Lesson #2: Passion is the Key in a Successful Business Recipe
| |
| “You have to have passion when you’re finding a recipe for a career,” says Fields. “If you love what you are doing, you’ll never work a day in your life.” |

Your Value is Like a Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookie
| |
| Selling is a lot like baking. I love to bake. Every Sunday I make 3 batches of chocolate chip cookies for my family of three growing boys. Friends who stop by know the cookie jar will be full and ask to dip in. No kid or adult is immune and they can never stop at just one.

Herd Mentality
| |
| Booths featuring products and services related to employee engagement, web-based delivery, global performance, and talent management were overflowing with conference attendees as I walked the trade show at a national conference where I was speaking. Just a few years ago the magnets were initiatives like total quality management, six sigma, diversity, work-life-balance, and customer driven. |

A CEOs Thoughts on Collaboration
| |
| I had breakfast with Matt Blumberg – the CEO of Return Path – yesterday. I’ve worked with Matt for at least six years and love the way his brain works. During my frustrating quest for the best chocolate croissant in Boulder (so far all of the ones I’ve found appear to be exactly the same – I’m guessing there is one chocolate croissant distributor in town) we talked some about “collaboration.” |

| This week's tip comes from my friend Chip Conley, author of the new book "Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow" and CEO of Joie de Vivre hotels. Many people have told me and Chip that we were separated at birth in terms of our approach to business and life. |

Why every business should have a strategy for growth and how to do it
| |
| Celia made great cookies, but she wasn’t making great money. Six years of hard work and she’d virtually cornered the cookie market in her home town. Her new range of corporate cookies (cookies for corporate gifts) had enabled her to capitalize on a new market segment and charge a higher price.
But, she was working harder than ever and her dreams of taking long holidays in the sun seemed to be a distant fantasy.

Productivity through Chocolate Reflections
| |
| So there I sat, staring at the candy and trying not to open the first one. (My will power diminishes after eating one.) Of course, I gave in and ate my first one.
I was surprised to see that on the inside of every wrapper are little messages. It is like a chocolate fortune cookie! With every one I opened, I found another productivity thought.
"Get Your Feet Massaged"
Now doesn't that sound wonderful? Chocolate and a massage! But there is a productivity thought here. So many of us work and work and never take time out to recharge. That is what this message is telling us. |

Customers Needs-The One and Only Way to Know For Sure What To Sell
| |
| If it were up to me there would only be two or three flavors of ice cream ever created. If you don't love chocolate chip and strawberry ice cream it is a good thing for you my tastes and desires aren't the holy grail of what sells!
Don't let your preferences and desires determine what you sell. And for your businesses sake, don't assume that your preferences are shared by your customer. Desire and motivation is unique to each of us. Even if we ultimately purchase the same product we often do so for very different reasons and therefore need to be marketed to differently. |

How Do Websites Use Cookies

"We May be Poor but..."
| |
| It started off so innocently which made the contrast that much more painful. We were kidding around as our family often does at night. Ann had offered to make chocolate chip cookies -- favorites of Amber and mine. Then we discovered we were out of chocolate chips.
It was close to 9 pm and I wasn't excited about going out, so Ann suggested we make oatmeal cookies, then we realized we were also out of cranberries. In the midst of all this she said, "This is how poor people live..." or something to that effect.
That's it -- 6 words that felt to me like a 250 pound thug had struck me in my solar plexus. |
