Lesson #5: Religion and Business Can Go Hand in Hand

“No matter what I did, I knew I had five priorities in life,” says Monaghan, “physical and mental health, as well as the social, the spiritual and the financial. But the most important thing I could be was a good Catholic. That is my No. 1 priority. There's no compromising that.”

Lesson #2: Don’t Dream About Being Good, Dream About Being the Best!

When he was a young boy, struggling with the loss of his father and the difficulties of life in an orphanage, Monaghan spent his time reading biographies of great men who had come before him. Abraham Lincoln, a poor farm boy from Illinois, had used hard work and determination to become the President of the United States. Why couldn’t he do the same, Monaghan wondered? Or in reading Sears catalogues, Monaghan would dream about what it would be like to have a life where he could actually afford everything within its glorious pages.

Can Emerging Markets Follow China's FDI Growth Recipe?

| China's ability to attract massive amounts of foreign investment does not derive entirely from its economic growth rate or the size of its population, observed Stephen J. Kobrin, Professor of Multinational Management, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA. Rather, China leads the developing world in liberalizing its foreign investment policies, he noted. Felipe Larra Bascu Professor of Economics, Catholic University of Chile, Chile, challenged this view, saying he believed that it was China's large marketplace, high growth rate and low costs rather than its investment policies driving FDI. Between these extremes, Paul A. Laudicina, Managing Director, A.T. Kearney, USA, said that interviews with his firm's clients revealed that it was both the size of China's marketplace and its policies that were luring investment.

Company Vision, Mission, and Values, What’s the Difference?

I was asked recently by a friend to explain the difference between a vision statement, a mission statement, and a values statement. I must confess that I struggled to answer the question as many organizations seem to use these terms interchangeably. Then my parochial school education kicked in - I had heard a lot about people with a mission when at Catholic school - they called them “Missionaries”. So what was their mission? It could be described as to carry out the “Vision of Jesus of Nazareth” (he was certainly a visionary) and to do this in accordance with the values he espoused.

FRANCHISE NETWORKING SESSIONS : LEARN AND INTERACT WITH SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISERS.

We had a very interesting franchise networking meet last evening at the Catholic Club organized by the Franchising Association of India. Having reached out to over 200 franchisers from Bangalore for this Evening, i think that these meets are a great way for companies exploring franchising / young franchisors on the one hand and for mature franchisors on the other. We had industry leaders speaking from their own experiences, and how they dealt with their business challenges in general and franchising in particular. We will have many such Franchise Meets over the next couple of months across the country and build up a discussion on how we can strengthen franchising for every business owner / company who are exploring franchising or want to franchise or are already franchising and need some solutions or the other.
