Does Size Truly Matter?
Evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of large vs. small franchise systems. Sometimes size does matter. When talking about a piece of chocolate cake – bigger is always better. When evaluating new cell phones – smaller gets the nod. In franchising, there are some advantages to being part of a large franchise system and other advantages to joining a small system. The question is not, “Which is better?” but “Which is better for you?”

A FiveStep Plan to Overcome Procrastination
Dear Jane, Why can't I ever finish anything? Why do I procrastinate so much? Most of us think we are simply lazy when we procrastinate. But the truth is that the cause of most procrastination isn’t laziness; it’s fear. We may be afraid that the task at hand is overwhelming or we may be afraid of failing at it. These are the two biggest fears that tend to keep us in approach/avoidance mode. Here are five key ways to get past your resistance and get “it” done, whatever the “it” is:

Obstacle or Opportunity? You decide.
Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals. - Hannah More

Good Marketing is Like a Bad Habit
You know those bad habits we get. Like raiding the chocolate biscuits during late night TV shows. Or slouching we when we sit. Or biting our fingernails.

A CEOs Thoughts on Collaboration
I had breakfast with Matt Blumberg – the CEO of Return Path – yesterday. I’ve worked with Matt for at least six years and love the way his brain works. During my frustrating quest for the best chocolate croissant in Boulder (so far all of the ones I’ve found appear to be exactly the same – I’m guessing there is one chocolate croissant distributor in town) we talked some about “collaboration.”

Doing your marketing for free
I’m a great believer in doing things for free – without compromising on quality or getting what you want. In this day and age, I think it’s perfectly possible to have your cake and eat it, but you’re going to need to think about things in a different way. Here’s how:

Productivity through Chocolate Reflections
So there I sat, staring at the candy and trying not to open the first one. (My will power diminishes after eating one.) Of course, I gave in and ate my first one. I was surprised to see that on the inside of every wrapper are little messages. It is like a chocolate fortune cookie! With every one I opened, I found another productivity thought. "Get Your Feet Massaged" Now doesn't that sound wonderful? Chocolate and a massage! But there is a productivity thought here. So many of us work and work and never take time out to recharge. That is what this message is telling us.

"We May be Poor but..."
It started off so innocently which made the contrast that much more painful. We were kidding around as our family often does at night. Ann had offered to make chocolate chip cookies -- favorites of Amber and mine. Then we discovered we were out of chocolate chips. It was close to 9 pm and I wasn't excited about going out, so Ann suggested we make oatmeal cookies, then we realized we were also out of cranberries. In the midst of all this she said, "This is how poor people live..." or something to that effect. That's it -- 6 words that felt to me like a 250 pound thug had struck me in my solar plexus.

Lesson #2: “In life you’ve got to put all you’ve got into it”
“My mental arithmetic’s always been good. I always try and make one and one equal three,” says Fox. “Most of the people look at one and one making two but I try to work out how to put some icing on the cake.”

5 Key Steps That Will Turn Product Into Profit
If you have ever been to a retail training seminar (and who hasn’t?), you will no doubt have been told that retailing product in your salon can generate 2 to 3 times more profit for the time taken than providing services for your clients. With this in mind, there can be no better time than right now to review, and improve upon, your current retailing activities to ensure that you are going to maximise your sales during the busy year ahead. Retailing does not have to be the cream on your profit cake, if done effectively, it can actually turn out to be the cake itself! By implementing the ideas that follow, you should be able to generate more sales and therefore more profit in your salon.
