Getting my beauty sleep between emails
The ubiquity of email and our reliance on the web as an information source is well ingrained in our lives. We have little tolerance for slow servers and are easily frustrated when we can’t just hit ‘send’ with instant results. I recently had ample opportunity to sit and reflect on the speed of communication and how it’s changed so much in our lives. It was the change in rooms, however, that helped me change my point of view.

ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE THE NEW LANGUAGE OF MANAGEMENT
Enterprise Architecture is rapidly becoming to management thinking what mathematics is to the engineering of physical systems. The primary purpose of Enterprise Architecture is to make the invisible visible. Management Consultants that are not already versed in Enterprise Architecture appear to be scrambling to learn its principles.

Sloppy naming
If you've got more than one product or service, you have a problem. You need to decide if there's going to be an architecture to the way you name things. General Motors has a division, Chevrolet. Chevrolet makes cars, and each car has a name (Corvette, Impala). They have an architecture in place that makes some things clear very quickly.

How does the complexity theory apply to business? (A Brief Dialogue)
Member Question: Has anyone applied complexity theory to business in a practical way? Asheville, U.S. My Response: The chaos theory and butterfly effect are interesting concepts in terms of the “complexity” of business. Over a number of years and through funding from the Government of Canada’s Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) Program I developed a theory called strand commonality. In the area of supply chain practice for example (although the term “chain” is a misnomer in that it implies a sequential architecture instead of the synchronized architecture that represents the dynamic characteristics of different stakeholders within the real-world), one seeks to understand the unique operating attributes of individual stakeholders using an agent-based model.

Sarah Palin and Job Interviews
First of all, let me start out by saying that this article is merely my observation and opinion, nothing more. Some people are a great interview. They're bright, attractive, articulate, charming and so doggone irressistable you can't help but like them. They make a great first impression, so you hire them.

Frankly My Dear, I Don't Give a Damn
Indifference is a fantastic personal characteristic to have if you’re the roguish leading man in a sweeping Civil War tale, but it’s not quite as charming if you’re a career salesperson trying your best to generate business in a slow economy. The funny thing is that many of us have adopted a Rhett Butler style of prospecting that is highly ineffective - particularly in these challenging times.

Two-Sided Answers
The room was lovely, the bed inviting, the architecture interesting, and the philosophy appealing. That was my impression as we checked into a newly minted green-hotel in a resort town where we were eager to spend time relaxing.

The Marketing Pyramid: How to Find Your Ideal Client
If you were trying to find your soul mate through a dating site, a description such as “looking for someone 35-45 in Seattle who drives a red car” isn’t going to find you your Prince or Princess Charming. The same is true with your marketing materials. To find those people who get you excited about your business and what you’re doing, you have to laser in on your “ideal client.”

Are You Giving Thanks, or Begging For Dimes?
Ah, yes, the holiday season is upon us. That means that this is the time to spend with friends and family, giving thanks, gifts, and appreciation for all that they give us. It’s also the season for something that is charming at its start, but – if we’re all honest – can get kind of annoying by Christmas – the Salvation Army bell ringers at every supermarket and shopping center. It seems to me that there is a parallel in the sales world.

Invite vs. Incite: What’s Wrong With Most Marketing Today
Pretend your business is a party and ask your clients to come be your guest and enjoy themselves. Make sure everyone feels welcome and comfortable, and that you’re being charming and engaging. Talk “with” them instead of “at” them. You’ll see the energy turn around and I’d be willing to bet that you’ll all start having more fun in the process.
