Developing Leadership Effectiveness
What advice would you offer others who are trying to develop their leadership effectiveness?

Best Western India Franchise to add 10 more hotels by 2009 end
In a bid to expand its footprint in the Indian market, Best Western India has plans to foray into metro cities. Best Western has plans to add 10 more hotels to its Indian portfolio, which will add around 800 rooms to the existing inventory by 2009 end. At present, the company has 22 hotels under management and franchise agreements. However, 18 hotels in different locations including Goa, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, Ooty, Mysore, Jalandhar and Ludhiana are in the final stages of negotiation with developers. Besides, Best Western India plans to open a hotel management institute attached to its Bhubaneswar hotel, in the next two years.

By my new way of calculating it, Apple is the number one computer vendor in the US
Maybe it would be cheating but what if iPhones and iPod touches were tallied into the total for Macs sold during a quarter? Imagine what that would do for the Mac’s market share.

Analyst says we shouldn’t expect revamped Mac desktops anytime soon—but I beg to differ
Trip Chowdhry, a Global Equities Research analyst, says you shouldn’t expect revamped Mac desktops anytime soon—at least ones with big changes. Tough economic times, a shrinking desktop market and strong notebook sales make this an unwise move for Apple, he told Wired. However, not releasing new desktops is a terrible idea—and totally against Apple’s “DNA,” according to the Sellers Research group.

Jobs' departure, though hopefully temporary, had to happen sooner or later
Whether or not Steve Jobs is leaving Apple temporarily or not (and I'm betting this is the beginning of a long-term transfer of leadership), the iconic leader will leave the company sooner or later. And it's time people accepted this.

TIDE Series-Taking Shape
This week we've spent time working ont he next TIDE Innovation Series event which is slated for October 11th and will feature with the Chief Operating Officer of Nakumatt Holdings. When I look back at how TIDE came about and what it's becoming I can't help but be amazed, like a small seed that grows into a giant tree this event is beginning to take shape.

Giving Back
Corporate America reached a new low yesterday when the chief executive officer of Nestle S.A. asked Boston College’s Chief Executives’ Club “What the hell have we taken away from society by being a successful company that employs people? Companies shouldn’t feel obligated to give back to the community.”

Why External Diagonal Career Moves are Rare
An external diagonal career move occurs when someone moves into a more senior or broader role in a different organisation in either the same or a different industry. For example, if a Marketing Manager in an organisation moves to become a General Manager or Chief Operating Officer or CEO in a different organisation, I call this a diagonal move. They are rare. Most of the time people move either vertically or horizontally.

There’s a slow, slow train comin’ up around the bend: Epilog for the Ariba Interviews
Under the headline “Ariba is in demand claims finance chief” (refer to the link of the same name in the Web Resources section at the conclusion of this post), Ariba’s chief financial officer Ahmed Rubaie claimed that “a 71% leap in subscription software revenues is proof that Ariba has firmly transitioned itself into an on-demand technology company.” My initial reaction was . . . “well, that only took a year and a half.”

Successful Business Plans
If you are the Chief Executive Officer, what must you have in place for business plans to work?

Why Is the Chief People Officer Missing from the C-Suite?
The CEO, CFO, CIO and the list continues are recognized acronyms for executives in the C (Chief) suites. Yet what makes companies successful is people. So where is the Chief People Officer?

The "Daily Negotiator" Mindset
Now is the time to rethink your attitude to negotiation in general. When I ask most executives about negotiating, most come back with stories of triumphant salary discussions and closing big deals. Not Dawn M. Pagano, Vice President, and Chief Operating Officer of the Employer Account Group, at Medco Health Solutions, Inc. She believes that negotiation occurs anytime we are influencing others, whether sharing ideas or in a meeting.

Is Your CFO REALLY a Chief Financial Officer
No offense to all those dedicated, competent, excellent performing CFO’s out there but I have to admit that I run into a number of individuals in business that hold the respectable title of CFO (Chief Financial Officer) that shouldn’t be the Chief of anything. Oh, some of these CFO impersonators do a good job as an accountant and some may even qualify as a Controller. But, there are some that just shouldn’t hold the title of Chief Financial Officer. “The chief financial officer (CFO) is a corporate officer primarily responsible for managing the financial risks of the corporation. This officer is also responsible for financial planning and record-keeping, as well as financial reporting to higher management. The CFO is also responsible for analysis of data”. So…… ask yourself; is your CFO really a Chief Financial Officer.

Title Inflation Emerges With A Vengeance
Suddenly, title inflation is everywhere. I’ve seen more business cards or email sigs lately with adjectives like “executive” or “senior” or “senior executive” or “special” or “chief” in front of more traditional titles (e.g. “vice president”). The “chief” one is especially bizarre since it’s not always obvious whether the CSO is a “Chief Sales Officer” or a “Chief Security Officer” which in and of itself is a problem.
