The Coffee King: Howard Schultz is Born

“I wanted to be in charge of my own destiny,” says Howard Schultz. “It may be a weakness in me: I'm always wondering what I'll do next. Enough is never enough.” Schultz used this weakness to his advantage, taking the U.S. by storm with his vision of a coffee shop the likes of which the country had never seen before. Today, as a so-called ‘third home’, Starbucks has revolutionized not only the coffee industry but also society at large.

Say the name Starbucks and the first thing most people will think of is coffee. However, many industry analysts argued it was that very fact that was one of the major obstacles standing in the way of CEO Howard Schultz’s dream to create the most recognizable and respected brand in the world. How was Schultz ever going to be able to capture the coffee market in China, a country of tea drinkers, or Japan or Taiwan, they asked?

Howard Schultz Bio

The Howard Schultz bio is not necessarily a story of innovation. After all, Howard Schultz was not the first person to ever think of establishing gourmet coffee bars, where coffee was served in cups, not beans, and people could come to meet and relax; he had gotten the idea after visiting Milan, Italy, on a family vacation. Nor was Howard Schultz the original founder of Starbucks; he built upon the success of three men and their coffeehouse in Seattle, Washington.

Why Put Off Until Tomorrow What You Can Do Today

Ivy Ledbetter Lee was considered to be the father of public relations, even teaching the first PR class at New York University in 1912. He was a consultant for many business moguls of that time: Westinghouse, Lindbergh, Chrysler, and Charles M. Schwab. During his consultancy work for Bethlehem Steel, founded and run by Charles M. Schwab, Lee told president Schwab that, with all Bethlehem Steel accomplished and had to offer, he and his executives should have more effective management skills. Lee told Schwab, “"I can increase your people's efficiency – and your sales – if you will allow me to spend fifteen minutes with each of your executives."

Charles Schwabs Personal Life

The name Charles Robert Schwab may ring a bell. He is the founder and the CEO of the Charles Schwab Corporation and is famously known as a self-made man who is now worth over $6 billion. He is definitely an entrepreneur to look up to. However, despite his huge fortune, Charles Schwab’s personal life was not always as glamorous as it may seem today. Like many people who start their own business, Schwab never realized that he would become such a huge success.

The Power of the Word

Frequently we become so pragmatic we fail to be effective. A number of years ago the editor of the Dallas Morning News pointed out to the sports writers that “Bill” was not a suitable substitute for “William,” and “Charlie” was not a suitable substitute for “Charles.” Taking him literally, one of the sports writers, in the heyday of Doak Walker of Southern Methodist University, wrote about an important game. In his story he pointed out that in the third quarter Doak Walker had left the game with a “Charles horse.” I think you’ll agree that the story lost some meaning with the use of the word “Charles.”

Best Book on Painting Tips for Artists I Ever Read

| TITLE: BEST BOOK ON PAINTING TIPS FROM CHARLES WEBSTER HAWTHORNE (1872-1930)
As An artist and a writer, I study all the time the masters in those fields, those who struggled and won. Why? Because I am still struggling and need their tools to win.
I recently read Charles Webster Hawthorne on Painting, collected by Mrs. Charles. W. Hawthorne with an Introduction by Edwin Dickinson, an Appreciation by Hans Hoffman, and Biographical Notes by Joseph Hawthorne, his son.
These forty tools I gleaned from Hawthorne’s tips to help his students create more masterful paintings. In working to understand these forty tools, I felt like one of his students. I wish the same for you.
