Successful People Create Their Dream and Make it a Reality
| |
| Develop a clarity of purpose for your career and life. Your clarity of purpose and direction is where it all begins. To develop your personal clarity or purpose you need to do three things. First, define what success means to you. Second, create a vivid mental image of you as a success. Third, clarify your personal values. Once you define what success means to you personally, I suggest that you develop a clear mental picture of you as a success. This image should be as vivid as you can you make it. |

Success and Your Personal Mission and Vision

| Successful people define a clarity of purpose and direction for their lives and careers. Your clarity of purpose and direction should include both a personal mission (your purpose) and a personal vision (your direction). Your mission is your reason for living, why you are on this earth. It is unlikely to change over the long run. Your vision is a short or medium term goal that defines the direction you will take over the next three to five years. New to the job
| |
| This article has been written to assist new-leaders of local government. However, the information is just as useful for anyone who has moved into a management role. One small step for you: One giant leap for your Organization
| |
| Times are tough in the business world; very tough in some countries. Regular reports indicate that this is the worst Global Financial Crisis weve experienced since WW11. It has made leaders stop and rethink the way they have been doing things. It has made them reevaluate their systems and processes in order to ascertain just how successful they really are. Performance Development Programs (PDPs) are one way that your organization can improve workplace productivity. Implementing new systems and processes is laborious at first; however setting up and using PDPs is essential if you are serious about increasing business productivity. They dont have to be complicated, in fact the simpler the better. When done properly they are a valuable resource for not only you but for your employees as well. |

You need one, I need one: we all need a break
| |
| In the current economic climate the mantra is to work harder and harder. This is a global phenomenon and we are told it regularly. There is no time for a break; you just have to keep pushing yourself. Everyone else is doing it - so of course you must follow suit. It's expected that this behavior will impact on productivity in all the right ways and that the organisation will go from strength-to-strength. Those in leadership are not immune from this pressure. It is not only difficult to continue to work harder and harder, it is impossible because there comes a point when the bone has no more meat on it. While sustainable for awhile, over time issues start to emerge. Pressured, exhausted leaders can experience a loss of confidence, self esteem, lack of clarity and mental and/or physical health issues can appear... |

Enlist Your Self Control and Achieve Even More
| |
| Self-control is defined as control of oneself or the ability to master one's desires and impulses. Philosophically speaking self-control could be described as the exertion of one's own will. Psychologically, self-control usually refers to a persons self-perception, belief system, as well as the ability to set boundaries on their own behavior. Giving Advice: Come again when you can't stay so long!
| |
| Whether you are the giver or receiver of advice, timing appears to be more critical than the truth; this is the principle behind the quote, "The truth out of season bears no fruit." Unfortunately, most of us didn't get the memo about how to tell advice time. I remember the first time I had to fly, I asked my cousin, an experienced flyer, for advice. He said, "Get a window seat because if it's your time to go, at least you will see it coming." His advice wasn't elegant or comforting, but I took it-and thousands of flown miles later, I still remember it as the ugly truth.

The Accidental Manager: In some train wrecks you may be the train!
| |
| Many management promotions are one dimensional, prompted by seniority, non management performance or a recommendation. This is problematic, because great engineers dont always make a great engineering manager; leading is a very different skill set.
When people are placed in management positions haphazardly, it can create a collision between reality and ego. The result is a wreck of denial, manifesting as toxic behaviors: micro-managing, controlling, passive aggressiveness, chaos, bullying, poor judgments and constantly deflecting issues to Human Resources to avoid responsibility. |

Live So That You May...
| |
| I know I want to live my life in a way that I would want to life the same life all over again. Thats the way ideas get re-circulated. And that reminds me of another great quotation: "There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We just take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn, and they create new and curious combinations. We keep turning making new patterns, but they are the same old pieces of glass that have been in use throughout all the years." --Mark Twain So Ill probably take Nietzsches quotation, refine it a little and make it my own. |

If the IT person lacks the skills needed to make business and strategic decisions, his/her path usually ends at the Sr. Engineer/Team leader or IT manager role. |

