Marketing Insensitives for 2009

| Approximately two years ago I first wrote about “Marketing Insensitives.” At the time, I had received a call from a telemarketer offering me some “marketing insensitives” to purchase a product. Yes, she really said this! She was not being clever; she just couldn’t pronounce “incentive.”
But, Marketing Insensitives do exist! They are the unfortunate, not-thought-through, ridiculous, dumb things that businesses do that drive customers away. Here is another:

| After being forced to close down his first solo venture, Penney went to Longmont, Colorado to work for Thomas Callahan and Guy Johnson, two men who would forever change his life. Callahan and Johnson owned a chain of dry goods stores in Colorado and Wyoming called the Golden Rule stores. Impressed with his work ethic, when Callahan and Johnson were drawing up plans to open a new store in Kemmerer, Wyoming, Penney was their first choice to head it up. What is the difference between Supply Chain and Value Chain?
My Response:
To begin, the reference to supply or “value” chain is a misnomer in that it implies a sequential architecture. This is a term that is on its way out as an organization’s supply “practice” is actually centered on the synchronization of diverse stakeholders sometimes spanning multiple supply networks. This is an important distinction given the impact that real-world synchronization has on theories such as value chains.
That said the concept of the value chain was first introduced by Michael Porter in 1985 in his book, Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance.

| According to QBR, Brisbane-based gourmet food chain, Pizza Capers Franchise has plans to launch 80 stores by end 2009. Franchise founders Scott Geiszler and Anthony Russo launched the chain in Brisbane in 2000. There are plans to expand in India and Singapore besides the nine stores which will be launched over the next 12 weeks and the first store in Adelaide. |

| If you happen to read the restaurant news magazines and internet articles, you will notice that many restaurant franchisors are "more than interested" in Local Store Marketing. They realize that the successful franchisees in their chain have demonstrated skill at building business through networking in their local community.
And they have noticed that institutional advertising is largely in-effective and expensive.
For experts and students of Local Store Marketing, the secret is that Local Store Marketing has been around for quite a while. Nothing is new in the LSM world for those who have practiced and studied the technique. If you read about a tactic or think of a new way to attract customers, chances are that I've seen it.

Organization Structure Limits or Liberates High Performance

| The CEO of a national retailer was very frustrated. His face grew noticeably redder as he told me how he had set up each store as a profit center and was attempting to hold store managers and their regional managers accountable for profitability. But when a store under performed the store manager would show that head office buyers were forcing them into stocking the wrong merchandise for their particular mix of customers. Or they would claim that the marketers hadn't put together the right campaign for their local market.
