When Seth Godin and Co Founder Megan Casey Editor in Chief, Gil Hilderbrand Jr. Chief Engineer, Corey Brown COO, Kimberly Dawn Wells, Community and Charity. High Tech Helping Hands in Haiti
| |
| When a spirit of goodwill prompts our thinking and when united effort goes to work on a common problem, the results can be most gratifying. Aligning your brand with a charity, more than just PR
| |
| Let's face it, people like to associate themselves with businesses and brands that support causes.
When embarking on a charity initiative, consider the sort of giving that you'd like to be involved in and why you're doing it. If corporate charity is undertaken as an obligation or as a means of self-promotion, this will show through in your efforts, and no matter how great your giving, it will be seen as less than sincere. |

Do Your Homework (Really)
| |
| Before I meet with any new prospect I've been thinking of introducing myself to, I make damn sure I do my homework. And when I say homework, I mean more than checking to see if the company has a website by typing www.amazon.com to do research on a marketing executive at Amazon. Sure, you should be up-to-date with the major news about the prospect's company. But what you really want to know is more personal. Think of it this way: A good salesperson does research on companies; a great salesperson does research on people. |

In the Thrall of Procrastination
| |
| The last weeks of August are bittersweet for me as I say farewell to summer, my favourite season. In this month’s newsletter I share some insights about to-do lists prompted by an impromptu closet makeover. I hope you enjoy the results of cleaning out your to-list and getting it ready for the ‘new year’ as much as I enjoyed cleaning out my closet. |

How not to make a prospecting call
| |
| I've been selling for more than 20 years and have learnt many things by trial and error, common sense and staying aware of market conditions and how customers like to buy. There is no shortage of information out there about prospecting, sales, etc.
However, I am still amazed at how people don't know how to prospect successfully, given the plethora of calls we receive at home in the evenings, with very much similar outcomes to my experience. So why do many businesses still get this part so wrong? |

Make Your Marketing Personal
| |
| It used to be that only big companies could afford to create a marketing message that was highly visible: newspaper ads, direct mail, television, radio, skywriting, sponsorships, etc. But modern technology allows people to create one-offs inexpensively: email blasts, your own ink-jet printer, local digital printing, or even personal 3D fabricators. |

| What is social responsibility? The attempt of a business to balance its commitments to groups and individuals in its environment, including customers, other businesses, employees, investors and local communities. WHY AND HOW TO MAKE MAKING CHOICES THAT ARE IN YOUR BEST INTEREST A DAILY OCCURRENCE
| |
| The dictionary defines choice as “the act of choosing; selection; the power, right, or liberty to choose; option; an alternative”. We sometimes hear ourselves or others say, “I have no choice,” when really what we mean is “I feel obligated.” There is always a choice. Sometimes one must choose between two unattractive alternatives and often times making the choice that is best for you carries with it repercussions from friends or coworkers, but that isn’t the same as actually having no choice at all. I encourage and challenge you not to confuse hard choices with no choices. |

Tithing By Giving You WILL Receive
| |
| In the book "The One Minute Millionaire", Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen discuss proven techniques and provide useful tools (in the form of Ahas), for becoming an Enlightened Millionaire (TM). One of the Ahas is about tithing, or "sharing the wealth" in layman terms. Tithing is when a monetary donation (typically a tenth of one's income or tithe) is made to a charity and/or church. Enlightened Millionaires follow two rules of thought regarding tithing. First, that abundance comes from making others better off. Second, the primary reason for obtaining wealth is to be able to give more of it away. In fact, Enlightened Millionaires DO commit to tithe the first 10% of their income. |

Just Say No and See Your Business Grow

| I guess it's just human nature to want others to like us and think well of us. We are brought up to conform, be polite and meet the expectations of the important or powerful people in our lives. We women are especially indoctrinated with these expectations and sometimes we feel we're letting people down if we say NO. |

How Do I Fire My Son Toby? My Wife Won’t Allow It
| |
| "I love Toby. He's my oldest son, he's Vice President of Sales but he just doesn't get it. My daughter should be running this business, she's brilliant but she's married to a surgeon and doesn't want anything to do with wholesale distribution. She's quite happy with all the charity work she is involved in. My youngest son has potential but he's only twenty two and just isn't ready to take over a 0 million dollar distribution business. Two events have occurred recently that are wearing on me a little. First, I transferred 75% of my stock equally to my three kids, 25% each. All three receive a salary although my daughter rarely appears at the office due to her charity work. The second event occurred after I hired a succession consultant to help me transition into retirement. He told me that Toby was incompetetent. |

Registered charities perform valuable work in our communities.
| |
| Donations in the form of cash or gifts in kind made to a registered charity or other qualified donees may reduce your taxes. A list of registered charities is provided on CRA's website. The receipt for your gift should include the value of the consideration given. If you receive something in return such as an event ticket, for example, you must deduct the value of this "advantage", as CRA calls it, from the eligible amount of your donation. The other important thing to keep in mind is that your donation receipt should include the registration number of the charity. Otherwise, it is not an official donation receipt for tax purposes. |