Seven Essential Principles for Managing Power and Politics
| |
| There are seven essential principles for managing power and politics in organizations. They are based on the philosophy of Niccolo Machiavelli, the classic theorist in the field. Not even skilled and relatively sophisticated people can succeed in management -- and be seen as leaders -- without internalizing these principles, although they may have minor short-term successes. In the long run, they will be undermined because they can't build and keep alliances, protect themselves from the grapevine or influence top management. |

Running mentoring programs can be difficult, time consuming, and often frustrating. |

Do the Opposite....
| |
| I have never been a fan of "normal. Even as a little kid I was drawn to things that were different. I wanted a bicycle that stood out from the crowd not more expensive or even better just different. I built my first car from the ground up so I could have something that would stand out. I moved on to college options that were different, completing bachelors and masters degrees with no debt. |

Why are you burying your talent?
| |
| A miser, to make sure he controlled all his wealth, sold all that he had and converted it into a great lump of gold, which he hid in a hole in the ground. Then he repeatedly went to visit and inspect it. This roused the curiosity of one of his workmen, who, suspecting that there was a treasure, when his masters back was turned, went to the spot, and stole it away. When the miser returned and found the place empty, he wept and tore his hair. |

Remove Mindreading from the Equation
| |
| As a high performer working in a fast-paced environment, you might fall into the trap of "moving too fast." Because you have already thought through an issue and how to address it, you might leave out some important information in what you communicate to your audience because YOU KNOW what you mean and how you got there. However, the person on the receiving end may need clarification about your conclusion, assumptions and supporting data. They can't read your mind. |

I have tried buying wholesale collectibles on ebay to resell and also affiliate websites but found the long hours and no return on investment in the beginning hard to overcome. I could not get any traction going and would quit before I felt I ever got started. Would you recommend a business loan to get things going faster? |

Several years ago , author of , told a small group of us author wannabes something that revolutionized my approach to writing. He said, Everyone I meet wants to write a book. I tell them, Write your book. Do a great job. Now youre 10% finished. The remaining 90% consists of marketing, promoting, developing ancillary products, etc.

The adjacent possibility
| |
| A few years ago biologist and researcher Stuart Kauffman came up with a term he called the adjacent possible. Its a complex theory but heres a simple way to look at it. Think of being in a house that magically expands with every door you open. You walk into a room and see three more doors leading out. Once you open one of those doors you enter another room with another three doors leading to yet new rooms. Keep opening doors and eventually youll realize youre in an expanding palace. |

That dog wont hunt
| |
| Here we are at the end of March already. I was talking with a friend the other day about an old farmers adage we used to anticipate in March regarding the weather: In like a lamb, out like a lion. Or In like a lion, out like a lamb. The expectation was that if we had harsh winter weather at the beginning of March we would have mild weather at the end and vice versa. I have no idea why that is expected but it reminds me of all the little clichs that we accept as reality. As farmers we also used to cite, Red in the morning, sailors warning; red at night, sailors delight. |

Would you hire this person?
| |
| This addresses a pet peeve of mine. And thats the Objective on resumes.
Here is a recent example on a resume submitted for my review:
To support the growth and profitability of an organization that provides challenge, encourages advancement, and rewards achievement with the opportunity to utilize my experience, skills, and proven abilities.
Sounds great would you like to hire this person? But what do you know about this person? Is he/she a candidate for flipping hamburgers or for a CEO position? Does he have skills in supervising, organizing, planning, selling, marketing, etc? Is she proficient in any computer skills? We dont know. This Objective tells us absolutely nothing about the person. It was a total waste of time on the applicants part. |

Its funny though the more I work on my business plan, the more interviews and job opportunities come open to me. Im not sure if its a sign that Im really headed on the right track (and the other jobs are distractions) or if its a sign that theres something else out there for me (just a different job, not my own business). The world doesnt pay for what you know, but for.
| |
| Okay Ill go ahead and finish the sentence:
The World Doesnt Pay You For What You Know but for What You Do. I guess we would all acknowledge the truth of that and yet I am amazed at the number of people I run into who are bogged down in analyzing, learning, planning and organizing when what they really need to do is take action. I think more than anything else thats what separates winners from losers the winners take action. |
