I’m OK, You’re Not So Hot (personality types)
| |
| Personality typing is NOT about putting people in boxes. Every single human being is unique, there will never be another of any of us ever again. Not even our children are exact copies of us. They are bits of us for sure; bits of the other gender parent; a complex mix of where they were born (place); where in the family they were born; how they were brought up; what values they were taught; what religious and social teachings they were introduced to in their early years; where they were educated; what friends they chose in school, and a million other subtle influencers in-between. And each one of us, regardless of all of the above, also have that unique ingredient that is simply, us. |

HANDLING CHANGE
| |
| Change is not a destination, it is a journey.
For many business owners getting their staff or themselves to handle change and perhaps do things in a different or new way represents a massive challenge.
If you consider that people make change, people fear change and people resist change then when we want to implement change our systems or processes or methods of doing business then we must first consider the people who are going to be involved in the change.

Role of Leadership in Planning
| |
| Executives love to talk about planning… most complain their processes don’t work very well. Harvard Business Review reports that only 11% of CEOs believe that strategic planning is worth the effort. Most planning processes are too complex, and only document decisions already made. CEOs have the responsibility to make their planning processes effective; I believe the key is to keep the processes simple and focused. |

Financial Accounting: Don’t Reinvent the Wheel When Accounting for Your Business’ Future
| |
| Every small business owner or manager must learn to differentiate between those business processes that must evolve and those that should remain stable. Financial accounting is one of these. A complete overview of the basics of financial accounting is way beyond the scope of this article. However, by sharing a few standard accounting concepts with you, I hope I’ll motivate you to perhaps take a little bit closer look at the financial statements your CPA slides across your desk next month.

Business Continuity Planning - What Happens If Something Happens To You?
| |
| Many small business owners end up being the ‘centre’ of their business. All their passwords and accesses are locked away in their head or their personal password list and if something goes wrong, there is no-one who can step in and make sure the business remains operational.
Have you considered how your processes will cope if you, as the ‘centre’ of your business, will operate if you are incommunicado or just incapable of ‘being there’?
Seriously – this is a big thing. Recently, I was affected by the need to make a certain change to one of my systems and the ONLY person who could authorise the change was not available – and NO ONE knew when they would be available.
My only option at that point was to transfer my business to another supplier that could allow the change to occur…. |

Change Management is an Oxymoron
| |
| A dubious consulting industry and "profession" has developed, claiming to provide "change management" services. Those two words make about as much sense together as "holy war", "non-working mother", "mandatory option", and "political principles". Many of the books, models, theories, and "processes" on change have come from staff support people, consultants, or academics who've never built a business or led an organization. |

| The next time you are ready to point the finger at your sales team and externalize why something can't get done, look at yourself first.
