Progress? So started the introduction to one of my most popular white papers titled, The Greening of Procurement: How Social Consciousness is Re-Shaping Procurement Practices.

“Money Isn’t Important to Me” ~ REALLY?
When someone says, “Money isn’t important to me”, or “I don’t do it for the money”, you know they have no money. People who have earned their money and created wealth understand the importance of money.

A Four Letter Word That Will Transform Your Business
I use to get annoyed by Valentines Day. I considered it a cash grab perpetrated by the greeting card, floral, lingerie and confectionary industries to get American consumers to pay $18.6 billion (according to the National Retail Federation) in order to materially express our love for our partners. A ritualized example of commercial hucksterism.

Don't Protest the Rich, Get Rich
The rich would love nothing more than for everyone move up an income or wealth level. It is ridiculous to think the the richest 1% want to hold others down and are the supposed oppressors of all other financial groups. The intense protest against wealthy groups as the cause of those that 'don't have' is becoming a disgusting show of irresponsibility and a demonstration of ignorance at the best.

The Heart of Business
For decades, I have been a proponent of, and keynoter in the field of, Spirituality in the Workplace. There seem to be different names for it these days: the heart of business, corporate social responsibility, conscious capitalism, patient capitalism, bringing the heart to work. What it means, underneath all of the words, is that we recognize that we have a responsibility to care about each other, and the earth, and run our businesses in a way that end up with a net plus - not just increased profit.

Free Market Capitalism Is The Worst Economic System
Sir Winston Churchill famously quipped: "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." With apologies to Mr. Churchill, I would suggest a modernization of that quote based on today's political/economic environment in the United States. You hear a lot about the "failure of capitalism," and how bad it is compared with the socialist Utopia long sought by progressives; but in reality, free-market capitalism far outpaces any other economic system.

Thank God For Godless Communism
Though many so-called progressives would love to separate them, from my point of view there are two other continua which march more-or-less in lockstep with communism-capitalism. These are statism-liberty, and atheism-faith. If I correctly remember my eighth-grade history (a subject which is, due to the progressivism currently under discussion, no longer much taught), capitalism has as its running-buddies individual liberty and faith in God. Communism's pals, in stark contrast, are authoritarian control of individuals by the state, and denial of the Almighty in favor of an allegiance to the state that amounts to idolatry.

What Is Real Capitalism?
When the financial crisis of 2008 hit, we saw how state-managed capitalism works, suggests Mike Farrell with aspenIbiz. Read this short post is it will reveal how most real wealth created since the Industrial Revolution has come from the creative destruction of real capitalism.
